here we are...

And long may it continue!!

(Excellent news about the dream as well) [bgrin]

philmassive · 25/01/2011 11:05

Hi all, thanks for your kind thoughts. I will continue to be part of the gang, if that's alright, now I've found you! Had my celebratory treat yesterday lunch time when we took DS to the local carvery - just so nice to be with him without the black cloud over my head. That was treat enough! Nurse did say to try to lose some weight, cut out the red wine (didn't mention white Grin) and chocolate apparently can all help with breast pain. Not much to ask really, although the chocolate will be a challenge!

Any news on how Sparkle has got on?

KK - just had a thought whilst brushing my teeth this morning. Have you thought to contact the Imperial War Museum about your Dad? I know at one point they were collecting the 'oral history' of war - recording people's memories and so on. They have some absolutely fantastic recordings of First World War veterans, obviously priceless now. Was thinking that your Dad's info is so interesting and backed up with the documents and diaries you have, I bet they would love to talk to him if he was willing to open up to them.

Pennies - hello! Let us know when you're on the telly. I can't wait to be able to smugly say that I know you to dh and make him go Hmm!

Lime - hope you're feeling a bit better and recovering well. Smile

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 11:29

That's a good idea, phil! It will be such a shame when that generation fades away, especially if their memories aren't recorded so they can be honoured into the future.

I bet you had a fab lunch yesterday: what a shame about the wine and chocolate though. If you are trying to lose weight you will be just like most of the rest of us on here (I believe Pennies and MAS may be more sylphlike), and we can egg each other on. it is such a bore though. I went swimming on Sunday with dd (we ended up playing a sort of pool volleyball which is most unlike me) and by myself last night. I have also made myself give up drinking anything in the week (though I have a fair bit at the weekend owing to quite a jolly social scene locally and my new-found relish for company) - but not an ounce has shifted from my bum yet. Sigh. Do you remember Kenny Everett in his Rod Stewart get-up? That's what my bum looks like.

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 12:11

Cakes - thanks for that bum image! Ewww. And at lunchtime too!

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2011 12:18

oh but red wine is so yum and good for you,as is chocolate.
If it's any help I'm giving up chocolate in all forms for Lent (8th March) and perhaps we could do a tamoxifen thread version? encouragement always helps ! The year after lalaa was diagnosed and it looked as though she was going to have to pay for herceptin I did this and people sponsored me -I raised nearly £200 from very generous friends and as she was given the herceptin in the end I donated the money to the breast unit at her hospital in Bath for refurbishing the quiet room. I always give up choc anyway for Lent- part of my lapsed Catholicism unlapsing-I tried crisps one year but that's not the same.
I couldn't do choc and wine or choc and coffee, though for an extra challenge I could attempt choc and coffee !!

I'm happy to go for choc for Lent! I may need to start sooner though

Not today though, as I've already had 4 Bourbon biscuits

KurriKurri · 25/01/2011 12:57

I'll do choc for lent - I need some sort of motivation, my get up and go has got up and gone since Christmas. I am also very large of bottom, I haven't really put on any weight on my top half just bum and tum (oh and legs too) so I look extremely pear shaped.

I am really struggling to do anything at the moment. One of my friends had an op. the same time as me and she says she's feeling the same, so we are going swimming tomorrow - to get back into good habits.

I have a sneaky suspicion that our Pennies is going to be the star of the show Grin - can't wait to see it. And it sounds a good laugh Pennies - but I agree with the others you are very brave to do it Smile

Phil IWM is a good idea- unfortunately my Dad has alzheimers so he's not really able to recall much now, - which is such a shame. But I will definitely sort through all the diaries and letters to make a record for the family at least. And once they are sorted I will get in touch with the IWM if the rest of the clan agree Smile

I hope Sparkles is recovering after her op. and will be home soon Smile

No luck with DD's coat I've rung round all the lost prop. offices and it's not there. She can't afford a new one so her friend is lending her one for the winter!

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:04

These days it is always a surprise when lost stuff actually gets handed in Sad. I hope the one she is borrowing is super trendy and warm (and clean)

A few years ago I left all my Xmas cards where I had been writing them on the train. They weren't handed in so I wrote a whole new set - everyone I know got 2 so some kind soul posted them for me! Shock

Pennies · 25/01/2011 13:04

I'll do choc for lent too! I was considering going the whoe hog and cutting out sugar but I reckon my body would go into serious DTs if I did.

KK - the Imperial War Museum idea is a good one - you could just go to Duxford, just outside Cambridge. I went there last week with my brother and it's fascinating (although Concorde was a bit of a let down).

