Hair going really is quite a moment. Feels better once you get past that though, I promise.

Paddy, no way are you a fraud. Blimey, apart from anything else you've lost your mum to this bastard disease. Stick with us and ask anything you want. Waiting's horrid. Sad

Who was asking about cold cap? Think it was Snoopy. I had some success, but like Lime it made me dizzy. Am guessing you want honestly, so have to admit I threw up each time - sort of Pavlovian reaction I think, but then after that was genuinely okay and I stuck it through all 6 chemos. I started with a huge head of thick hair, which thinned a lot, and also huge bald patch. Still in a way was good, as I had fringe/ hair at back, so with a bit of artful scarfing, could not scream 'cancer' at everyone.

  • if you do end up having mastectomy, it's really not so bad. I've had two now - with immediate reconstruction each time. If it happens, I reckon way through is to try and think about it as a good thing if you can, as it means there's very little breast tissue left for recurrence. Ask anything you want about it all, I have implants, which is simplest way of reconstruction.

Can't possibly post to all, though am noting MAS, we have same taste in men, as would definitely cross the road for Christopher Ecclestone. Saw him perform something last year though, and he's disappointingly titchy..

Amber, am in awe at Yurt building. Smile

BF brought round muffins and other nice snacks this morning to go with the huge box of chocs another friend brought into the hospital. Dh has just taken ds out for the afternoon, so me and my new breast will prop ourselves up on sofa cushions. No pics yet, Topsy (trust you to ask Grin). Am still covered in bandages, though they do feel pretty symmetrical, so yay for that.

Gin, I'll have some Comte please and a pain au chocolate to go with the pot of coffee just made. Good choice to go to France. Hope you and DH can have a few treats after the week you've had.

Ned, those injections are a bit butch - had quite forgotten 'til you posted. Just tick off the days and rest up. Strangely I found walking helped. Did a lot of street pounding on Tax. xx

Ramble, ramble, though Grin at 'Craft'. Waving to all - thanks for all your lovely messages. What would I do without you all. Smile

jchocchip · 05/05/2012 14:58

Yay for your symmetrical boobies smee, just remember to stay on that sofa so we don't have to come round with the duct tape.

Hugs to gracie xx Enjoy your afternoon at the shops and with your ds kk.

The knight in shinning armour plumber came on his charger motorbike to fix the shower so we have lovely hot water again :)

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/05/2012 15:55

hooray for plumber jane !!
Hope smee is resting (and eating chocs) !

Gracie I ended up collecting all my hair up in a carrier bag !
It got to the stage when I had had enough and just clippered the rest of it off .
I had a wig but never wore it as I found it too hot .
I wore scarfes or Buffs , or nothing at all !

DD is prepping dinner in the kitchen .
So far she has chopped peppers and onions .
We are about to move onto chicken (making chicken wraps with rice and potato salad)
She has been desperate to cook something all by herself , so I thought why not ?

I just look away when she uses the sharp knives ... Grin

amberlight · 05/05/2012 16:41

Gracie, have a hug. Losing hair isn't a small thing. So much of female life is taught to us as 'you must have luscious shiny sleek perfectly cut hair to show off your femininity' and then we end up all bald/patchy. Arrgh.
But I wouldn't now be without Matilda and Ermintrude, my glam wigs. V natural and people think I've had a new hairstyle. My own hair is regrowing underneath, but looks like I'm channelling the Jackson 5, so it's staying under Matilda until it straightens out again Hmm

I'm retreating from the retreat for a bit - blimey, running these conferences is full-on!

Brew all round for everyone including those with symmetrical Biscuit Grin

Gigondas · 05/05/2012 17:18

Gracie I also am not relishing losing my hair but kk thought about speeding up my shower time had occurred to me. I may get it chopped before hand so feels less like I am out of control.

Some electioneering here but tbh this is Sarko land so not a lot of debate Grin. I did have to wait ages in the chocolate shop as its wedding and confirmation season which seems to involve buying kilos of sugared almonds.

Iamseeingstars · 05/05/2012 17:38

Hi everyone. Thought I would pop in. Cant believe we are on thread 23. I joined about thread 12 or 13. hugs to you all, especially for those having tests and operations.

So many new people since my last posting. It is frightening how many people are being diagnosed with cancer.

Recovery is slow. I am suffering with muscle wastage because of drugs and lack of exercise when in hospital and I really regret not doing a bit more when I was in there. I never realised what devistation it could do to my body.

I also have serious stomach and bowel problems which is adding to the torment. No one ever mentioned about problems I may encounter after treatment. I know they said recovery is one to two years but I didn't really believe it.

Other than the physical problems I am ok. Still getting bouts of depression mainly because of pain and pressure from family who think I should be walking 24/7 and that the pain is my imagination and if I made more of an effort then I would get better overnight.

It has now been a year since my diagnosis. Time flies!

