i'm a size 22 and weigh 14stone, and i dont have swollen ankles, am also only 5ft 2.

lovecloud · 13/10/2005 18:29

hello my mum had this problem a few months back, she is a large lasy size 24 clothes but carrie sit well and her legs from knees down have always been slim (her fav part of her body ) her ankles swelled right up, it looked so painfuland all the skin went dry and flakey, she went to hospital and they checked her over, they gave her tablets to get rid of the water rention which worked well at first but they were still swollen for a good few weeks, they checked her over and could not find any problems so because of her age they put it down to the menopause which she does not feel is the problem. my mum is in her 50's and still has reg periods that last a week.
they also said it could be stress related - another favourite
she sits for hours on the phone (runs business) with her legs crossed and does not exercise except front door to car so after cutting down and taking walks with the medicatiom they slowly went down. they are back to normal now.
i would go to your gp and get checked over, if they cant find a problem then you should try taking walks and when at home sit with your feet up on cushions or a chair, slightly higher than your pelvis to drain the fluid. Dont sit with them crossed or tucked under the chair.
if you develop a pain in the back of you calf or feel breathless i would got a&e to make sure if you not developed a blood clot.

Mum2OneAndBump · 13/10/2005 18:31

No i am sorry but i have to agree the docs DO NOT KNOW BEST, honestly i would really get another opinion or at least a blood test and see what the outcome is then.

noddyholder · 13/10/2005 18:32

You shouldn't really raise your legs up until you know its not your heart though Have you been ill at all recently like the last few weeks?

lovecloud · 13/10/2005 18:34

Call NHS direct 0856 46 47

they will talk you through lots of questions - i always find them great and more informative than my gp.

lovecloud · 13/10/2005 18:34

sorry 0845 46 47

have to agree with the others trace, gps don't always know best so please don't be fobbed off. Go and see another gp if you can and get a second opinion. Don't agree it's your weight either.

trace2 · 13/10/2005 19:35

yo've all been a great surport, but i would know if i was really ill would'nt i?

sorry for all this just so mixed up, my feet hurt like hell, and feel red hot.

nailpolish · 13/10/2005 19:36

it could be your circulation needs checked out?

trace, you really need to do something more about this. youve been worrying about it since 930 this morning

Ulysees · 13/10/2005 19:43

nhs direct - swollen ankles

puff · 13/10/2005 19:48

trace, I put on 8 stone in 4 years (since lost 6 of it) - my feet did not swell up like your seem to have.

If it were me, I'd go down to A&E - don't bother telling them about the gp appointment. I'm no doctor, but very surprised she/he doesn't think it warrants further investigation.

try pressing your finger tips into your legs, if they leave an indentation then they is a lot of fluid there.

noddyholder · 13/10/2005 20:01

agree go to a and e and say they have suddenly got worse they will investigate it I am not a doctor but don't think its weight gain fluid is not fat

trace2 · 13/10/2005 20:05

misdee yes it does, just talked to dh he says i need second opinion just fed up with gps says everything comes down to weight, talk about loseing confidance.

I've come across the odd gp who I wouldn't trust with my goldfish. They seemed to be on another planet!

LadySherlockofLGJ · 13/10/2005 20:13

Go to A&E.

I am too tired to post my story, but when I was in hospital the midwife told me I was fine,Wrong I ended up in intensive care and they took 4 count 'em 4 litres of fluid off my lungs.

Your situation does not sound as serious, but please go now to A&E.

Ulysees · 13/10/2005 20:19

u still there trace? think it's a resounding go to a&e or at least back to a gp.

trace2 · 13/10/2005 20:25
