I have had,for the 1st time in my 48yo life,a bout of tonsilitis. Started Saturday as an earache, and one sided sore throat. Quickly escalated by Monday the pain was unbearable...taking 3 Nurofen and not even touching it. GP said it looked "viral" and to carry on with painkillers'.

Last 2 mornings,I am not ashamed to say I have cried with the pain. Other symptoms:
Only on one side
Pain in jaw and ear
Feels like razor blades when swallow.
cannot open mouth properly
lots of spittle (sorry tmi)
Voice is weird.

Went and saw different GP this morning...and she wasn't happy. Said she is worried re Quincy (Quinsy?). She gave me Penicillin 500mg 4x day...Diclonfenac 50mg 3 x day...and a throat spray. She said if pain gets any worse to go A&E as may need draining Shock. I am sitting here in tears again, the pain is so bad.

Shall I wait for ABs' to kick in? Or shall I go and let them at me with a needle

Sorry it's long...

If the Dr has told you to go to A and E if it gets any worse then I would. If its so bad you are crying then you need something else to help.

OnlyWantsOneTwoAndThree · 19/04/2012 20:30

I would go.

Get well soon Smile

Pascha · 19/04/2012 20:31

I had a quinsy when I was 21. It was nasty. It burst before I needed the hospital but it was very very close. Please go if its that bad.

CMOTDibbler · 19/04/2012 20:31

I'd go to A&E

Neverever · 19/04/2012 20:32

Go to a & e I believe it's immediated relief once it's drained, good luck.

piratecat · 19/04/2012 20:32

you poor love, i don't know what to suggest. obviously the anti b's need about 48 to start making any difference. You left it too long to go back, but thats only because you were told viral, and nor you or the first gp knew it would get to this.

will google quinsy

PUMBA · 19/04/2012 20:32

If it is Quinsey draining the abscess will make it feel much better, it isn't as bad as it sounds.... If left you will only get worse and need iv anti biotics !!!

Pascha · 19/04/2012 20:32

Oh and if it is a quinsy the sheer relief when it bursts is amazing. I didn't realise just how much pain and pressure it was causing til it was gone.

piratecat · 19/04/2012 20:34

jeeez it's an abscess !! go to a+E xxx

crazynanna · 19/04/2012 20:37

WheresTheYoghurt · 19/04/2012 20:40

Tonsilitis is dreadful - if she has said go, then go. I got told off for not doing so...

CaptainVonTrapp · 19/04/2012 20:43

Go, you will feel better straight away.

youarekidding · 19/04/2012 20:46

Please let us know how you get on.

PorkyandBess · 19/04/2012 20:48

I think quinsy made me feel the most unwell I have ever felt, and I'm 'ard.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

hippoCritt · 19/04/2012 20:49

We will even wait in the waiting room with you if required, hope you soon feel better

QOD · 19/04/2012 20:51

Oh bless ou, good luck!

ethelb · 19/04/2012 20:51

I have a friend who is an ent and says he loves the quinsys as the relife to the patient is immediate when they drain it and is the most satisfying thing for a Dr to do! Plus they boast about how much they drained off to other Drs... so I am sure the Dr's in A+E would be thrilled if you gave them a chance to do this. You shoudl go, no good reason not to tbh.

margoandjerry · 19/04/2012 20:52

sounds like a quinsy to me. DSIS had one and had all the ssame symptoms. We are tonsillitis veterans in my family and this was something else. Can be nasty so get it drained.

maddiemostmerry · 19/04/2012 20:53

I've had to stay in hospital and have IV antibiotics with a Quinsy.
The quicker you get treatment the sooner you will feel better.

Poor you, they are terrible, I had my tonsils out in the end as I developed a Quinsy every few months and the onset got faster.

Hope A&E sort you out.

crazynanna · 19/04/2012 20:55
