This thread is for everyone who wants to stick to their diet, and would like to benefit from public support in doing so.

Rules for participants:

  1. Define your own limits - post them here or keep to yourself, but be clear and specific about which foods are allowed and which ones are not;

  2. Keep your diary - post here on a daily basis what you've eaten, and how this deviates - if it does - from your goals;

  3. Be honest;

  4. 1 month commitment required - which means that even if you have a diet slip, you are still expected to keep posting your daily reports (and hopefully get back on track in the meantime) until at least 1 February;

Feel free to talk about anything health and diet related - especially the difficulty you're facing when trying to change your eating habits - but please be supportive and sensitive to other people's decisions/choices. Negative or judgemental posts about somebody else's ability to keep to their promises strictly not allowed.

Remember - this thread is more about making it happen than talking about it.

Believe in yourself! You're doing this to become a better YOU.

Mama, 1lb a week is still good, if it takes time to come off, it is more likely to stay off. Well done!

fluffyanimal · 09/01/2012 09:51

Migrating, welcome!

You are doing about the same as me. I'm also trying to reduce portion size. I recommend setting realistic goals, i.e. aiming for a small weight loss each week and putting your ideal goal weight a realistic time away (e.g months rather than weeks). Don't weigh yourself too often. Can you work in any exercise?

Better to stay on this thread than make your own - we are all in the same boat here!

MegBusset · 09/01/2012 09:51

Hi Migratingsouth, welcome to the thread :)

Perhaps if you post a typical day's food we can give you some ideas of how to be more healthy?

Woolwif · 09/01/2012 17:35

Hi Migrating I know I've found it really helpful reporting back on a daily basis what I've eaten, does make you think twice about whether you're really hungry or just bored. The other thing that has made a massive difference to my weight is trying not to eat carbs after about 4pm. I reckon since I stopped regularly having pasta, rice or potatoes in the evenings my weight fluctuates (depending on how much chocolate I've eaten) around a point that is about 10 lbs lighter. I'm not a massive carb fan so it's been quite easy to substitute them with loads of veg instead. Have been doing this for a couple of years now and even though I put some weight on before Christmas, I was still lighter than I was previously. Understand this doesn't suit everyone but has really worked for me.

liveinazoo · 09/01/2012 20:11

So, a little bit heavy on the chicken (leftovers from Sunday lunch) and I ate dinner later than I would have liked because DH was out. I'm still awaiting delivery of the blardy shred dvd Hmm No doubt I'll be moaning even more when it does eventually arrive Wink

Woolwif · 09/01/2012 21:58

Hello all, old and new

After last night's unfortunate ambush by the box of chocolate pralines, I'm back on the straight and narrow:

Bfast: porridge plus half a banana
Lunch: pesto chicken, cucumber and tomato wholemeal sandwich
Dinner: Vege bolognese, orange
Drinks: diet coke, lots and lots of water.

Plus (in addition to working) had my legs waxed and explained the facts of life to my very inquisitive nearly 9 year old (not at the same time, i hasten to add). So all in all quite a successful day :)

migratingsouth · 09/01/2012 22:44

Hiya, thanks for the welcome
This dieting stuff's not so bad is it

What do I usually eat? OK, here goes ...

Breakfast - porridge with DS (if time)
Snack - chocolate brownie or pan-au-chocolate & coffee (2 sugars)
Lunch - soup and cheese sandwich or humous wrap. Coffee (2 sugars)
Break - coffee (2 sugars) or tea (no sugar) with biscuits
If late at uni - crisps & chocolate bar
Dinner - small dinner with DS (veg sausage, mash & cheese perhaps)
Late dinner (usually after 9) - adult dinner with DP (something vegetarian and homemade but probably very rich and cheese-based) often with 2 or 3 real ales or glaseses of wine
Snacks - a bit of cheese pretty much every time I walk past the fridge.
Sometimes - late snack (e.g. cheese on toast).

Ha! And I wonder why I'm so fat?! Grin

Why am I overeating so much?! Well pre-DCs, I used to have a pretty active life and was out a lot. I'd often miss meals and I rarely snacked. I hardly ate chocolate. However when I did eat I'd eat big meals to make up for it.

Now I'm a mum and studying I'm in all the time. (Or at uni near their lovely brownies!) So I never miss meals these days, but I haven't adjusted the potion size! Also I just don't seem to get full like other people, I really can just carry on!

Oh and also I'm veggie and have come to rely slightly too much on cheese as my main source of protein.

My plan is if I just cut out all the cheese, chocolate and alcohol, and control the portion sizes then it should drop off, no?

Also I plan to keep snacking while at home, (I reckon substitution is more realistic than denial, and it helps me study!) but I should snack on healthy stuff (like carrots) not lumps of cheese!

