anyones kid wear en eye patch?

not a pirate one!

ds3 has mild ptosis and will ahev surgety eventually. he has gone today and they did an eye test and said that his bad eye is not developing as fast as his good one ( altho si stil pretty good and is not deteriorating)

anyway to try and make him use t he bad one he has to wear patches.

UI feel realy sad abotu this for no real reason but feelt hat in the grandcale fo things it coudl eb a lot worse
it sfor 6 weeks at first 4 hours aday

am going to get " the borhters" to ge on board and we are watching spongebont h e movie tonight to have a close look at pirates.

dd1 had to wear one to correct a squint. It improved it a lot but didn't correct it entirely as unfortunately we didn't discover she had one until it was almost too late to do anything about it

How old is ds3 - 3 I think?

one of my DS's had one. Didnt bother him too much didnt make a fuss. Head at school was an arse about it though!!! Had a bit of a run in with him!!
how old is DS?

J wears one. We made our own stickers for it by downloading images that he wanted.
Has he got to have the sticking plaster ones or cloth?

We had a year of patching when dd1 was in Y1. It is a bit horrid, but you get used to it. Trick is to make it absolutely clear that they have to wear it, no negotiation. Praise and rewards, yes, but no choice about actually wearing the thing.

You can have probs with adults and other kids asking stupid questions. "Oh, poor little x, has he hurt his eye" type thing. This gets v. annoying quite quicky, as eyepatching is a complicated thing to explain.

Pirates is a good one, esp for boys.

Anything so visible (glasses, patches) is going to be sad-making for parents, as they look so vulnerable, also something about acknowledging that your beloved littlie is not perfect. But it passes. And patching does work.

dd's patches came with little cartoon transfers, so she used to choose one and rub it on before we put the patch on. She then did activities like drawing and colouring and wore it in school when she started school.

She did find it hard at first because once her good eye was patched she was almost blind so she needed a lot of reassurance as she found it a bit unnerving.

If you think he is going to find it hard to keep the patch on I would use a reward chart to encourage him. Making it a "pirate" game is a good idea too.

Ours came with stickers to put on them, but I felt it made them more obvious.
If youre not hung up about it, they wont be.

My DS wore an eyepatch when he was in reception. He had to wear it for 2 hours every morning for about 4 months. He was fine with it although some days, esp when he was tired he was a bit fed up. It worked a treat though. Pirate idea good.

Deffo agree with frogs about making it clear it is not a choice - like wearing shoes when you go outside - it just has to be done.

DS1 had to wear a patch for a couple of months when he was about 4 or 5.

It was okay. He didn't do too badly. They were pretty good at school about him wearing it. It was important (iirc) that he wore it when doing any close work, watching films etc. That way his bad eye had to work.

It will be fine coddy. I have to confess that I thought DS1 looked rather cute with his pirate thing going on. lol

he is almost three, in fact when we were makign the appointment to go back they said "2 of march?
and i said "hmm now that date rings a bell for some reason"

for gods sake its his birthday!

If he wears glasses there are soft eye patches that are not so unpleasant to wear - my little girl wore them - they fit over their glasses. Sorry to hear about your little boy - it is hard, especially when people stare. I always found older people the worst.

she said best for when he sia t nursery or at home doing detailllled things

cod it might be small beer in the alehouse of life but it is a big deal at the time, particularly at the start. Ds is going to hospital on Monday to see if he has a squint (pretty sure he has) and I'm already feeling a little wobbly at the thought of glasses/patching on him, even though I have been through it before.
