Does anyone fancy diagnosing the problem behind my brother's huge neck?

Just spoken to my db, aged 24.

He has had a pain behind his ear for 2 days, then this morning woke up to a huge growth on his neck behind his ear. He said it is so swollen on the back and side it looks like another neck attached to his...

The GP hadn't a clue so sent him to ENT at his local hospital. They checked his ear and put a camera down his nose and throat, all of which were clear. The registrar was at a loss but said it's a solid mass, sent him away with ABs and he's got to go back tomorrow morning for an ultrasound.

Any ideas?? (I realise noone can diagnose over the internet, was just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.)

My brother had Hodgkins about 30yrs ago now and he is alive and well ,at the time he was in stage three and we were all so scared.he is fine now and very healthy,he was 23 at the time.I think they used to call it the young mans disease ,although of course females can get it too.And the treatment has moved on all those years now.Sending your brother my good wishes and hope that you will have the same outcome that we did.

So sorry to hear that cuppa, and how is your littlest sugar bowl these days? (sorry if I've missed something)

I've had non hodgkins lymphoma. When I read your thread title I though " oh. I had a huge swollen neck before I was diagnosed"
I'm so sorry for you, but if he is strong I'm sure he will get through this. I'm still here [ smile]
Any questions feel free to ask me,although it was 1998 when I had mine ( seems like yesterday, yet seems such a long time since too!)

WentworthMillerMad · 19/03/2012 17:24

Mairy I know what you mean. I had hodgkins in 2000 and my only symptom was a huge swollen neck.
Feels ages ago / like it was yesterday!
Good luck OP, here if you need me.

Cup, I got Hodgkins at about the same age as your brother (and with the big swelling on the neck) and that was nearly 30 years ago (but please don't tell anyone I'm that old.) In those days I remember that the stats said it affects about 4 times as many males as females, and as a doctor friend said, if you are going to get something, the lymphomas are the best to get because the cure rates are very high, and the treatment is not as bad as some others. I got chemo as an outpatient and was still able to work in a fairly demanding professional job. No recurrence since then.

I always felt that it was more difficult for my family to cope with than me. I knew what I had to do to get better, such as take the chemo, but they had to stand to one side and see me suffer, as they said. I could focus on the cure, but it was more difficult for them. So I've got lots of sympathy for you, as well as your brother, as in many ways your emotions are as topsy turvy as his. Keep us all posted as to how he and you are getting on!
