here we are...

SR you are doing very well with the regime - thats great (and I;m sure a little treat or two on holiday won't be disastrous Smile

I am Envy of your trip to Spain, it will be a lovely break for you. Oh for a bit of sunshine!

I think your Dh may have caved in Grin what sort of paper have you chosen? DH usually leaves these choices up to me - but I will admit to one or two style disasters.

My uncle has phoned us and he and my aunt are safe and well. There has been damage to their house, but mostly external and repairable - no flooding, which they were fearing. So good news there Smile

My elderly mother was throwing food out for the birds yesterday and was blown over by the wind - she managed to scrape all the skin off her arm, and had to crawl back to the house because she couldn't stand up in the wind. I have told her very firmly to STAY INSIDE.

DH and I have been trying to tidy up the garden a bit, but it's got a bit wet and miserable now.

Hope everyone has been having a good weekend. Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/02/2011 17:59

thank goodness your uncle is safe KK - what great news-and that the house is repairable- a huge relief I'm sure.
Your poor mum being blown away almost- it certainly was very windy here.
Well done on more weight loss SR ! Spain will be lovely-I should just relax and enjoy the tapas Grin Wine
Nice supper at my parents last night for mum's birthday -cooked by dh- from Nigel's Tender - red peppers stuffed with pork & rosemary and I made lemon curd ice cream -all very yummy. Think mum had a really nice birthday which is good.

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 06/02/2011 18:00

perhaps Dh just realised you had chosen the nicest option SR !! We usually agree on things for the house fortunately.

OP posts:
sandripples · 06/02/2011 20:31

OOh yes I made lemon curd ice cream once and it was yummy!

Glad to hear about your uncle KK, but sorry about your mum. Thank goodness she's not any worse. My aunt got blown over by the wind in Edinburgh once, broke a hip and an elbow and sadly, she had to go a home after that as she lost confidence. I helped her to move months after the fall and after a few in's and out's from hospital before she decided on the home.

Fortunately the home was really good and she had several happy years there.

I hope the paper I've chosen isn't a style disaster - it is quite - um - bold - involving a design with tropical flowers and red parrots! Only for one wall I hasten to add. I was trying to find something I thought DH would like and that goes with our goldy yellow curtains. (Yes the red parrots are on a yellow background - OMG it sounds ghastly dpesn't it)

I have had the occasional disaster - like the paint in the hall I though would look terracotta but the family say make it look as though the house is on fire.....

smee · 06/02/2011 20:50

SR, DH and I never agree on house things either. It's taken us 2 years to agree where to hang a picture - I wouldn't mind, but we both like it - we even chose it together. Confused

It was me who's stood outside the cave hotel. Looked brilliant and you'll definitely have to take a break on the new eating regime - all that lovely tapas. Envy

Kurri, how awful for your mum. Made me think of The Wizard of Oz, though I realise that's a bit odd and am sure their house is far more firmly rooted. Good to hear your Uncle's got through the cyclone though. Must be a huge relief.

Sparkles, am hoping DS and the other little Sparkles are calm and sunny. If not Wine. Definitely earned I'd say after the week you'd had.

Limejelly, hope you'll be back soon and that you're not feeling too sore. Let us know when you can. Smile

We went to China Town today for New Year. Lots of dragons and fire crackers. DS has saved a box. Hmm

Did anyone else watch 'The Big C'? Not really about Cancer in lots of ways. Might just be me, but I laughed a lot.

MAS, your mum's birthday sounds lovely, but why did you have to mention Lemon Curd ice cream?! I not only want some, but am pretty sure I need it too.

KurriKurri · 06/02/2011 21:20

I've never had lemon curd ice cream but I definitely want some now. Your mum's birthday sounds lovely MAS - I'm glad she had a nice day.

SR - I love the sound of parrots on the wall paper - it will be fab. - it does not sound ghastly at all.

Also sending love to Sparkles - hope you managed a restful weekend.

And LJ, - hope everything went well and you aren't feeling to sore and knocked out by GA.

Smee - I've heard a lot of good reports about 'The Big C' - I hesitated about watching it, but on your recommendation I will catch up with it on iplayer Smile

Grin at Wizard of Oz - mum is very tiny - I can imagine her taking off like a kite. - She is a tough old girl though, - she doused her arm in hydrogen peroxide (ow ow ow - I'm so glad she no longer attends to my cuts and scrapes!) and has stuck a dressing on it. There was really no need for her to be out flinging bird food around, she's mad as a brush.

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/02/2011 21:46

your mum sounds wonderful KK !
Is the Big C the thing with Laura Linney in it ? i love her -she was Mary Ann Singleton in Tales of the City on tv years ago.
Ds saw me making the ice cream and would have happily eaten it if he hadn't seen that it contained plain yogurt -gah ! He hates milk/yogurt/cheese.
He has written out his options form and we can relax - final choice was Geog, history, music & Drama

OP posts:
Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 09:31

Morning all - hooray for KK's uncle and SR's weight loss (and wallpaper which sounds great), and for MAS's Mum's birthday.

Boo for tonsilitis, unlit firecrackers and assorted aches and pains.

I have had the most slothful and over indulgent weekend: back to the grindstone now. Sigh.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2011 10:18

do tell Cakes ! am off to do some work soonish...

OP posts:
smee · 07/02/2011 10:46

MAS yes, The Big C, is Laura Linney, who's obviously fantastic and was why I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't find it too cancer-grim. It's more about a woman re-taking control of her life, so doing things as she wants for a change. Mostly very funny and some of the things she says about cancer are quite astute, so it didn't jar for me.

Glad DS has finally got his options sorted. Sounds like a good mix to me. Smile

Cakes, I ate a whole box of maltesers last night. Some kind fool gave them to me. Does that out-sloth you?! Grin

Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 11:33

Doesn't outsloth me, no, I'm afraid.

