Happy - right at the bottom of this:

kentgynaecologist.com/tvt.html

stretching the tape is mentioned so try not to worry. (Couldn't do a link but not too complicated an address if you want to have a look!)

happy2beme · 24/03/2012 13:23

Thanks Fen read this earlier today x But It seems that most tape stretching done due to difficulty voiding ?? I dont have that prob and most is done in begining . I have a tugging in left side of groin and discomfort at times ( depending on position) so I was genuinely happy to leave thinngs as is even sex is not uncomfortable , granted there is a small bit peeking through on right side, that does not seem to worry me I know that is just a simple case of covering it up, I hope !! . I cant get my head around how they will stretch something that is embeded. I have read that they can't detach the ends, so they must have to stretch it elsewhere lol have vision of biggest dilator they can find lol eek!! I am thinking of the pain after :( . He said that recovery time will be shorter 2 weeks and that the stretching usually helps the discomfort. If worse comes to worse he could remove it but I am not in that much discomfort and would not like to go back to wetting myself which he says probs would happen.Anyway this is minor compared to other peoples issues , just thought I was over it and really need to get back to work mentally and financaily , depending on date given I may go back then go back of again x

fengirl1 · 24/03/2012 17:22

Sorry to hear this is worrying you, Happy. Could you see him or call him to ask your questions? (Says the person who lost all sanity the last time they saw a consultant and had a completely blank mind...) sorry I can't help more. X

tazzle · 24/03/2012 22:45

thats good news ben10 ........ constipation def not advisable. !!!

all the very best for monday . at least with this brilliant weather we can get out and relax in the sun... whopppppeeeeeee

good to get it all tested tink then make a decision ..... I think there are two ways to look at it. If it affects quality of life then go for it no matter the "grade"..... but as you say prob better see if diagnosing and fixing the other things makes life better. NO reason to have an op if its not gonna make a significant change for the better.

fengirl1 · 25/03/2012 21:27

Anyone know what happened to Nannasylv? She seems to have disappeared...... Hoping she's ok.

fengirl1 · 25/03/2012 22:20

Sorry - having a bad moment now.... Please keep your fingers crossed for me that the reason that my dr has my results and I don't is just poor admin.... Going to chase them tomorrow.

tazzle · 25/03/2012 23:07

fengirl ....... my feeling is that if it was summat serious they would be calling you to come in rather than delaying. Can understand how you feel though (((0))). but please try not to worry.

fengirl1 · 26/03/2012 16:10

Thanks Tazzle - panic over (it's always at night when I'm tired and alone) - results normal. Just the ultrasound on fri and then I can 'look forward' to the op!

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 26/03/2012 17:38

Anterior and posterior repair done this morning under a spinal. I was petrified of hearing or seeing anything but I told the anaethetist how scared I was and she put something in my canula which made me pleasantly woozy. Didn't feel any of the surgery at all. Would highly recommend a spinal as I feel so much more well than after my GAs. I can keep food and drink down no problem. Nice bit of oramorph and a paracetemol drip has sorted me out. I'm lucky and have private insurance I'm in the same ward as before and the nurses and medical staff all recognise me. That makes me feel very cared for :)

Wishing the rest of you such good care xx

tazzle · 26/03/2012 17:38

:o :o :o :o fengirl ....... such a relief to get it "officially". I had to wait for results a while back ... one for uterus and the year before was called back after boob screeeing to go for a scan as summat found on chest wall. That turned out to be a little knot of blood vessels..... and reassuring that they can and do pick up on things so small and not just in the breast itself.

glad there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I still have a little cough .... its improving each day but by heck I am cutting it fine to get me past the aneasthetist as well as not putting strain on my bits post op.

tazzle · 26/03/2012 17:45

brilliant news Ben10 ..... sooooo glad all has gone well , that you feel well enough to have posted here and that you are pain free .........yiippeeeee

onwards and upwards !!!

Littlefish · 26/03/2012 18:16

Ben10 - great to hear from you so soon, and really glad the op seems to have gone well.

Did you go for nighties in the end? Would you recommend them over pyjamas?

fengirl1 · 26/03/2012 18:17

That's good news Ben10!
Tazzle hope you get rid of the pesky cough soon.

fengirl1 · 26/03/2012 18:18

Little - x-post. I have gone for a highly practical nightie in white with black dots - will wait and see if I'm brave enough on the day. Smile

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 26/03/2012 18:18

thanks.

i'm still in a gown as have the catheter, their pad, and the pack but got two primark nighties.

tazzle · 26/03/2012 18:25

I had to go buy a nightie last week .... hate wearing them Blush but needs must I suppose being practical for two days. Maybe I will shorten it after to be a top of pyjamas and just buy some pj bottoms to go with it lol

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 26/03/2012 19:19

I think that mine were £4 in Primark, They might be binned or freecycled after. I like a nice pair of PJs :)

surewoman · 26/03/2012 23:43

Hi Ben10 - so glad it was a positive experience for you. How long are you going to be in hospital?

Could you do me a favour and ask your consultant a few questions for me if you have a chance?

