Mirena coil

Lizzer · 07/01/2002 12:41

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

nwgreenmum , I'm amazed that you haven't had this investigated earlier, presumably it is possible it came out in labour ?

nwgreenmum · 15/01/2007 14:03

Lizs, They all seemed to be really relaxed about the fact it was in there with DD, and said it wouldn't cause any problems. I have been asking for a scan or something since she was born, Dr finally requested one at my 6 week check and the appointment has only now come through (waiting lists and all that). DD is now 20 weeks old.
It is entirely possible that it came out at some stage I guess, though the midwives did a good chech of placenta etc. cos I was the Mirena Mum Still no AF too.

Hi
Reading about mirena coils on this page is very scaryI am due to have one fitted next week!!! Now rather worried. Has anyone had one fitted after having microwave ablation(removal of lining of the womb). My gyni thinks will stop lining of womb regrowingbut I feel fine at mono bleeding since November-there seem to be so many side effects!!! Would be great to hear from anyone who has onegood or badcoil tht is!!! Thanks Wunda

sja307 · 18/01/2007 22:00

Hi, ive had my Mirena since November 2006 I know its not that long, but my life has been transformed, from heavy horendous periods to none at all, also I've lost 16lbs and feel fab. Just thought i'd add some positive comments on my experience

moomoocow · 21/01/2007 12:06

Hiya - this is my first post due to desperation. I have no kiddies but had irregular and heavy periods after a miscarry in 1996. Doctor suggested Merina last month and I had it fitted 2 weeks ago. I have never experienced pain like that in my life, and it took 20 mins to get it in. I firmly believe I suffered internal bruising, such was the continued pain for 5 days afterwards - I could not stand upright or go to the toilet and had 3 days from work (which sucks because our bonus is linked to attendance) Back at work, colleagues have shared horror stories but no-one mentioned crippiling jabbing pains in my left side which make me feel like I'm passing out - doctor prescribed Mefenamic Acid which when taken makes the pain WORSE! If i sit in the car for more than two mins I start crying due to how uncomfortable and painful it feels - cannot go to toilet (very constipated) - if I eat wheat or dairy the pain worsens. My belly is so bloated i cannot fit into my jeans (sat here in holiday shorts) and look pregnant. I previously had acne (small spots) but now have six MASSIVE whiteheads all round my face and a rash on my upper body. All this after 2 weeks.............
Spoke to the nurse at the GP's office who said "it's normal - its bedding in" I have read a lot of your posts and sit here crying. Should I just go into the bedroom and try to get it out, should I make an appointment and get it out, should I listen to what the GP/nurse say and make a decision or should I just leave it to bed in? The only plus is no bleeding whatsoever - which the nurse says indicates that everything is "OK!"

Madoldcatlady · 21/01/2007 13:39

Oh Moomoo you poor thing.

Things are obviously far from normal.

Go back to see your GP and get it taken out.

I know what you mean about the pain to have it fitted. I almost passed out with mine and that was after havinbg had 3 babies!

I pulled my own out in the end because the GP refused to accept that all my horrendous health problems could be connected to it.

Hey presto, it came out and I got better!

They lie about the mirena. It wrecks womens lives. GET IT OUT!!!!

Keep us informed. Good luck.x

Madoldcatlady · 21/01/2007 13:41

PS. I was 2ndtime in a former life, just so you know I know what I'm talking about!

Welcome to Mumsnet too.

veryaggitated · 22/01/2007 14:23

Hello maybe someone can shed some light on my situation. Had the mirena fitted beginning sept seemed all fine and dandy to start with however in the last month my face and everywhere has broken out in acne, my moods are unbearable, i look ill all the time and i have gained a stone(since sept), i get metallic taste in mouth alot and have been becoming more and more depressed. Saying all this i am being treated for post natal depression which was going well until recently and have had my meds upped last week because of low mood. Could this be the coil causing these problems?? Can i take it out myself can't get appointment foe 2 weeks??

