Should I go to A&E? Really don't want to.

I have had,for the 1st time in my 48yo life,a bout of tonsilitis. Started Saturday as an earache, and one sided sore throat. Quickly escalated by Monday the pain was unbearable...taking 3 Nurofen and not even touching it. GP said it looked "viral" and to carry on with painkillers'.

Last 2 mornings,I am not ashamed to say I have cried with the pain. Other symptoms:
Only on one side
Pain in jaw and ear
Feels like razor blades when swallow.
cannot open mouth properly
lots of spittle (sorry tmi)
Voice is weird.

Went and saw different GP this morning...and she wasn't happy. Said she is worried re Quincy (Quinsy?). She gave me Penicillin 500mg 4x day...Diclonfenac 50mg 3 x day...and a throat spray. She said if pain gets any worse to go A&E as may need draining Shock. I am sitting here in tears again, the pain is so bad.

Shall I wait for ABs' to kick in? Or shall I go and let them at me with a needle

Sorry it's long...

Good luck, just think, in a couple of hours time you'll be comfortable and you'll hopefully get a good nights sleep after its all over.

Morning crazy. Hope you are alright. x

crazynanna · 20/04/2012 13:32

Hello Smile

Well it was an abscess...aapparantly a rather impressive one by all accounts',and I was commended by the A&E doctor on my pain threshold...little does he know I had been a blubbering baby!!!

They kept me in overnight on a AB drip...and said they would give it a "pop" in the morning Shock
Gods' on my side...it burst during the night

Glad you went and that you are now back home. Hope you feel better soon

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 20/04/2012 13:36

Glad you are feeling better. I've been in hospital before with tonsillitis and it was very unpleasant.

hippoCritt · 20/04/2012 13:37

So pleased it sounds like you are on a road to recovery, look after yourself

Neverever · 20/04/2012 13:37

Thank you I feel a million times' better! I really do.

You do feel a bit of a fraud don't you? Taking up a cubicle in Emergency with nowt but a gammy throat.
Being the nosey interested and concerned person that I am..and the fact my cubicle was right next to Resus,I did witness the dramatic events of a lady coming in having given birth to a 22 weeker in the ambulance Shock

Que lots of running around and Incubator being rushed in...I saw mum being wheeled to the ward about an hour later, and then 20 mins later saw the incubator with baby being wheeled away Smile By all accounts at that point, baby was breathing!

Glad you're feeling better! Bog-standard tonsillitis is the pits (I get it every winter) but quinsy sounds so much worse!

My friend told me that she treats her tonsillitis by rubbing a paste of pure Scotch Bonnet chilli on it. Apparently the pain is excruciating for half an hour but then the tonsillitis disappears. I don't think she's pulling my leg - has anyone else heard about this/tried it?

piratecat · 20/04/2012 14:18

oh so glad you are ok. sounds awful.

hope baby 22 will be ok too.

youarekidding · 20/04/2012 14:21

Glad your OK, sounds horrific.

Also sending positive vibes to where ever the 22 weeker is. My cousin was a 23 weeker, breathed unaided and is absolutey fine now - 18 months and just walking. Smile

tunaday · 20/04/2012 18:26

Blimey you poor thing. So glad you are over the worst. It sounds hideous.
Look after yourself. Hope tiny baby will be OK too. It's a very humbling experience being in A&E.

crazynanna · 20/04/2012 18:50

Thank you oh lovely ones' Smile

I am feeling better by the second.
I did say to the ENT guy "Can you give me the biggest kick ass painkillers' known to man" to which he replied "Morphine is not allowed on an outpatient basis" Grin

Crikey crazynanna you are well 'ard! You survived it bursting too which sounds absolutely horrid!

Good vibes to the wee bairn

VivaLeBeaver · 20/04/2012 23:07

Did it taste awful when it burst? Could you hear it pop? Was there green pus? We need explicit details. Glad you're better!