On an aside, how much alcohol do you each generally drink a week? I've been told to only enjoy it on high days and holidays and whilst I've cut down by about half I still am drink far more regularly than that. I reckon I have about a bottle of wine a week which isn't really very good is it?

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:06

Really, that should have been [bshock] - it's so much nicer, I reckon it's the black mouth as well as the hat that makes the difference

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:09

Pennies - from a purely subjective point of view I'd say that was excellent [bblush] I drink more than I should -and it's quite a bit more than that, although I too am working on it. can't imagine I'll get down to a bottle a week, though it is an ambition.

KurriKurri · 25/01/2011 13:23

I don't drink huge amounts, we have a bottle of wine at the weekends and DH drinks a bit more of it than me. But we don't drink everyday, I'll always accept wine if it's offered Grin, and we have a drink if we go out to the theatre or for lunch etc.

I don't drink any spirits, I have the odd Guinness, cider or lager if I see it on offer at the supermarket.

philmassive · 25/01/2011 13:34

I never give anything up for lent but it's a fab idea to give up chocolate under the circumstances. I live in the hope that I may lose the taste for it Grin so I'll go with that one (though will have to chekc when lent actually starts)

As for drinking I probably have about 3 glasses of wine a week, but they are bigger than a pub measure I would have thought. DH is a terrible guzzler so I have to get in there quick or else it's all gone, which is good for me but less so for him Confused

How are you all getting your Scottish smileys?

Cakes - Everett bum just made me laugh.

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:35

Blimey I am a lush [bblush]

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:37

Phil - scroll down to below the list of usual smilies, they are all there, But generally just use a b before the usual text you type in your brackets

philmassive · 25/01/2011 13:40

Ah feeling a bit [bblush] as you all now know I'm too lazy and daft to have scrolled down a centimetre!

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 13:54

[bgrin]

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 13:58

Pennies - may I ask who told you to cut down on wine and why? I reckon I drink about 1-2 bottles a week, and that seems to be pretty normal, even low compared to some friends.

It's weird all this talking today about wine, choc, fat bums and exercise...
(D)H came into the kitchen last night and announced that he'd heard/read that very day that 'they' had found that BC is definitely 'caused by': lack of exercise, alcohol, and being overweight. Yes I know I am 'guilty' of all 3 [bangry]. He's lucky that his lack of tact didn't 'cause' him sudden pain in the groin area!

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 14:03

Sorry ladies, I wasn't going to repeat what he said, twas just the turn of the conversation reminded me and made me cross again....idiot (me and him)

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 14:06

Blimey LJ he picks his time, doesn't he? [bgrin]

I heard something along these lines as well so I think there has been some new research published. Being overweight definitely is not good if you have had (or want to avoid) hormone receptive BC as oestrogen is stored in fat. As regards alcohol I have heard mixed reports. Certainly my team didn't seem terribly interested in anything alcohol related although they were quite hot on fruit and veg consumption, weight loss and exercise.

But I have to say your consumption does not seem out of control to me, and takes you to about the govt guidelines (thuogh we all know that they are a bit arbitrary). But i imagine it is a good idea for your health to keep alcohol consumption low - just not sure how low that would have to be. Here's hoping someone who doesn't bury their head in the sand can enlighten me.

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 14:24

Hmm yes my cancer has turned out to be hormone receptive and think I have had rather 'active' hormone history (short cycle and several MCs) so the fact of being definitely overweight in last few years (will only admit to having been voluptuous before then!) could well be something I may have to put more effort into tackling then.

Shouldn't the Tamoxifen take care of the hormones so we don't have to worry tho? [bgrin] (buries head in sand with Cakes)

To be fair, we did use to drink a lot more than we do now, ie before children.

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 14:29

And if I've got so much oestrogen sloshing around in my fat why are my memory and concentration so crap? They are connected, no?

Cakesandale · 25/01/2011 14:32

These are all mysteries that I, too, would like explained [bgrin]

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2011 14:35

I can never resist chocolate, except at Lent ! I love sweeties,so can't give those up... I'd hate to have to give up wine- on a typical week we share a bottle of cider (ie one glass each) on a weekday and at weekends generally 1 bottle of wine between us,though I probably have a bit more than the half as dh will often have some beer. If we go to see mum and dad for a drink we usually have a glass or two of wine with them,or sometimes one of dad's g&ts or a dry martini -he mixes a very strong, icy cold one in his cocktail shaker- irresistible !

LimeJellyforBrains · 25/01/2011 14:45

Ooh a lovely G&T - haven't had one for ages - it's what I often order pre-meal at restaurants....mmm