Wunda · 22/01/2007 20:49

Hi
All this sounds so worrying. I am having mine fitted on Wednesday at GP surgery. Apparently I have to have it after microwave ablation if I want to continue HRT--am now thinking better without HRT!!!
I feel very sorry for you--reckon go back to docs pdq!
Please get it removed if so painfulwhy do some people think it wonderfulis it the person who inserts it I wonder.
Take Care

expatinscotland · 22/01/2007 20:54

Progesten does HORRIBLE things to my skin.

Even normal levels of progesterone in my body cause horrible acne two weeks out of the month for me.

It produces androgen-like effects in the body.

Progesten-based contraception make me break out in painful cystic acne such that I'd bleed through my clothes and wake w/blood all over my sheet, killed my sex drive entirely, made my PND so awful I had to get signed off work and get an emergency appointment w/my psychiatrist (who told me to stop taking that shit immediately) and made me bleed full on period every other week.

I'd rather be pregnant than EVER take that stuff again.

THEY LIE ABOUT THE MIRENA AND ALL FORMS OF HORMONAL CONTRACEPTION!

Sorry, but they do.

amandaf · 26/01/2007 16:47

i had an old coil removed last july after 3 years of spotting. have 2 kids, teenagers, and doc recommended mirena coil. since july ive definitely got no sex drive, vaginal dryness and although my periods are now monthly they go on for days and days, but can't insert a tampon at all now.....anybody got a clue if it's to do with mirena???

Lozza123 · 29/01/2007 01:25

Hi. Just want to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing i have been with their mirena. I am thinking about having it taken out.

I have had the mirena for 3 months now and the first month or two went very smoothly. Had spotting here and there and periods were roughly 14 days long but weren't too bad. However I have just finished a month long period that was beginning to do my head in, and am now spotting but just happy it's not how it was. The past week I have also had breat tenderness, a headache everyday and this feeling that I am thirsty all the time and dry in the mouth, so i drink constantly but none of it is coming out. I must be retaining it because I put the fluid in and none comes out plus my weight is going up. I just feel yuck. Think the fluid is making me feel tired too because the days i know i am retaining a lot of fluid I feel exhausted. Just like a weak feeling throughout my body. Has anyone else experienced this? if so did it pass after a month or 2? I have been working really hard to lose the 40kgs i put on whilst being pregnant and am getting very tired of giving it my all and having these fluid jumps whenever my body feels like it. These symptoms only started after having the mirena so i am positive the two are related. Also i have a gross taste in my mouth all the time.

any advice would be greatly appreciated and if you have had any of the same experiences please let me know. thank you

wazz · 29/01/2007 17:03

HI,

CAN ANY PLEASE TELL ME IF THERE SKIN ON FACE LOOKED AS THO IT HAS AGED??
I HAD MY COIL FITTED LAST JULY WHICH WAS A PAINFULL EXPERIENCE. I HAD LOTS OF BLEEDING ALONG WITH TERRIBLE PAINS IN MY LEFT GROIN FOR AROUND 8 WEEKS, MY PERIODS HAVE GOT WORSE VERY FRESH BLOOD UNLIKE PERIOD BLOOD AND MY MOOD SWINGS ARE HORRID. THE WORST THING IS MY SKIN AROUND MY CHIN AND MOUTH LOOK 10 YEARS OLDER. I AM HAVING IT REMOVED THIS THURSDAY AND HOPE MY FACE GETS BETTER OR ELSE I WILL HAVE TO SAVE FOR A FACE LIFT I AM ONLY 35...HELP..

Ronniebaby · 29/01/2007 22:34

amandaf - I lost my sex drive completely

Lozza123 - I had lots of headache's. not everyday and a dry in the mouth, I felt exhausted more than I ever did. Also I had a nasty taste in my mouth most of the time.

I'd had mine for 18 months tho.

Wazz - sorry I cant help you on this one.

I had mine removed, my mood swings have gone and all my other symptoms have gone, best thing I ever did was have it removed.

ellenrose · 30/01/2007 13:30

Had mine removed a couple of weeks ago and best thing I could have done.

