Hiya everyone. Just wanted to say that all your stories are so inspiring. I am seeing the nurse about Champix in a couple of weeks, they won't do it now as am on high strength antibiotics. Would so love to be a non-smoker and I know the children would be very happy. The only thing that worries me is that I often feel down or sad for no particular reason and I do lose my temper quite easily as it is. Am a bit frightened that the Champix may turn me into an absolute monster. Have been finding that my chest is quite tight sometimes and my grandmother gave up smoking 3 years ago but still has terrible breathing difficulties and I am so frightened of being like her. My uncle also has this condition although he too has given up smoking but this obviously runs in our family. Does anyone have any advice? Many thanks all x

chickychick · 11/06/2011 16:59

Hi everybody well done l am just starting out on my journey on day 5 and am noticing little but signifiacnt changes which is good. This is my 3rd attempt but l will succeed l think the only thing l would say is try and choose a time that is good no major upheavels etc although not listening to my advice going through messy seperation but l thought l need to be able to take control of my life and this was the first and major thing l had to do. Frenchic the only advice is to let everyone know that you are trying to give up smoking and they will understand more as for feeling down yes they do make you feel down (some people) but you are aware that this can happen so you can prepare i.e l feel down but its ok l know its the champix. sorry don't know about the breathing condition but l am sure if you do dtop soon it can only help your lungs. Sorry a bit of a ramble

coco68 · 20/06/2011 07:30

Hi all of you, I am now 3 mths. not smoking and honestly have no desire
at all for a cigarette, I have about 7 left in a drawer and they will stay right
there, I felt very unsure of stopping with no fags in the flat at all,and in my
case this proved right. If they hadn't been there in the beginning I may well
have bought some. Carry on the good work, it gets easier the longer you stay off .,The Champix as I have said so many times are like a miracle in that they really worked when nothing before ever did.

Good luck xx

emmanana · 29/07/2011 18:36

Hi everyone.
I'm on day 2 of Champix, anyone else just started it?

shivster1980 · 30/07/2011 17:33

Hi emmanana,
I am on Day 8 of my quit using lozenges and inhalator infrequently.

This is the first stop smoking thread I have seen in a while on MN so I thought I would post here.

My Mum quit 2 years ago after 44 years as a 30+ a day smoker. She used Champix and found it fantastic Smile

emmanana · 30/07/2011 19:17

Wow! Well done to your mum! I also started a champix thread in chat yesterday, cause I thought more people look at chat, If you scroll down one or two pages in chat, you should find it.
8 Days, - the nicotine and everything should be out of your system by now? They do say you have more chance of quitting for good if you make it past a week.
I have been smoking for near on 30 years, and the longest I have gone without a ciggy is 24 hours; your Mum is one big inspiration!

emmanana · 30/07/2011 19:21

Here is the link for the other thread Shivster!

shivster1980 · 30/07/2011 21:19

My Mum smoked constantly - regularly lit one off the butt of another, smoked in the bath, the loo (yuck), etc etc.

She just decided she had had enough one day and that was it. As well as the champix she started saving her ciggie money in £2 coin bundles and used to bring piles of £2 to spend on my DS when she visited for the first 18 months or so. 3 years this January - not one slip. Grin

shivster1980 · 30/07/2011 21:21

She also drinks a lot less coffee now as coffee and smoking went together.

shivster1980 · 30/07/2011 21:24

I'm using NRT so not totally nicotine free but a lot less nicotine than before and without the nasty chemicals. I didn't smoke enough to get champix I don't think... I also have a history of depression which would count me out I think too.

Twosugarsplease · 30/07/2011 22:54

Just wanted to add, I'm another achiever ! They made me feel sick.....god when I think back, they made me feel terrible ! So much so that I decided to self diagnose, on the advise of my smoking nurse. I took one each morning, that was enough, I didn't need to take another at night, the nausea put me off wanting one,. In the last 4 weeks or so I took one every other day. Amazing pill ! Didn't think I would ever stop. The pill didn't make me feel funny, though I did feel sick, nicotine withdrawal was what made me feel worse.

