I seem to have sprung a leak - any opinions?

I am leaking what appears to be water from my legs.

Several weeks ago I was sitting on the floor, legs out in front of me, and I felt something wet run down my lower leg. I looked at it was water. I thought a drop of water had fallen onto me - so looked up, thinking water was coming from the ceiling - nothing.

Several minutes later, same again.

After a few drops, I realised this 'water' was coming from me. From no obvious hole or scratch or anything, drops of water are pushing thru my skin (pore? hair follicle?)

It stopped and I thought 'weird' and promptly forgot about it - as you do!

However, it has happened so many times since then, and now the other leg too.

I do not want to go to the gp because it is the most odd thing to say - i am crying thru my legs!! He is going to think I have lost the plot!

So does anyone have a clue what this is?

collect a sample in a vial to give 2 ur gp

tillykins · 31/01/2006 18:42

never heard of anything like it
agree, get sample and go to gp
then come back and tell us what it is!

Mytwopenceworth · 31/01/2006 18:44

I never thought of trying to collect some to take to gp.

What would I do without the mn brain?

Do you think it is sweat of sorts?

mszebra · 31/01/2006 18:46

do you think you have swelling in your legs? Water retention....? Could be a sign of electrolyte imbalance, maybe.

tillykins · 31/01/2006 18:47

presumably is sweat - unless your bladder has bypassed the usual channels and you are weeing out of your legs I'm kidding BTW!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 31/01/2006 18:49

I would definitely go to your gp - ive never heard of this before. It might be something simple so go just to get your mind put at rest.

chapsmum · 31/01/2006 18:50

are your legs particularly swollen??

Mytwopenceworth · 31/01/2006 18:56

I hadn't considered sweat - no sweat anywhere else, and thought it a strange place to sweat from if no sweat from usual places like armpits, hairline etc

It is, well if you sit on your bum with your legs out in front of you, toes pointing to ceiling. from knees down to ankle, right down the middle. a drop might appear out of my skin halfway between my knee and my ankle.

msxebra - i do have a water retention problem. i am on blood pressure tablets and water tablets. But I have never ever heard of anyone with water retention springing a leak and my gp didnt say this could happen when he gave me the pills - does this happen?

I have seen this in patients before. If you press the skin with your finger and hold it does it leave an imprint?

chapsmum · 31/01/2006 19:05

If this is the case, It is not as a result of the tablets, but probably as a result of the water retention and bp problem.
Water retention means just that, and due gravity your legs are the place where most fluid collects. This could just be caused by you being on you feet to much, however, it could also be a sign that your medication is not working properly, go back to the gp for a bp and a blood test to make sure your kidneys are ok.

not behind my knees fio - middle of the front of my leg, - my shin.

chapsmum - just checked-it does indeed leave a big big imprint, all white depression that slowly smooths out. have been stupidly pressing myself everywhere - seems an all over thing! really bad on legs and feet and fingers but also can make huge depressions on my tummy around my belly button and whole area.

mtpw - my DH has this. Massive dimples on the shins etc. He went to GP and tested his bp - sky high (160/120!!) Put on a healthy eating and mild exercise regime. Now taking strong bp tablets as they think by reducing his bp first should have the knock on effect of reducing the water retention. Been on the tablets for a couple of weeks and has improved.
Do you sit/immobile for lengths of time? My DH sits at desk for hours and told to get up every half hour and walk for a few mins to get ciculation going etc
Don?t worry about it - if it is bp and/or water retention it is treatable but needs treating properly.

LemonTart · 31/01/2006 19:21

the dimple thing is a massive clue that you most likely have water retention. Often in women it can be worse few days before your period.

chapsmum · 31/01/2006 19:35

sounds like your a bit water logged!
You really need an mot at the gp's, you dont have to leak in front of him there are other ways of testing for being waterlogged.
(The condition is called pitting oedema and cqn be quite serious.)
To the gp surg with you!

colditz · 31/01/2006 19:37

He will not think you are insane, I have seen this quite a lot in people who have water retention and are3 on water tablets. I am not a nurse, though, just a carer and can't tell you exactly what is going on, but I know we used to call the Gp if this happened, andf he used to tinker with the water meds....

charliecat · 31/01/2006 19:38

OMG, I hope your OK, but whatevers wrong with you is making me giggle

Mytwopenceworth · 31/01/2006 19:42

thanks guys.

chapsmum i thought you said spitting oedema! - what an apt name i thought.

will go to gp - since it now appears i am not mad.