  1. Would he ever do anterior and posterior as day surgery, sending you home 4 hours later?
  1. Does he always carry out tests before operating (e.g. urodynamics, defectogram (sp?) etc?
  1. How many times does he see the patient before operating? Is it only an initial consultation or does he explain what he is going in further detail before operating?
  1. In day surgery, how long do they give each operation? Is it approx an hour per patient?
  1. Does he recommend using pds sutures in vaginas?

Just wondering, as am doing some homework on this and need my weapons to be fully loaded before I strike!! Wink

Thank you so much in advance and sorry to ask as you are probably a bit sore right now! Keep smiling xxxx

Hugs to all x

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 27/03/2012 06:42

Hi Sure

I can answer a couple of them already as he isn't coming till tonight.

  1. He said on the NHS it is a "day surgery" or a 23 hr stay (I'm sure the 23 hr bit is important)
  2. I didn't have any other tests apart from him doing an internal but I didn't have any urinary problems or anything really apart from the bulges and constipation. There were signs all over the wall though in the NHS clinic where I saw him about urodynamics etc)
  3. I saw his registrar in clinic, then went through to see him in a wierd interconnecting room where he discussed the options, did drawings etc, explained the procedure, gave me the choice of NHS or private when I asked. I then saw him yesterday morning before the op and then after the op.
  4. Mine was about 45 minutes I believe
  5. He told me that the internal stitches holding the muscles together are disolvable but will take about 6 months (?) and the ones holding the inside of the vagina were much shorter but can't remember how long he said now - is in the info sheet he gave me but its in my bag and they'll tell me off if I get up!

Did you not have to have a pack for 24 hrs and a catheter? They said that it was standard. I've had oramorph twice, IV paracetemol, naproxen and just had normal paracetomol as well as my normal meds. How do you cope with pain relief if you are sent home after 4 hrs. That makes me so shocked. Did you have a GA for it and then home after 4 hrs??? Shock

Will ask him more info later

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 27/03/2012 07:37

there was definitely some ovigral (?) used as I remember hearing that as they always ask for it when they are doing surgery on Holby City Blush

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 27/03/2012 08:24

Also they have done blood tests this morning to check Full Blood Count and kidney function. How do they do that if you are discharged after 4 hours Angry

ZumbaZara · 27/03/2012 13:26

Hi there. I have just been reading through your amazing , informative , funny discussions. I am going in for a repair operation on Friday 13th of April!!! I am going for my pre-op next Monday.

Any advise on what to ask? I need a rectocele repair but they may decide to do other reapir and a hystercetomy depending on what they find?

wouldratherbeskiing · 27/03/2012 15:24

Littlefish - definitely recommend nighties over PJ's. I only took PJ's and quickly realised they were not going to work with a cathetar!!! My 84 year old mother had to bring one in for me Shock. Won't make that mistake again!

Two weeks' post op tomorrow for rectocele and recovering really well. No pain relief necessary. Just been back on 'the ward' to see a friend who's had a front wall repair and hysterectomy - she had back wall repair a year ago. Two weeks seems like a lifetime ago. Still mindful not to overdo things as I don't want to end up back there.

Glad all seems to be going well here on the forum.

wouldratherbeskiing · 27/03/2012 15:43

ZumbaZara - welcome. I am a very recent poster on here and count myself lucky to find this forum which contains a wealth of information and have a close friend who had recently been through the operation.

I too went in not knowing whether they would do a hysterectomy and the rectocele repair - in the end I only had the repair. Having come out the other end I can say it was not as bad as I had imagined, especially as I felt I had literally dragged myself to the finishing line both emotionally and physically. I had my operation in the morning and stayed 2 nights in hospital.

They should talk through with you about what anaesthetic you prefer. I was offered a spinal block with sedation or a general anaesthetic. You'll be given all sorts of handouts and information at the pre-op. My mind has gone blank as to what you can ask at the pre-op as I think they covered everything I needed to know there. This forum informed me of the more emmm practical side .... like glycerine suppositories if you are really finding it difficult to 'go', in fact I found all the bowel things on this forum to be helpful. Others will probably have more helpful advice re questions for pre-op but if you have specific questions I'll try to help.

surewoman · 28/03/2012 07:44

Hi Ben10 - thanks so much for all your answers. I hope you are still feeling ok and are probably heading off home soon? Smile.

I had a general as had been told at the pre-op that it would be general or spinal but on the day they wanted to do it under local, at which point I refused and demaned a general. They made me get out of bed after an hour of waking up and sit in a chair (big ouch) and I was given tramadol and co-codomol in pill form. The nurse had to get me dressed as I couldn't do it myself and then needed oxygen as I was about to pass out! My brother came to collect me and had to half carry me to the car. When I got home I had a massive bout of projectile vomiting, so not a good experience at all !

So glad it has all been good for you, and if anyone else is offered day surgery for this DO NOT do it - you need the bed at least over night, just for reassurance if nothing else, it is a money saving NHS cost cutting scheme and for me has resulted in 3 further admissions and theatre, so not affective in saving money!

Rant over xxxxxx Love to all and good luck to those going under the knife soon!
