Pain on ovary?

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 10:12

I have had pain during sex for the last week, it is a stabbing pain on the right, possibly on my ovary? I have had ovarian cysts before (in fact quite a biggy) but I don't remember it hurting like this. No pain other than during sex-can't really have sex as the pain in that spot is too much when it happens.

I will get to the doctor next week but any ideas? I am worried and google didn't show much.

Any chance you could be pregnant, however slim?

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 10:19

Should have said that, sorry - did a pg test this morning as had a similar thing when pg with DD. It was negative. I am on the mini pill but have been taking it correctly so shouldnt be but I will test again in a week.

I was just wondering about this! I have the same-pain on the lower right side. (Not during sex though, just occasionally, especially at night.) I went in to get it checked and it is apparently not my ovary, though what it is remains uncertain. Let me know what you find out!

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 10:35

Oh dear yes I will. When I had a cyst before it was only picked up because I had a kidney scan due to recurrant infections, no pain so Iam not sure its my ovary either. Maybe they can cause pain though?

It certainly feels like the pain is where my ovary is but hard to know as the pain is so big if that makes sense, in that it affects the whole right side when it happens. Yuck, no fun anyway, hope you get yours sorted too and I will report back.

Have had a few pelvic infetions this year but the pain was everywhere not just on the right so am guessing this is different?

mousymouse · 10/10/2010 10:40

I usually have a pain from what I would guess is ovary or womb area. turned out is was fibroids that are causing it.

DameGladys · 10/10/2010 10:45

Since you've had ovarian cysts before, it does seem that most likely explanation is something along those lines.

But do mention ectopic pregnancy to the GP - and watch out for pain getting worse or more continuous. And test again, maybe in a few days rather than a week.

Pelvic infections can affect the tubes and make ep more likely (I think).

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 10:52

Thank you yes I will ask the GP to have a look I think (not sure if I would have to go for a scan again to see if ts a cyst?)

Will keep testing. Would be surprised as been really careful but I know these things happen.

Will look up fibroids. The pelvic infections were after having a coil fitted , since it has come out I have been ok (touch wood) but yes a bit of a worry. I think the mini pill can give you functional cysts which is what I had before so hope they don't say I can't have the mini pill.

DameGladys · 10/10/2010 10:57

I tried the mini pill after DC2 but started bleeding on and off all the time. Went to the GP after a while and he said 'of course you know that means it's probably not working properly as a contraceptive - but another child wouldn't be a disaster would it?'

Shock as I sat trying to pacify my two children under 2.

I came off it sharpish.

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 11:17

Oh no DG scary!Contraceptives all seem to be a nightmare, its like weighing off one set of side effects against another.

I haven't had any bleeding on this pill (micronor) and had been vile on my last pill, moody, feeling fat, overly critical of my boyfriend interspersed with periods of neediness!

So really hoping to stay on this one but previous contraceptive experience tells me it is rarely that simple.

OP posts:
used2bthin · 10/10/2010 20:53

I have had bloating recently and sometimes can't wee fully till Ihave moved positions. Nothing like a bit of sunday night hypachondria. Actually it is making a change from worrying about DD!

On the contraception front, the coil gave me such heavy bleeding that I now have iron deficiency. So hope this mini pill will wor out!

Hope you get an appointment tomorrow.

Sounds a lot like something there, eg cyst/fibroids.

Hope you get it sorted asap.

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 22:13

Thanks DameGladys, will ring them tomorrow and try and get a female doctor.

Deep pain during sex can be indicative of endometriosis being present. An ultrasound scan will not detect endo if it is there; it is usually diagnosed through a laparoscopy which is a keyhole surgery type op.

You should be referred to a gynae for further evaluation; this type of issue is outside a GPs remit.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers; do not be fobbed off!!.

used2bthin · 10/10/2010 22:58

Thank5 you Attilathemeerkat, I have had all sorts of odd things with my preiods thinking about it-the kind of things that I keep thinking i will mention to the GP at some point then forget. I may be due on soon so if it is a cyst it may go I thought? Will defo get to the doctor this week though and will be persistant as it s actually preventing me having sex iyswim, rather than just an every now and then thing.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/10/2010 09:06

Do mention all the symptoms you've had but do not be overtly surprised if endo is not mentioned as a possible cause. Some GPs are woefully ignorant when it comes to endo and don't even consider it as a possible cause.