Iamseeingstars · 05/05/2012 17:44

Gracie. Just reading your post reminded me of when my hair fell out. I couldn't believe how quickly it happened once the process started.

You do get used to it, but you will need hats or scarves because you do feel the cold more.

I have a wig but rarely wear it. At the time of purchase it suited me, but with a swollen steroid moon face I feel really self conscious in it and tend to wear a silly gimmick hat.

I have had lots of people saying well done for shaving my hair for charity!! Little do they know.

I am pleased to say my hair is finally starting to grow and it isn't all grey.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/05/2012 18:19

hooray for new hair growth stars and lovely to see you - so sorry that recovery is slow and tht you have stomach & bowel probs.
gig what did you buy ? I think most people tend to chop their hair before it falls- my SIL did and I think it makes you feel much more in control and hopefully is less distressing than finding clumps in the shower or on your pillow.

Hi Mas, How are you. It's great see to see you keeping this thread going

snoopygirl · 05/05/2012 19:05

gracie sorry about your hair... this is my concern - as you said I don't want people to look at me in pity as I'll just look like a cancer victim. Also woried that a child might say to my DS that your Mum looks weird or something and upset him.

amber can you still wear the wig ok when your hair is growing back?

smee take it easy and hope you heal quickly.

One Like you say at least you still have a fair amount and can cover with scarf/hat.

Thanks for the advice ladies and sorry if haven't replied to all. I really appreciate it.

Off to watch tv with take away and big fat vino! Smile

graciesmall09 · 05/05/2012 19:10

Thank you all for your kind words. I took the bull by the horns and phoned my lovely hairdresser who stayed after work and cut my hair v. short. He calls it a pixie cut which probably looks very cute on some young 20 something but not so hot above a round fat face, I just couldn't cope with my shoulder length hair covering the shower and falling out on my shoulder. Topsy oh wise one you did warn me this week it would go quickly, I don't think I really believed it would be so quick. So at the moment I don't quite look like a cancer sufferer, more a butch, fat bird Smile. Wig and scarves/hat are ready and waiting.

Iamseeingstars I'm relatively new so haven't 'met' you before but that is such a shame you are still suffering problems. Hopefully these aren't going to be long term.

jchoc glad Sir Galahad turned up and you can be clean once more.

smee Glad everything symmetrical Grin

Topsy hope your dinner courtesy of DD is good.

DH has decided he is doing a barbecue. The children have all gone to a neighbours for an FA Cup final party but as 2 out of 3 in our house are Liverpool fans it is a sad house.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/05/2012 19:12

sounds good snoopy -the vino and takeaway !
stars -thanks- am fine- busy with bits of work. x

is it warm where you are gracie ? bloody freezing here.
topsy hope dinner is yummy !

OP posts:
graciesmall09 · 05/05/2012 20:35

mas not warm at all blooming freezing but I left him to it and I stayed inside. Lets just say few beers while watching football = very slightly burnt food Grin. Think the dog had most of it.

smee · 05/05/2012 21:05

Freezing here too. Have just ordered us Thai take-out, so am looking forward to sofa with DH. Might throw caution to the wind and have some Wine too.

Waving to Stars. I have ongoing stomach and bowel problems too. With me, I think it's Tax that's done it. Not so serious with me, more annoying. It comes and goes, so at the moment am hoping it's not long term. Bit annoying though to say the least.

Gracie, good on you for taking control of the hair. I'd bet you look fab with a short cut.

Topsy, is DD now chief chef, or are you worried about food poisoning..? Grin

graciesmall09 · 05/05/2012 21:19

smee Thai sounds lovely wish we had ordered in at least it wouldn't have been cremated.

topsy hope you haven't had to rush to A&E with DD severed finger after all that chopping.

topsyturner · 05/05/2012 21:26

Evening All

DDs dinner was lovely !
She made chicken and pepper fajitas , rice , and potato salad .
She chopped everything herself .
She cooked everything herself .
But don't worry , she's not freakishly gifted as she neglected to clean even one single item !
Grin

DH has decided that she can cook every Saturday from now on ...

Gigondas · 05/05/2012 21:26

Don't bother trying to get sense out to topsy- it's dale night.

Mini gig shouting at the French version of the voice. It's a few weeks ahead of ours so If it is a standard format , the acts seem to be doing duets etc with their coaches.

Gigondas · 05/05/2012 21:27

Ah cross posts - dd sounds talented Wink

graciesmall09 · 05/05/2012 21:32

Glad the dinner went well Topsy. It may be fun cooking but I concur the clearing up stinks, so clever DD leaving clearing up to mum Grin

gigs is it warm in France. Its blooming freezing here. I have a blanket wrapped around me.

Gigondas · 05/05/2012 21:37

It's not warm but not blanket weather.

I am not sure where I would start with orange men here ...Grin