Shakti · 01/08/2011 22:10

Hi folks

I went to GP today and have chamois ready to start tomorrow. I don't know if I am more scared of failing to quit or being a nonsmoker. It has been so much of my life for thirty years. Need to quit for lots of reasons, not least because i hate smelling of cigarettes. Good to read your stories. I hope i can have a good story to tell.

emmanana · 01/08/2011 22:31

Shakti, I have also smoked for 30 years, I'm on day 5 of the programme. I can already sense something happening. I fancy ciggies less and less. Come back to this thread, or the one on Chat, and share how you're getting on.
Be positive , good luck Smile

Shakti · 02/08/2011 09:20

Which thread to use???

Chat will disappear and I have feeling this will take more than a month!

emmanana · 02/08/2011 11:31

It won't disappear as long as people are still writing on the thread Smile
The Champix course is designed to be taken over 3 months. I heard of people who stopped taking the tablets after a few weeks and they relapsed top smoking. Apparently even if you feel like you won't smoke, you have to take the tabs for the whole course, though of course your GP or Nurse can give you proper qualified advice on that.

flyby10 · 22/08/2011 12:55

Bollocks.....sorry folks! But sooooo cross with myself!
I'm much further up the thread. I did 4 and a half months of not smoking...loved not smelling, hiding from kids etc etc. Had a load of stress about 3 weeks ago...and started again! I'm not smoking as much but am so disappointed with myself. My husband also fallen of the wagon...which is a nightmare because we just have to do it at the same time.
So...here we go again day 2 of champix! It does work all you newbies I promise - I can vouch for the sickness and headaches...ooo and vivid dreams. I also felt quite detached from my husband around week 3-5. I'm guessing that was missing the habit as well. I was absolutely focused on giving up it took over.
But...I'm on it....I doing it. I will be a non smoker!

You may hear more from me......

Shakti · 28/08/2011 10:28

Flyby. How is it going? I did two weeks not smoking then some fairly major stress appeared in my life last Wednesday and I bought some. Had a packet of ten, bought another! Have four left in that second lot but I am not going to smoke them today. I am so cross with myself.

Fly so glad you are trying again. It might not be quite as smooth as we hoped but we will do it!

Emma how are you doing?

Anyone with stories of success please post or post again! Think we could all do with them right now. Off to aibu now! Wish me a safe journey!!!!

ShirleyKnot · 28/08/2011 10:44

Ooooo.

This thread is calling to me.

Shakti · 28/08/2011 10:53

Spill the beans Shirley!

chopchopbusybusy · 28/08/2011 11:24

Just over five weeks of not smoking with the help of champix. I'd definitely recommend it. If I'm honest I wasn't that motivated to stop. Nagged by GP. Decided to give it a go anyway. I took it for a full two weeks before stopping completely. I had cut down a bit though. Didn't tell DH or DDs I was stopping because I wanted to be able to start again without them seeing me fail! Anyway, it definitely works. I had a packet with eight cigarettes left on my quit day. I kept it for a week or so just in case but threw them out - which I'm pleased I did because I had a few stressy days and I would have smoked them - had to be strong not to go to the shop.
I plan to take them for at least 12 weeks. Stop smoking nurse says she usually recommends 16 weeks just to be absolutely sure, so I'll see what I think when the time comes.
Despite lacking a bit of self motivation when I started I'm really pleased I've stopped and when I do have a bit of a craving I think of all the positives. Smell better, no bad breath, feel better, more money and best of all not always planning things around where and when I'll be able to have a cigarette break.
Good luck everyone Grin

ShirleyKnot · 28/08/2011 11:50

I think I'm going to give it a try.

Yes.

Shakti · 31/08/2011 13:15

Well Shirley, are you? Will you? !!!!!!

One day, 13 hours here. Bit strung out as I seem to need coffee to replace the ciggies but hey! Will keep on keeping on. I have asked GP for another two months of champix. How do people manage sleeping on champix? I only seem to sleep if I have a bottle of wine! Fine in the short term I guess but not for long.
