Went back to the gym after 8 weeks plus off for summer hols, did a step class and it nearly killed me. I'm aiming for the 3 times a week minimum because I must get fit again. Does anybody wnat to join me on this thread for mutual support and encouragement?

£99 for a year seems v good value. Does it have a creche. If mine didn't I would never go, it's bad enough dragging myself out in the evening during the school hols. I couldn't do it all the time.

Don't be embarressed, I have found that the people at the gym are really helpful and encouraging. They will be impressed that you are working out.

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 13:15

No, there is no creche, it doesn't matter really in my case though as i can go after i've dropped dd2 at nursery and still be back in time to collect her at 11.30

puff · 29/12/2005 13:22

MrsBubs - go for it! That is a very good deal.

When I joined the gym I am with I was pleasantly surprised - full of all shapes, sizes and ages. Very unlike the last time I belonged to a gym (about 10 years ago) and everyone looked v toned and honed.

The first couple of weeks are a bit tough going when you haven't exercised regularly for a while, but it doesn't take long for your stamina to build up.

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 13:31

it's just that if I go and get laughed at i know that I won't go again and the money will be wasted, I am sneaking behind dh's back as it is by paying for it, he thinks joining a gym is a waste of time, he has never even set foot in one, even though I am severely overweight I have never been without a gym membership in over 15 years.

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 13:32

I need to lose at least 10st and keep wondering whether i will ever do and if I am fighting a losing battle

puff · 29/12/2005 13:48

MrsBubs - you can do it (you probably know I've lost 7 stone so far).

I understand how you feel, I really do. I put on 8 stone and knew I had to tackle it, but it felt like such a mountain to climb I kept avoiding the issue. But once I decided I was going to attack the problem I found the best approach was to think of the weight 7lbs at a time.

Have you had a visit to the gym and had a look around? When I did this and saw the range of people I felt very at home. Choose a time when it is busy and get the feel of the place - you'll soon know if it feels right for you.

Passionflower · 29/12/2005 15:34

All shapes and sizes at the gym I go to as well. They even have free classes on prescription and lots for OAPs. Lots of gyms are very inclusive these days. I think you should go for it. My DH was less than supportive at first but he's had a talking to from our friends and he can see how much happier I am so he's come round to it.

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 15:48

No puff I didn't know you had lost 7 stone, that is fantastic. I have been into town and joined the gym as the offer ended tomorrow. I have my induction on 4th jan.

puff · 29/12/2005 15:50

Good for you .

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 16:09

Which diet are you following puff? Also, how much more are you wanting to lose (if you don't me asking. I have also bought the new Gillian McKeith - The Ultimate Plan, although I don't like most of the recipes she suggest I do like some of the principles she encourages.

puff · 29/12/2005 16:36

GI Diet.

I'd like to lose another 2 stone and get into a size 10 - it may be too much though, so I'd be happy with a stone.

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 16:38

How long has it taken you.

puff · 29/12/2005 16:39

18 months, so it's been steady. The diet has really worked for me.

Have to dash to the docs now but back later on.

Passionflower · 29/12/2005 16:50

Well done MrsBubs

MrsBubsDeVere · 29/12/2005 18:22

thanks passion flower, just bought myself some jogging bottoms and t-shirts and a new sports bag, feel bad about going behind dh's back, but needs must

Passionflower · 30/12/2005 12:08

Good for you, well done. FWIW I don't think your DH has cause for complaint unless you dont go and the money is wasted. It's your body and you can exercise it however you want to.

He'll come round when he sees how much happier you are.

joanna4 · 30/12/2005 13:05

I joined virgin gym with my hubby yesterday to think how we only went to get some shower creme from the shop!
Anyway bottom line is we used to go to gym about 5 years ago then we just gave up cos we always had an excuse ready or money was tight.
Anyway we went last night to get a feel for it and we both came away mad keen.I like the way they have kids clubs with exercise for them plus 3 pools we can all swim together in as a family.
So can i join the thread please.

puff · 30/12/2005 13:34

Hi Joanna - shall we start a brand new thread as this is getting long?

joanna4 · 30/12/2005 14:08

Might be an idea.

Passionflower · 30/12/2005 16:52

joanna4 · 07/01/2006 18:34