We went to see my Mum who offered force fed me Fox's chocolate biscuits, and I also drank quite a bit of white wine, just because it was there. Apart from the treats I ate quite healthily which is just pointless really. I'm really quite cross with myself, especially as i teamed it all with a total lack of exercise. The only strong-minded thing I did in two days was refuse to bring the uneaten Fox's biscuits back home with me, and I think that may have only happened because I felt a bit sick at the time Blush

On your recommendation, then, smee - I'll give the Big C a go: I was avoiding it too.

SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 11:34

Cakes I am plodding my way through a box of jaffa cakes.....do I out-sloth you? Grin No....well I will redouble my efforts. Or maybe not, have lost 2 lbs I think, wooly brain, certainly feel a bit of me that my dh isn't married to has gone. Often tell him he never needs another woman as he married me and have just added to me since....definietly enough to be slim slip of a yound woman Grin

Thank you asking ds had an ok weekend, he got up early on Saturday (he got me up too) to write beautiful letters of apology to his friends. Am a bit of a playground leper at the moment...but this too will pass, or we will have found a different school so it won't matter. Amazing how quickly other parents forget that my ds has always been the kind gentle friend who always helps everyone, who younger and older children turn to for help, most know what he is going through, but we all know we live in an apathetic and unemotive society. Whilst I support every parent's right to be their child's advocate whilst I am being mine I always keep in my mind all the other children. My thought for the day.....they should have me on Radio two - definitely not high brow enough for Radio4! Grin

Hope everyone is ok on this windy windy day. Kurri bar the door to stop your mother going out, tell her the birds aren't even flying because it is so windy. I do hope her arm is much better today.

smee · 07/02/2011 11:42

Am feeling a bit responsible now for 'The Big C'. Hope you don't all think I've lost the plot. Confused

SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 11:50

Well if you have smee, you will find me looking for mine! Grin

SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 11:51

Cakes - finished the jaffa cakes Grin

Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 12:07

Excellent work sparkles! Grin

Bless your ds for writing little notes to everyone: says a lot about him, and the way you are bringing him up. Playground leprosy passes, and most of us get it from time to time. Don't worry [ wink]

KK I am still smiling at the thought of a little elderly lady being swept up by the wind - a lot different from the reality, I know. How horrid that she fell and hurt her arm: am just glad it wasn't worse. My Mum is a bit like that: just won't admit to getting older and frailer. It's a worry. My Mum still drives but just very, very slowly. How she doesn't have an accident (or someone get out of their car and thump her) I just don't know Grin

I bought a pair of trousers in (ahem) a 14 last week. I have never been a 14 before in my life (I am very short and slightly built so a 14 is seriously overweight). Angry But, because I like them a lot, and because hope springs eternal, I have also bought them in a 12. A girl can dream. But I'm also a realist so I haven't bought them in a 10, even though that is what I really need to be.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2011 12:17

sparkle - bugger those other mothers.. I think your ds sounds a real sweetie. Impressed by jaffa cake consumption.
Am sure my ma would blow away and my MIL who is minute like a bird would certainly.
Am feeling out of sorts as Celeste has driven me quite mad being into everything including my work. Also ds left crossly (because I was nagging him) and am coming to the end of the first book- the last drawings are always a trial.
Am hoping ds won't forget to go to his choir rehearsal as they're starting the NY work - am sure he won't.
Taking dad to hospital tomorrow for his cataract pre-op thing. They have to measure his eyes, apparently.

OP posts:
Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 12:19

Will he have to stay in or is cataracts a day thing these days?

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2011 12:34

it's over very quickly- so next week I wait for him to be done and take him home ! amazing ! think hge is a little nervous. He took me in for my op so it's my turn to return the favour Grin

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 07/02/2011 12:41

Mmm - jaffa cakes - I love them (you can get them with cherry flavoured jelly now - bit odd but quite nice Grin)

Your DS sounds very sweet Sparkle and well done to him for writing his apology notes - how horrid you feel like a playground leper - anyone who treats you like that is not worth bothering about.

I'm glad DS got his options sorted MAS - you can stop stressing about it now Smile I hope your Dad's op. goes well. My late MIL had her cataracts done a good few years ago, and she was home that day, and could see so much better afterwards.

Don't worry about laughing about Dorothy my mum Cakes - she was laughing herself when she told me! She is used to knocks - she used to ride a small motor bike well into her sixties - used to collect me from school on it sometimes - much to the amusement of my friends. - Completely barking, but I adore her.

I have to say I am (I think) about the same height and build as you Cakes and am currently cramming myself into wearing a size fourteen. I look particularly odd because on top you would think I was quite normal if you saw me, my weight is all on my bum and legs, - oh and belly too.

I wish I didn't feel so hungry all the time Sad I ought to be a ten too (I used to be an eight in my yoof - oh well - never mind)

Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 12:42

I hope he is knocked out, although it doesn't sound like it. The thought of surgery on the eyes whilst awake is a bit buttock-clenching...

Sorry that probably isn't what you need to hear, is it?

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2011 12:44

he'll be awake !! but a friend of his has reassured him that it's all ok and he will be so happy to have good vision afterwards

OP posts:
Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 12:45

K - your shape sounds a lot like mine. The top bit is quite normal but some unkind person has taken a bicycle pump and inflated my whole lower half. I'm sure I don't know what I've done to deserve it Hmm

I love the idea of your Mum on a little motorbike Grin

I think a bit of character stands people in good stead for their old age....

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2011 12:45

I do keep thinking of Le Chien Andalou though

OP posts:
Cakesandale · 07/02/2011 12:46

Yikes!!!!! It will be worth it though. I am such a coward about all things eye related.