I feel you should be referred to a gynae for further evaluation anyway as this is now impacting on your day to day life.

used2bthin · 11/10/2010 09:36

Thanks for the warning Attila- I have just booked an appointment but the soonest I could get an appointment was friday and it iswith a doctor who I don't really like. Se was very annoying when I took DD in after her surgery because she had an ear infection (ie nothing to do with the surgery she had had) and just kept going on about DD shouldn't be in trousers after her op she should be in a skirt with bare egs (it was november!)then said DDdoesn't look too bad but that MUMMYlooks awfu whats wrong (er my DD had just had surgery then got ill as soon as we were home)grr sorry for the rant but not hopeful of her helping me.

he next appointment with a decent doctor is end of the month and I think thats probably too long. I am wondering whether should go to the GU clinic even though I am certain it is not an STD-they may have more expertise in that area anyway and I could go thurs while DD at playgroup.

marriednotdead · 11/10/2010 09:49

To back Attila, my endo was only evident by the stabbing pain when having sex, no real other symptoms so had to fight for years to be taken seriously.
Insist on referral to gynae.

used2bthin · 11/10/2010 09:59

It is an awful pain, and have had bizarrely heavy periods occasionally over the last few years which I have thought mst see a GP then forgotten about when the next one was normal. Oh dear well I wil try another GP if she isn't helpful or the GU clinic?

Did you get a diagnosis as soon as you were referred to gynae?

OP posts:
AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/10/2010 10:35

I received an endo diagnosis after having a type of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery whereby the endo was removed by laser. I had waited many years (over a decade actually to receive such a dx). It can also cause heavy periods to arise (fibroids can also cause heavy bleeding but the pain you write of suggests endo to me).

I had many of the symptoms associated with endo; cyclical symptoms like pelvic pain, rectal pain, clots, heavy brown/old blood bleeding (brown blood is also symptomatic), pains down legs. Pain in the run up to mentruation and during menses itself was intense.

GU clinic may not be of much help; you need a gynae referral and the best person to do that will be the GP. Insist on being referred and do not take no for an answer!.
As mentioned already you will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

Do keep us updated.

used2bthin · 11/10/2010 10:46

Thankyou, sounds like you have had a rough time of it. I rang the GU cinic and they said the same as you so will go to the GP and see what she has to say. I really want my sex life back!

OP posts:
marriednotdead · 11/10/2010 20:55

Attila, you story sounds very similar to mine, but had my first laparoscopy over 20 years ago. It always seems to take forever to get a diagnosis sadly. They found nothing conclusive back then and left me feeling like a hypochondriac until I begged for another one last year and they finally found it.

Usedtobethin, I hope you get this sorted, although in a way I want it to not be endo for you. The treatment cannot always be successful by it's very nature, and I'm waiting for more Sad. DH has discovered frustration levels patience he never knew he had Smile

used2bthin · 12/10/2010 17:12

Thank you marriednotdead, me too and sorry to hear of the struggle you have had with it.

Lots of cramping today and also a bit of tummy trouble so either its related or its just my period taking a while to get here (and making a big fuss while its at it!)

OP posts:
marriednotdead · 13/10/2010 08:07

It's quite common to acquire IBS with it too Sad
I guess because everything is so close together. I am living a lacto, yeast and bean free life these days, and it works most of the time.

Good luck with your GP.

thisiswhataluv · 13/10/2010 08:21

usedtobethin this is juat what im going through atm, pain is there constant though, but sex made it worse,im convnced i have a cyst or ovary problems and also cant get appointment untill friday Sad

used2bthin · 13/10/2010 13:24

thisiswhataluv poor you, well we will have to both report back friday and see what happens. I am going to try again tonight (sex) I think and see but its very off putting when you know it will hurt!

I wondered about the tummy trouble being related marriednotdead then remembered the lentil dip ate most of the day before Blush I do often get that just before my period too. Did a pg test today as am officially due on so thought it would show up by now (did an early response one). It was negative so absolutely not that which is something of a relief.
