Grockle - are you absolutely sure you should be driving?

Have you asked your doctor?

Grockle · 20/06/2011 22:17

I only drive when I feel confident that I can. Often I am ok in the morning and have dizzy phase(s) during the day but don't go home til I am alright again. I can feel it coming so have warning and won't drive when I feel it starting. But, if I have had a recent dizzy spell, I won't drive a minibus full of other people's children - I'd be livid if a teacher did that with DS. Interestingly (or not), I tend to be worse at work. I wonder if there is a link - stress?

When I see the Gp, I shall ask but I am very careful and don't want to put other drivers at risk, hence me not getting in the car if I am feeling at all woozy.

Grockle · 20/06/2011 22:22

I feel really bad now! I am careful, honest. I have called in sick when I knew I wasn't safe to drive.

MoreBeta · 20/06/2011 22:46

Grockle - as I said up the thread my wife could never drive. If you cause an accident and you have a condition like this you could be in very very serious trouble. Its like driving when you are tired.

Your GP should sign you off sick if you really are unfit for work. It is horribly debilitating. I know you want to keep soldiering on - I live with someone who has that mindset. Sometimes though you have to admit you are too ill.

MoreBeta · 20/06/2011 22:47

Yes stress makes it much worse.

enidroach · 21/06/2011 09:29

I admire Grockle for holding down a job. I have been a SAHM since I got it and worked freelance from home when I can get contracts. All my DC are now at school and I really should be thinking about getting a job but I am really unsure that I could function full time in my old job. However, I have always pushed myself to attend meetings and ferry the DC to classes etc - I think it helps sometimes to have something to really push yourself for - perhaps part time work is the way to go, in order to still have rest time.

I think stress does make it worse, especially if you are conscientious like Grockle because coping with it all is tiring - your body is working to compensate all the time.

Also sometimes for many months things can be quite good for me - just the ear pressure, but at other times (such as during the recent hot spell) it can be quite bad and increasingly each month menstruation is now causing me problems.

Serc never worked for me. A few months ago I tried some Pzitiofen but even though I took it a few hours before bed I was like a zombie during the day and fell asleep in the afternoon and ended up late for school pickup even though I had set an alarm- but my ears were a bit clearer. The ENT said this medication works well for a lot of MAV cases ( some people put on weight though as it can make you hungry). I stopped it after a week as I have to be able to function for the Dc but may give it a go again in the summer when DP will be around as I have read taht for some the drowsiness decreases.

RichTeaAreCrap · 21/06/2011 11:24

I have heard that Pzitiofen can make you really tired and put on weight enid. There is another one that is meant to be good too for MAV cases - not sure of the name I think it begins with P though! (not much help I know).

essexgirl31 · 21/06/2011 18:45

Hi all,

Another rotten one for me today. I'm bit stressed at the moment with work so I know that won't be helping.

Weirdly I find driving fine. I think it's to to do with being in a confined space with no where to fall. The concentration also helps I think.

Enid - the book looks great. My ENT doctor recommended cutting out caffiene, chocolate, cheese and red wine. I am pretty much caffiene free now. I eat a bit of cheese as I am vegetarian. Giving up caffiene was awful! Terrible withdrawal symptoms.

Hope everyone is a well as can be

Grockle · 21/06/2011 20:22

Don't admire me - I'm not managing well at all! My job is quite stressful anyway so that doesn't help. I am seriously thinking about changing jobs for various reasons but in part to help with my health.

I don't drink wine or eat chocolate really (but did today and had quite a good day!), but I do drink caffiene. Maybe I should give it a miss. I'd struggle without cheese (also veggie)

Hope everyone feels better

RichTeaAreCrap · 21/06/2011 21:14

Hi all, sorry you had an awful day essexgirl.

I find driving ok too, but when I stop driving I always have a bad dizzy day if it has been a long drive.

I did cut out caffeine and red wine - it made no difference to me.

I have had an average day today, lets hope we all have a great one tomorrow.

essexgirl I drive too and manage fine but feel really washed out after - I think you are right that having to concentrate in a small space helps. I too am a veggie and found the migraine diet difficult as soy, pickles, onions etc were a no -no and I eat a lot of eastern food.

Years ago (in my early 30's) I gave up wine and cheese and caffeine and felt it had no effect, but last year (late 40's)when I started to get headaches on top of the dizzies I tried again and this time it did have an effect - especially the wine and caffeine. Cheese is ok -( but I've never been a fan) apart from hard italian cheeses such parmesan ,gran padano and pecorino which are salty and umani. I also gave up green tea which I drank by the bucketload - I stupidly had no idea just how much caffeine it contained - forced myself onto very weak redbush now.

hope everyone is having a better day

RichTeaAreCrap · 22/06/2011 19:46

I had a better day today, not too much dizziness. I can now feel pressure building up my neck/head though so I know tomorrow will be a bad day.

Isn't it strange how driving is ok for us but makes us all feel wiped out afterwards. I even tried to take travel sickness tablets to help with it but they didnt.

essexgirl31 · 22/06/2011 20:13

RTAC - pleased you had a better day. Mine has been hard again. I have pressure in my ears. I feel miserable. I pulled a muscle in my neck yesterday which is not helping!

