Does anyone fancy diagnosing the problem behind my brother's huge neck?

Just spoken to my db, aged 24.

He has had a pain behind his ear for 2 days, then this morning woke up to a huge growth on his neck behind his ear. He said it is so swollen on the back and side it looks like another neck attached to his...

The GP hadn't a clue so sent him to ENT at his local hospital. They checked his ear and put a camera down his nose and throat, all of which were clear. The registrar was at a loss but said it's a solid mass, sent him away with ABs and he's got to go back tomorrow morning for an ultrasound.

Any ideas?? (I realise noone can diagnose over the internet, was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.)

He turned up for his ultrasound, but they had no appointments, so they sent him home. I guess they can't be too concerned!

OH mate, I am so sorry. WHat is the treatment they are suggesting?

magso · 15/03/2012 11:38

Oh cupoftea I am so sorry. Do you know what type (Hodgkins?) and what treatment they are planning. Anything we can do to help?

QuintessentialyHollow · 15/03/2012 11:39

Sorry to hear these news. Sad

To early for a prognosis?

DaftMaul · 15/03/2012 11:41

Cup, so sorry to read this.

You have had so much to cope with recently. I wish you and your family lots of strength to deal with this too.

cupofteaplease · 15/03/2012 11:59

I'm just heading over to see him now, he was too upset on the phone to say much through the tears. He's scared.

I'm not sure how much more my mum can cope with. Sad He's only 24 for crying out loud.

Oh cup I am so very sorry.

Thinking of you all xx

smee · 15/03/2012 12:26

Oh no - your poor brother. Hard not to, but try not to panic - lymphoma quite often is treatable. Trust the medics, odds are they can help him.

JasperJohns · 15/03/2012 12:32

Really sorry to hear this. I have read your other threads so know you could really do without this.

I hope he will be ok.

AllShiney · 15/03/2012 12:42

Oh no :(

Take care of each other and I hope he's on the mend soon.

ohmeohmy · 15/03/2012 12:55

Oh no. Like smee said, some lymphoma is treatable. Fingers crossed for him.

FriskyBivalves · 15/03/2012 13:03

Oh cupoftea i have lurked on your previous threads and am aware of what youve been enduring. Massive sympathies. But on a more positive note, I've had two friends with hodgkins and two relatives with non-hodgkins. And I know it's super scary but they are all still with us and in complete remission. One of the big issues can be identifying which type of lymphoma it is but then they will set to with amazing bespoke treatments. Eg, there is a fantastic new treatment that my step PIL has had and his condition at one point looked really bleak. And he's now fine. Is still being treated just for maintenance but that's precautionary.

Lots of virtual hand-holding.

cupofteaplease · 15/03/2012 13:54

Well I've just been to see him and he was very upbeat, we were joking and laughing as usual. I think he'll be ok.

He's having a biopsy on Monday to determine the type of lymphoma. Then within a week he's having a full body scan to check there's no other cancer (as he has a nasty cough), then they told him treatment would probably be radiotherapy.

He looked very ill when I saw him on Sunday, but strangely he looked relaxed and well today.

Thank you for the best wishes and hand holding. Smile

So sorry to hear about your db but glad to know he's feeling upbeat. Glad too that the docs are looking after him and that he'll be seen so quickly. Wishing him the best. I know it's so easy to say...but try not worry and take it one day at a time.

Kayzr · 15/03/2012 14:03

I am really sorry to hear this, its good he feels upbeat and is acting like normal. I hope that all goes well with the scan.

AllShiney · 15/03/2012 15:10

I'm glad he's feeling a bit more upbeat. Sometimes having a plan of attack can help.

Hope your luck changes soon - you certainly deserve it to!

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/03/2012 15:49

Oh Cup - sorry to hear this. Fingers crossed for all of you. Glad to hear he looks better though.
