'supposed to be very good for building immunity against bird flu apparently '

How so? Bird flu is a totally different strain. It's not even human, that's why it's so lethal. If and when it combines, it can do so w/a strain A, a strain C, or even learn to get into the human population and transmit w/o ever combining w/a human strain - that's what the Spanish Flu apparently did.

oh its prob a load of bolleaux I know

just the received country wisdom down here atm

expatinscotland · 05/02/2006 15:23

I'm just hoping this bird stuff all goes the way of the dinosaur. I LOVE birds! Went to feed some lovely swans and mallards in teh Botanic Gardens today. What beauties!

hellsbellsdownunder · 05/02/2006 15:28

ds (18) has had this for a couple of weeks now - still feels and looks ill. Temperature, very sore throat, pale, sinus pain, headache and lethargy. AWFUL!!

expatinscotland · 05/02/2006 15:29

Flu SUX! Get jabs, people!

Nbg · 05/02/2006 15:33

We've all had it here and it's started out as aches but finished as different things altogether.

Dh's came out as Gastric Flu, lasted a week
FIL has had a chest infection, still got it after 2 weeks and AB's
DD and I have just had a common cold.
MIL has started with it on Friday but hers is a bit strange. The side of her face has gone a bit numb and she said she feels disorientated?

HellKat · 05/02/2006 15:34

Ds1 (13) had it last week. Luckily only really bad Friday. Still recovering now (sore throat, hacking cough, dark circles, etc) and think i'm coming down with it. oh joy! I'm just hoping little ds2 (22mths) does'nt get it.
I knew it was doing the rounds but not to this extreme. Stacks of kids were off from his school the last 2 weeks too.

swedishmum · 05/02/2006 16:13

Dd1 had a flu jab (asthmatic)but still has the bug - she's been totally lethargic since Thursday morning and certainly won't be back at school for a few days. Loads off at her school apparently.

expatinscotland · 05/02/2006 16:14

i've gotten flu even after having a jab, BUT it was nowhere near as bad as the full on business.

Mercy · 05/02/2006 17:49

The flu jab won't stop you getting flu, it will only lessen the symptoms/and or the number of days you are ill (ie, before you get to chest infection stage).

dd has been really knocked back by this (it's definitely Influlenza B) in the last 3 days. See this

Sorry, I'm rubbish at links. Basically, it's teh Health Protection Agency's press release of 3/2/06

Com'ere, it was a duff link~~~~~~~~~run girl run.

HenniPenni · 05/02/2006 17:56

The flu jab will only protect you against the strain of flu that the innoculation is produced for, so, it will prevent that strain but will not prevent you getting any other strain that is knocking about.

Mercy · 05/02/2006 17:59

Thanks Lady Sherlock! - tbh, I don't understand the instructions given in the box

expatinscotland · 05/02/2006 18:27

The jab protects against three of the most common forms going in any given year - two type As and one type B.

Mercy · 06/02/2006 17:08

Are your children sleeping a lot whilst they've got this bug?

dd slept for 3 hours yesterday afternoon, woke up for an hour and then went back to sleep for 12 hours. Today she has been asleep on and off since 11.30 this morning! It's not like her at all, also she's hardly eaten anything in the last 3 days or so - she looks so thin

Maybe I'm just not used to dd being ill, she's only been to the doctor 3 or 4 times since she was born. She's usually dramatically ill for 24 hours (raging temp, projectile vomiting) and then right as rain.

mykidsmum · 06/02/2006 17:14

yep mercy, my ds1 aged 4, slept 4 hour on sat, 3 hours on sun and is currently asleep. he is still sleeping at night, he feels better in himself but no way can i send hime to school when he is sleeping this much

SleepyJess · 06/02/2006 17:18

My DS (age 5) has it. His temp keep going up and down but responds quite well the Brufen and Calpol (alternating). He has the cough too. Hope he's not off school for ten days!!

Milliways · 06/02/2006 17:31

Mine were both off school for a week (DD started Friday night) & were wiped out first week back.

DH had a Friday & following week off. Was not right last weekend but getting sooo much grief from work about responsibilities etc he has gone back today Hope he gets home before the usual 9pm+. He also thinks they will not alloe him to take next week off (half-term) even though booked!

Beetroot · 06/02/2006 17:33

two of my ds's have it. one is not at all well. halluncinating and nightmares. Is still very off colour and having bad thoughts, which I guess are to do with the visrus and feeling vunerable.

controlfreaky · 06/02/2006 17:46

had the lurgy over christmas. lasted 10 days in all really.... v v grim but did go in end (just in time to go back to work / school.

Mercy · 06/02/2006 19:00

Thanks everyone. Has anyone taken their child to the doctor yet? dd has been ill for 5 days, but only very noticeably so since Saturday! tbh I can guess waht the doctor will say.

She's still sleeping on and off - since mid-day or thereabouts! Weird