I'd like to eat earlier in the evening too, but not sure how I can make that work with our schedule.

Glenshee · 09/01/2012 22:48

Stayed up late yesterday and feel very tired today.

Feel like I was eating non-stop from lunchtime until 4pm :( :( :( This can't be right. However I have not violated any of my rules with respect to what I ate!

B - puffed rice, milk, raisins, hemp protein powder
snack - raw carrots, some dried cranberries
L - raw veg salad, jacket potato, cottage cheese
snack (so to speak) - half a pack of dried cranberries, half a pack of almonds (pretty much the only nuts not causing me trouble), cold couscous salad with raisins and egg
T - chips; roasted veg salad

2 cups of decaf coffee, 2 cups of green tea
6 glasses of water
Vitamin C and Magnesium tablets

OP posts:
migratingsouth · 09/01/2012 22:52

Today I ate:

Breakfast: porridge (with sultanas and half a banana)

Morning break: Coffee (only 1 sugar & no chocolate treat!)

Lunch: Freshly made soup and a plain roll (no wrap or sandwich!) with tea (instead of coffee with sugar)

Afternoon break: fizzy water

Journey home - I cracked and got a flapjack for the train (I was hungry!) The cafe had shut and it was the least bad thing in the vending machine I think (small, organic, fairtrade, not crisps / chocolate). The packet said it was 176 Kcals. Is that a lot?

Dinner with DS - I had bowl of scotch broth (home made soup with veg, potato and pearl barley) and a roll.

Dinner with DP - second bowl of scotch broth (no roll)

I'm very pleased with myself for grating cheese for DS's dinner and not having even a little bit! (This is very unusual for me!)

Also I told the nice women in the cafe at uni that I'm not allowed biscuits / chocolate things :)

migratingsouth · 09/01/2012 22:53

Oh, weight. I don't own scales. (Maybe I should get some?)

But I weighed myself at MILs last week and I'm nearly 15 stone.

migratingsouth · 09/01/2012 22:57

Oh - goals. I'd like to be a size 12-14.

I haven't weighed myself regularly in years, so I'm really not sure how that relates to weight, but maybe 10 stone or so?

I'd like to feel fitter too.

migratingsouth · 09/01/2012 23:15

Last thing - DP is having a beer and I'm not :)

fluffyanimal · 10/01/2012 09:10

Well done Migrating. How tall are you? I'd be surprised if you needed to lose 10 stone!! if you are nearly 15 stone now, if you lost 10 stone you'd be under 5 stone, i.e. the weight of a primary-school child!!
Question: do you have to eat with DS and then DP? Why not just have fruit when DS is having his tea?
PS I work at a uni, I know how hard it is when relying on canteens and coffee bars, and how sedentary it is too!! I also liked to keep myself going mentally with a steady flow of snacks and hot drinks.

OK, my report for yesterday:
Breakfast: Oatibix, skimmed milk, 1 tsp sugar.
Lunch: Chicken and tomato sandwich, low fat mayo. Fat free yogurt. Digestive biscuit.
Dinner: Omlette made with 2 eggs, a little grated half-fat cheese, small portion oven chips, peas.

I'm doing well with portion control, but I don't feel full, so it is proving very hard resisting going back for more. So far I've managed it, though!

MorningCoffee · 10/01/2012 10:53

Morning all, I am being very good so far, I have only had a glass of water today, I need to eat now though, I should have had breakfast but not had time yet so off to find something healthy to eat now, will be back later.

MorningCoffee · 10/01/2012 10:54

I think migrating might mean she would like to get down to 10 stone or so, I may be wrong.

migratingsouth · 10/01/2012 12:13

Ooh yes, sorry I mean I'd be happy to be 10 stone or so, not that I want to lose 10 stone!

I did think that was a pretty reasonable goal. However it's suddenly dawned on me that that's a third of my body weight - eek!

I'm 5' 5.5"

fluffyanimal I now what you mean about not feeling full. I cracked last night. DP has 3 (3!!) cheese rolls as a snack around midnight, and I had one salad roll with minimal humous. I was really hungry!

DP is in good shape. He eats loads at home in the evening (lots of cheese too!) But he doesn't eat much outside of the house during the day and he gets a fair amount of exercise so it balances out I think.

migratingsouth · 10/01/2012 12:14

*had, not has - he doesn't eat that every night!

vanfurgston · 10/01/2012 15:43

Hi everyone, after a very arduous first week I feel like I have finally turned a corner. I dnt think abt food as much and can go a whole hr without thinking of wat to eat next
Although I have cheated somewhat with chocolate brownies for me not to obses constantly over food is huge.