Skin already much better, my moods are back to normal, and I even fancy having sex now which is a massive improvement in our house

I really was feeling absolutely dreadful and my weight gain has been ridiculous. I am not blaming the coil for everything as I think you need to be cautious but it certainly didn't help.

Flumpybumpy · 30/01/2007 13:33

Can anyone else 'feel' their Mirena?? I had mine fitted 8wks ago and when I have a period it's like I can feel it pressing into me. I might being going nuts .

Other than that I have had no problems so far....

FB x

amandaf · 30/01/2007 17:12

ronnie baby - thanks for your reply.
flumpybumpy - i can't do sit ups at all now as i can feel the coil, also find it painful to bend down and tie laces so have to wear slip-ons..... worrying!!!

weblette · 01/02/2007 13:45

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here...

I've just had to have mine removed after nearly 3 years as it had slipped - I could feel it when sitting down and the strings had got longer.

You shouldn't be able to feel it at all so please get it checked if you do.

LostMe · 01/02/2007 21:31

I'm sitting here in tears as feeling really weepy. Had Mirena fitted approx 6 mths ago. Periods have been dreadful but now appear to be settling down - but mood swings seem to be getting worse! I really am an awful mummy - in newstime at school my 5yr daughter apparently commented that mummy was cross at the weekend (really crying now). Am so deperate for this to work as DH doesn't want snip and can't take the pill as have thick blood. Need to have smear tomorrow as last one was not good and am thinking about asking for this to be removed. DD has started acting up at school and am convinced it's my fault for being such a cr@p mum. I feel totally useless.

Chocol8 · 02/02/2007 07:51

Poor you Lostme - i would speak to them about it at your appt, but the chances are they will try and talk you round to keeping it in (i know they do this as i had an appt yesterday and the gynae told me).

If you are not happy with it - and it sounds awful - then get it removed. Were you feeling the same prior to having it fitted?

You are not an crap Mum LostMe- you know it's the Mirena that's making you feel this way (at least you have this to blame, i am a bitch from hell for 2 weeks out of 4 and i don't have one!). Thinking of you, so sorry you're feeling this way. (((((((hugs)))))))

LostMe · 02/02/2007 10:03

Thanks Chocol8. I don't think I was this bad before - but it's weird, its sort of crept up on me. It really does feel that it's getting just a tiniest bit worse every passing day. But the changes are so small it's not until you feel totally wrecked that you realise something has changed hugely over the past six months. I am hoping it IS the coil to blame, because if it's not it means I am foul, grumpy mum, pretty much all the time. but thanks for the hugs - I needed them . Oh and typically, as smear is today, have started heavy spotting mid cycle - hurrah!

LostMe · 02/02/2007 19:49

For anyone that's interested, my GP reckons approx 10% of women won't get on with the Mirena! Saw her today and am having it removed next week. (after spending best part of ten minutes blubbing in her office) Feel better already - I am NOT mad!

Chocol8 · 02/02/2007 22:50

No, you are not mad and it sounds like the only decision you could have made from what you've described LostMe. I'm glad you're feeling better that you've made an appt.

Regarding figures, my first gynae (pig) told me that 80% of women get on with Mirena but i said that from what i'd read on MN, it seemed to be a 50/50 split.

When i told my new gynae this, he said that i was right at 50/50 and that he had written a paper for the BMJ saying that hysterectomys had gone down from 80-30% since the Mirena had been introduced.

I have agreed to have one fitted when i have my polyp removed in a few weeks but that they will remove the Mirena if the bleeding/depression/dry skin/greasy hair/boob tenderness/spots/weight gain etc etc etc get any worse.

That doesn't mean it's written in stone though especially if i read anymore negative comments on here until then!!!

LostMe · 03/02/2007 19:35

Best of luck to you - it might suit you fine. I actually feel human today, even though Mirena is still in. I think it has helped enormously having Dr. acknowledge and agree with me! Almost makes me wonder if I should persevere a bit longer (but I don't think I will!)

nardeen2 · 05/02/2007 23:48
