ds2 (2.6) had chocolate ice cream for pudding this evening, had it all over his face when he finished. He started rubbing his eye .we washed his face and i saw that his eye was quite puffy. he's been bathed now and it's at least 2 hours since he had it yet his eye is still swollen. He can't open it fully but it's not closed up.
really worried-what should i do?

It's odd for chocolate ice cream to do something like that. It good be just a coincidence. Does the eye look red? Is it painful to the touch? Is there any discharge?

alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:21

no ! its a bit red athe side but onlt slightly and it was completely normal beforehand.he seems quite happy

Perhaps it is just from the rubbing. A cool cloth would be good, but at that age he probably won't let you do it. I don't know what the UK version of tylenol is, but perhaps something like that and keep watching it. Of course, you are both probably off to bed in a bit...

jabberwocky · 03/04/2006 21:25

Oh, and it's not continuing to swell right?

katyrocks · 03/04/2006 21:26

sugar in the eye can do this, was the ice-cream grainy? he may just have rubbed some into it, which would irritate it enough to cause it to swell up

alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:27

no i don't think so. how weird is this? he's never had anything like this before. and has had ice cream plenty of times!

OP posts:
alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:27

it was maltesers ice cream so i guess it was bitty

Chapsmum · 03/04/2006 21:29

he must be seen by a dr ASAP, if they eye could be infected, in which case he will need antibiotics asap. would be weird for it to be an allergic reaction as it would be in both eyes. I would probably take him to kids a and e if you can

katyrocks · 03/04/2006 21:29

maybe he had got something in it earlier and the ice-cream took his mind off it for a while

alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:30

how can it be an infection in the space it takes to eat an ice cream?

OP posts:
alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:31

no! honestly it was completely normal! he was sittiing at the table opposite me and there was nothing wrong with it.

OP posts:
katyrocks · 03/04/2006 21:31

i would guess its probably sugar - it'll go down in time and not cause any harm. its very irritating but not damaging

Chapsmum · 03/04/2006 21:31

seriously, if he's distresed give him some nurofen but he really needs to be seen if his eye is swollen shut. a wee ones eyes are so delicate they should not be left like that.

Chapsmum · 03/04/2006 21:33

infections can happen that quickely as can localised reaction.
I would certainly not turn you away from a and e.

Seriously, check with NHS 24 but this needs to be seen ASAP

alexsmum · 03/04/2006 21:34

cheers everyone. i'm going to give it some time this evening.it's not getting any worse and he's not bothered at all.if it's still like this in an hour i will phone the g.p co-op.
