What (not scary) reasons are there for a missed period?

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 09:44

I was due on 3 weeks ago and still no sign.
Getting a bid worried now as always regular as clockwork, as in 28 days to the day. The only times I've ever missed one is when pregnant.

I'm sure I'm not pregnant but I'm up at least 3 times a night for a wee and my boobs are aching. What are reasons are there for those symptoms????

I've also got one sided pain in my stomach and just feel generally rubbish, like I'm on, but I'm not

The only thing I can think of is is that I've been on quite a few courses of antibiotics over the last few weeks (root canal problems) and I'm wondering if that's effected me. Can antibiotics do that?

I hope so!!

Are there any other reasons? I suppose I need to get myself to the doctors

i think youd best do a pregnancy test first , if only to rule it out. are you on the pill? antibiotics can stop it working. if negative then see a doctor. good luck

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 09:56

Not on pill.
I've been putting off going, as really worried there's something badly wrong with me
I'd better go Monday then.......
Thanks

Do you take contraceptive pills or anything?

First thing you need to do is take a pg test to be sure.

Whilst one the pill I went over a year with no periods at all; GP said it was fine for that to happen.

LilacBump · 03/12/2005 09:56

the only reason, apart from pregnancy, i missed two periods was because i was severely anemic.

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 09:58

Not on any contraception. Use condoms.
Haven't had sex since September though and have had two normal periods since then.

I may have lost a bit of weight, and was on loads of antibiotics for my tooth, but I don't know if that could do it, especially as I've always been so regular

How old are you?

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 10:00

25

low in iron
stress/anxiety

these are the only 2 reasons I can think of.

I was 2 weeks late a couple of months ago so I know how you feel...had even started thinking about baby names!! thankfully false alarm and I wasnt stressed/anemic so still dont know why i was so late.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to do a pg test.

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 10:05

possibly a bit stressed but nothing out of the ordinary for me!

What is the thing that begins with e, where you bleed inside? does anyone know the symptoms of that?

OP posts:
HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 10:08

endometitis (sp?) something like that........

OK, so at 25 you're not likely to be going through pre-menopausal symptoms. I missed a few periods when my sleeping was especially erratic, and I was exhausted.

Have you been dieting or exercising excessively?

hoxtonchick · 03/12/2005 10:11

if you're on the pill antibiotics can interfere with it.... have you done a pg test? hope everything works out.

gloworm · 03/12/2005 10:21

"endometriosis" is what you are thinking of...you could try a google search to find out more.

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 10:34

Not dieting or exercising
Not on pill
I will have a search for endometriosis, thanks

OP posts:
NannyL · 03/12/2005 10:46

i thought endometriosis gave you extreamly unbelievably bad pain. Im sure youd know if you have that!

LilacBump · 03/12/2005 10:52

have you got any problems with your thyroid?

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 10:57

I don't know anything about it, it's just something I've heard of, so wondered!

Don't have thyroid problems as far as I know, although it does run in my family, grandma, auntie, both cousins........

should probably ask for a blood test, shouldn't I?

i missed once happymum and i was having very bad abdominal pains and generally felt like rubbish. it turned out to be nothing and doctors put it down to stress. (i wasnt stressed any more than normal). but thats all it was.

ENIDeepMidwinter · 03/12/2005 11:08

my friend just had this - normally as reg as clockwork

her dad had died a few months ago

the doc prescribed a short course of progesterone which she took, had a period, then nearly 8 weeks to the next one. Then went back to being regular again

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 03/12/2005 17:05

Thanks both of you
I'm hoping it's just a 'blip' in my cycle.
Never had one before, so I suppose it had to happen at some point!
I have been quite stressed about my tooth (front one which I thought I was going to lose) so maybe it was that. Dd's father turning up after 18mths hasn't helped matters much, so maybe it is stress!
Although like you nightowl, I don't feel anymore stressed than normal!
Oh well, off to doctors on Monday for me then......

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 12:29

Went to doctors this morning. Not pregnant and no urine infection
She thinks it's probably down to stress so it's just a case of waiting.........
Thanks all

still haven't come on........ getting a bit worried now

Had some bloods taken on Monday - as have still not had a period I just phoned for my results and apparently, my hormone levels are 'normal' so would that rule out PCOS does anyone know???

But, my thyroid is low, at 13. The normal range is 12-22, so they want to re test it in the new year. Now I've not got the doctor on the phone I've got loads of questions!!

Does anyone know if that level would be enough to stop my periods completely???

Thyroid does run in my family so I'm kind of hoping it is that rather than anything else.

I had an internal which was normal, so only other test is a scan I think, which GP said they don't do unless you are trying to concieve.........

Oh you poor thing...Back to the Drs again.
This happened to my mum, but I can't remember what the problem was (nothing scary) although she does have underactive thyroid