Enid - I'm a rebush drinker now. I think I prefer it to normal tea.

I'm so pleased I can drive - the thought of not being able to drive terrifies me!!

Hope you all have good thursdays

RichTeaAreCrap · 22/06/2011 21:24

Oh no essexgirl, sorry to hear you have had a bad day. You are right, the neck muscle won't be helping at all.

I haven't tried redbush - I drink decaf tea all the time though. I really, really miss my coffee.

RichTeaAreCrap · 23/06/2011 16:58

I've driven today for a couple of hours - wasn't dizzy at all before I set off. Let's see if it triggers it tonight. Hope not but it usually does.

feedthegoat · 23/06/2011 17:10

Interesting to hear cheese and caffeine not being recommended. Cheese is causing me terrible problems anyway to the point where I am in the middle of trying a fortnight of going lactose free to see if I have an intolerance. The herbalist I asked for advice today advised trying to cut down on the paracetamol extra pills i use for headaches. I tend to find the dizziness is much worse when I have headache so tend to pill pop early doors rather than let them get too bad.

I had a bad case of insomnia last night and was awake till 3 am. I've been at work today after 3 hours sleep and feel like I'm coming down with a cold too so all in all feel like I need to hold onto the walls today.

Grockle · 23/06/2011 20:48

Oh dear, feedthegoat, Insomnia is horrible in itself without having vertigo too. Thankfully I've never suffered both at the same time - I think I'm so exhausted from being dizzy that I fall asleep quite quickly these days.

We're going away tomorrow so am hoping there'll be no dizziness since it's a 2 hr drive. I've had a good day today - only 1 brief dizzy spell that went away fairly quickly, so I'm feeling quite happy.

feedthegoat · 23/06/2011 20:56

The insomnia only started when i got labyrinthytis. When I lay down in bed I tend to feel like the room is spinning like it does when you are really drunk. Then panic sets in. I've never suffered from any form of anxiety or panic attacks before so this has all knocked me sideways really.

I'm stuck in a bit of a vicious circle now as also have IBS and suspected endometriosis and stress just seems to aggrevate the lot. I've been at that very low point of making myself ill worrying about being ill several times in the last few months Sad.

I hope you are ok tomorrow for your journey Grockle.

Grockle · 23/06/2011 21:51

That sounds awful, goat.

It's the feeling drunk that I hate - I stumble and feel sick and it's terrible, especially in public!

essexgirl31 · 24/06/2011 07:36

Hi all.

Pleased you had a good day Grockle. Hope your drive is ok.

Hope your drive didn't set off your dizziness RTAC (your name makes me laugh - I love Rich Tea Smile)

Hell FTG. You poor thing with the spinning in bed. I've never had that. It must be awful. I'm so tired from the dizziness too that I crash at night but wake at 4 really anxious about my day and worrying how I will feel. Sorry to hear about the IBS and endemetriosis - they are tough enough without Labyrinthitis. The emotional and mental strain of dizziness is so hard

I went out to a pizza express last night - the lighting is foul. I sat with my head in my hand the entire time. But hey I survived!!

Hope you all have good days.

javo · 24/06/2011 11:06

Feedthe goat -How horrid - I used to have the room spinning and then I would collapse and was totally freaked - but things did improve over time - just feel spacey nowdays . I have IBS too and I have had a problem with diary since birth - think all of it must be linked. Would recommend you get an ENT/Otology referral and have a look at the book I recommended in earlier post (about headaches but lots about dizziness as it can be MAV triggered by labs) www.amazon.co.uk/Heal-Your-Headache-David-Buchholz/dp/0761125663/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1308909786&sr=1-1).

essexgirl - well done going out and Grockle hope your drive goes well

RichTeaAreCrap · 24/06/2011 17:45

feedthegoat - I get exactly the same feeling when I lay down, as though I am drunk. Very odd too that I also have endometriosis and suspected IBS. I hope the 2 are not linked, although I have had endo for years and only been dizzy this last year.

I do that sitting with my head in my hands essexgirl - I had places with those awful lights.

essexgirl31 · 24/06/2011 18:57

I'm sure people must think I'm slightly mad when they see me sitting like that! When I walk I look like I'm drunk! What a mess.

I am going to order that book from the library. It looks good.

A hard day here again. I had to take the car into a garage for brake problems. They kept it in so I had to get the tube home. The tube was not fun - particulary negotiating the stairs with 2 small children and the pushchair. I'd love to feel normal doing normal things. One day...

Hope everyone is surviving

feedthegoat · 25/06/2011 11:25

I'll definately have a look at that book Javo. I suffer a lot with headaches as I only have sight in one eye (aren't I painting such a picture here, I feel like a right moaning minnie!).

I have also had problems with my periods for years richtea but have only just got anyone to take it seriously. Before I had ds I just believed drs explaination that I was just abit of a wimp with a low pain threshold. However, I was 9 and half cms dialated when arrived at hospital in labour as I was sat at home waiting for it to get worse than period pains! Only went when I did because of a bleed.

I'm still rough with my cold at the minute so just looking forward to that ending. I hope everyone else is ok.
