Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

Tonight was tricky but I made it Smile
I think a bottle of wine is about 500 calories so feeling good for not drinking it tonight.

Ruprekt · 04/01/2013 23:17

Day 4 - conquered !!!

Didn't give it a thought. DH said it would be nice to have a glass of red wine but we didnt open a bottle and had peppermint tea instead!!

but with a clear head!

I've been on fizzy water with mint leaves, ginger and lime. It's been ok, chocolate is helping.

Pollykitten · 05/01/2013 00:00

Hi all, I'm also on the wagonista and am finding that doing lots of juicing with my juicer (apple and ginger mostly) is helping me to feel virtuous. I've planned the two occasions in Jan when I will have a glass of wine and am hoping that this will see me through. Juicing is definitely making a difference tho....

rubberglove · 05/01/2013 08:36

Lovely clear head this morning Smile

tuffinmop · 05/01/2013 08:52

Mornin Ladies
Lovely clear head today feeling goooooood Grin
spud don't be hard on yourself, today is a new day, baby steps and all that. I've sworn to stop for x amount of time, loads hundreds of times and not got past day one!

There is a lot in the news about alcohol at the moment, its really making me think. 50% rise in hospital admissions related to drink in the last 10 years or something like that? I've probably got that figure wrong but its a rise anyway.

Our society is so accepting of drink as normal, when infact when you step away and see it from a distance, its soooo bad for you.

Its such a shame a good red wine with a hunk of cheese or a cold crisp pinot in the sun shine is about as close to heavan as you can get! (salivates longingly)

Onwards and upwards all x x

Lottapianos · 05/01/2013 10:11

Morning all. Don't worry if you've slipped up, today is a new day!
I've just had a sleep marathon and feel epic! Lovely clear head and feeling really positive. Have a good day everyone!

rhondajean · 05/01/2013 10:15

All going fine here. We do this quite regularly though - my gym reopened yesterday too so I'll support it with daily gym visits.

DHs birthday is feb 7 th so I'll probably run straight through till then.

Godlessdomestic · 05/01/2013 10:16

Good morning, I went out for curry last night with a group of friends.. All drinking and I resisted. The upside was that our share of the bill was £20 cheaper than the other couples - the downside is that DH is still in bed and I'm up with the small person. But whoooot... I survived.

Well done everyone who resisted and don't beat yourself up if you didn't.

rubberglove · 05/01/2013 11:05

Tonight might be hard, feel a bit 'justified' to have a drink. But if I can resist tonight should make it to next weekend as I don't drink during the week in term time anyway.

Taking kids swimming later and feel up for it!

Doshusallie · 05/01/2013 11:19

Morning all. I have a cold. I am never ill. Could this be withdrawal??

Rhondajean I share your husband's birthday so I might hang on till then too.

yeah i am trying to do it as well

for both money and health reasons

i must admit its been a revelation to wake up on a saturday not hungover Blush

FlyingFig · 05/01/2013 12:47

Joining you all on the roll call! I've not had a drink since the 30th of December. I'm a binge drinker usually, in that I can go a few days without any at all but can easily sink a bottle or two say 3 nights a week (more over Christmas Blush) If not drinking wine, then I can easily plough my way through lager or cider

Nearly caved last night, but drank 2 glasses of elderflower cordial with sparkling water and ice, which took the edge of the cravings. I seem to get my booze horns on at about 7pm and it takes until at least 9pm for them to stop twitching, by which point I'm glad I didn't cave in.

I quite clearly think too much about alcohol, even when I'm not drinking it Blush

FlyingFig · 05/01/2013 12:49

Oh and last night I slept really well, before this I've had restless legs and taken an age to get off to sleep, so it was a bonus to sleep so well and wake up without the usual Saturday morning thumping head...

Day 4 - entering danger zone. Not eaten tea yet as dcs still around, and it's Saturday night, and I would have usually drunk at least a glass by now.....am finding myself in the kitchen to get SOMETHING all the time, which means I am snacking loads more than usual. Oh well, fat but sober..... Hmm

whats4teamum · 05/01/2013 18:03

Can I join in. Started last Thursday on wagon. Why do I have a fuggy headache? Will it clear and can have this new found energy people speak of. Saturday night is a tricky one. Any suggestions for low calorie sub for alcohol. I don't mind tonic water but might get a bit bored with it. Don't want to drink tea all evening.

spudmasher · 05/01/2013 18:29

Furdycone Glad I'm not the only one! But back on the wagon today and feeling OK so far. Just had dinner and now thinking about some juice with sparkling water.
From Aldi today I got 6 little bottles of fizzy water for 99p to go with nice cordial with lots of ice and lemon. You can also get 4 big bottles for 99p but I like it REALLY fizzy and day two of a bottle of fizzy water is just not as good.
Back at work on Monday so should be easier then.......
How is everyone else doing on this Saturday night....the first one and TV is RUBBISH.

rubberglove · 05/01/2013 18:37

My favourite thing usually on a Sat eve, is supping a large glass of red when my youngest has gone to bed, whilst reading a good book and my dh cooks something nice.

But I did feel better today and enjoyed taking the kids swimming feeling fresh. I don't expect to lose weight, I am eating more!

It is more about feeling fresher, breaking habits and giving my body a break.

tuffinmop · 05/01/2013 18:46

Feeling the urge tonight I have to say, I love a large glass of red whilst cooking the tea, ipod on and would have had atleast one by now. I will resist but crickey I am feeling it tonight.....

Sleepingbunnies · 05/01/2013 19:29

Really really need a vodka :(

glitch · 05/01/2013 19:48

Hmmmm, evenings are a bit long without wine Smile

Wincher · 05/01/2013 20:03

I have also just found out I'm pregnant so dry January is a great excuse here too! Am staying with friends for the weekend and so far have had to turn down mulled wine and prosecco. On the ribena now.

determinedma · 05/01/2013 20:07

Having a no alcohol beer tonight but feel like I'm cheating somehow. I'm not, am I?
