Just really sad SAF. A baby is now 'viable' from 23 weeks, not 22 plus 6, 23 weeks.
So many die or have such horrific disabilities. One had a hole in her heart and I saw the surgeon who did Nemo's emergency surgery again.
That took me back. He was ever so lovely. It's just hard to see because I know how the parents were feeling but weirdly, it gave me a sense of normality, like it wasn't just us that went through bad times.
Anyway, they are trying to change things because the number of babies who actually do survive, is so low compared to those that are kept alive and die a few weeks/days later.
They interviewed a girl of 21 who was prem (26 weeks) and she said how shit her life was, how scared she was about her parents dying, who would care for her, etc.... even though her parents had to pay for carers because once she left the hospital, that was it.
The NHS didn't provide any further care for her, almost 'well, we kept you alive, what more do you want from us?'
Saving 23 week prem babies is costing the tax payer and NHS millions per year, 10 million I think for all the equipment, training and the like.
But you would want that wouldn't you? You'd want them to do what they could for your baby? All the staff they interviewed said they wouldn't want them to keep their child alive because they've seen what happens.
I bet they change their minds if it was them in that boat. It is actually up to the parent/s.
Just made me think how very very lucky we are to have Nemo here at all, you know?
Sorry, not sure where that came from
Off out for a walk in the afternoon sunshine, it's gorgeous still here.
