Sore lump on my gum,,,,,what are the chances that it will disappear by itself?

katymac · 05/12/2005 18:40

It's up by where the gum hits the lip and it's on the bone.....and it really hurts

I'm going on a course tomorrow and I hope it goes away by itself - cos I don't have time to see the dentist

What are my Chances?

Sounds like a dental abcess to me.

katymac · 05/12/2005 20:07

bu&&er - that's bad news isn't it?

It's a front tooth

I'm going to have to have it out - aren't I?

False teeth at 37

No, don't always have them out, not sure about front teeth but have had 2 on my molars and ha root canal work done.might need antibiotics as well.

Icemum · 05/12/2005 20:10

P.S Didn't know we were the same age!!

katymac · 05/12/2005 20:12

Why do I sound much older

It's (I think) on a tooth that has had a root filling (and is slowly turning grey)

So I may have to accept it's had it

OP posts:
Icemum · 05/12/2005 20:15

You don't sound old, just knowledgeable.

Would your dentist crown it? I'm supposed to be having one one but keep putting it off.

katymac · 05/12/2005 20:18

I have 2 crowns at the front anyway

But the dentist has been nagging me to have all 6 crowned (2 I've got are fairly crap, 1 is grey and 2 are well filled) but he says the one tooth left at the front would look odd with 5 crowns round it.......
But at £1200 - I'm a bit wary (esp as I have a dentist phobia)

LIZS · 05/12/2005 20:35

Sounds nasty . Try lots of sluicing with a strong antispetic mouthwash. I manage to contain the worst of an infection that way - used one of the Colgate ones, Peroxyl I think. You could also take ibruprofen. Can you phone your dentist surgery and see what they'd recommend.

katymac · 05/12/2005 21:00

I tried some teething gel - but it hasn't worked

I'm going to take some painkillers (paracetamol didn't hit it)

OP posts:
Icemum · 05/12/2005 21:05

When I have problems with mine from time to time (have a dental phobia but a brill dentist!) I alternate brufen and paracetamol for a few days, this usually does the trick whilst it goes down.

katymac · 05/12/2005 21:34

I took heavy duty painkillers (FOR MY BACK) They have worked

OP posts:
MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:29

Katymac, it does sound like an infection. It will not go away by itself!

The only way to get it sorted is either antibiotics or re-root canal treatment. If you leave it too long, it will give you horrendous pain & you will stand more of a chance of losing that tooth. The infected area will continue to grow the longer you leave & could (and probably wil) infect the teeth next to it!

Sod's law, it will play you up at the one time you can't get to a dentist, i.e 3 in the morning, sunday, xmas day. I have seen it all too often, pain gets ignore & the next thing you know 5pm on xmas eve & you're in agony, please go to your dentsit to save yourself alot of pain & money!

katymac · 05/12/2005 22:31

& I'm guessing that the painkiller I took at 9.30 isn't working anymore is a very bad sign

Oh well going to Egypt on 24th therefore must get it done soon

MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:32

Sorry Katymac, my post reads a little harsh to me!

Don't mean to be rude, just trying to stipulate the importance of getting it checked out.

katymac · 05/12/2005 22:33

Can I leave it till Wed or do I have to trash my course

OP posts:
MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:34

yep, katymac, affraid it is. PLEASE DO NOT fly before you get it checked out! The pressure can (not always) cause at lot of pain & discomfort.

You should get seen fairly quickly & usually (depending on extent of infection) antibiotics can clear it up in a week to 10 days!

MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:35

I think weds would be fine, ring 2moro for the appt tho, in case they cant get you in.

Take the best painkiller available & keep that area of your mouth as clean as possible, try etc.).

yULeYSEES · 05/12/2005 22:35

You could maybe try homeopathy as I've had amazing results using it

/ABC homepathy You'll find a remedy on here once you've done the checklist.

Otherwise afraid it's the dentist which you already know hun.

MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:37

the end of that post should read "try not to agrivate the tooth by biting anything hard for the next few days. Softish food only if you can"

katymac · 05/12/2005 22:40

OK soft food
Dentist appointment
Panic
Bu&&er as I said before

OP posts:
MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:42

I take it you don't like the dentists? If that is the case then it really is best you get sorted asap, to avoid extencive treatment.

Let me know how it goes, or post if you need any advice.

Good Luck

katymac · 05/12/2005 22:43

Do you agree that if 5 of my top front 6 teeth need crowning I should get all six done?

OP posts:
katymac · 05/12/2005 22:44

I spent over £300 on hypnotherapy last year (which really helped) but it didn't cure me of my phobia

OP posts:
MelissasSecretSanta · 05/12/2005 22:51

To say without seeing is difficult as it can depend on your dental history. But from your discription on an earlier post, it could be beneficial.

If a tooth is going grey, it usually means that it has been root treated & had therefore clincially "died". This causes the strucure to become more brittle, therefore prone to breaking. Heavily filled teeth are also at risk of breakage, especially if there is more filling material than tooth structure. Crowns, in these cases will hold the strucure together & prevent various repair & patch up jobs, that will start to look unsightly over time.

The other 2 "crappy" ones, well it's hard to tell, but generally, if you having the other four done for the above reasons, then 6 will be a better match & will look more natural.
