DH has just gone in for emergency surgery suspected appendicitis. I am stuck at home with kids and didn't get a chance to ask how long surgery would take and how long he would be in hospital ( I didn't want the kids to see DH being wheeled down to theatre so made a hasty exit.
He's all woried about work and was busy telling me who to phone and what to oragainise.
I'm starting to bubble now I need some reassuring advice.

Skribble · 09/09/2005 22:10

Thanks havn't had a chance to think about it until now, he said he would drop in to A&E on the way home from work and I kept saying it was constipation or his IBS again .

Erm a friend had this years and years ago, whilst we were in france on hols! can't remember how long she was in surgery for, but they kept her in hospital for a further 3 weeks afterwards, huge pain for her family as they had to be tracked down (as on hols elsewhere in the world) and then had to fork out of their own expenses to come and get her! (was a school trip)

my dh went to surgery for his appendix at about 11pm and the surgeon rang me about 1am to tell me everything went fine. It not the op that takes the time it is the anaesthetic and the recovery that also takes time. I would think if it is uncomplicated then he will be up and out of bed tomorrow and home on Monday. Don't hang about these days. HTH.

Skribble · 09/09/2005 22:14

3 weeks I was hoping for 5/6 days. I think they got it quite early so perhaps not quite as long.

BTW, am a nurse too, so professional and personal advice there.

Skribble · 09/09/2005 22:16

Thanks blondehelen, I will wait until midnight then I will phone. I wish I had been able to speak to the nurs but I just thought the sight of daddy getting wheeled past might have been too much as it is they are not to bothered.

I'm sure he wont be in hospital for more than a few days, surgery will only be about 1.5 hours. Hope all is OK, keep us posted. Try not to worry toooooo much. hugs to you

CountessDracula · 09/09/2005 23:02

skribble hope he is fine, bet he will be up and about before you know it

spacecadet · 09/09/2005 23:04

hi skribble, try not to worry, its a very straightforward op,and shouldnt require any more than a couple of days in hospital, if he has the op tonight, he will be up and about tomorrow.i worked on a busy surgical ward and saw lots of appendicitis cases.

robinia · 09/09/2005 23:39

My dh had the same a couple of years back. Operation was an hour or so (but did keep getting delayed - was originally due in the morning and was finally done at 11pm). Discharged himself about three days later and was off work for a couple of weeks.

I had mine out too - albeit almost 30 years ago!!!! Seems like not much has changed though in terms of length of procedure and recovery time. I was in hospital for about a week and off school for two weeks after to recover!
That makes me sound ancient - lol - I was only six at the time, but remember it well!

jampots · 10/09/2005 01:16

thats good to hear skribble

just out of interest, would an appendicitis patient be allowed to fly less than 2 weeks following hte op? (asking for my sis)

bobbybob · 10/09/2005 04:13

I had mine out 10 years ago - I think 3 days in hospital (but I had the operation at midnight, so that was one night gone)

I was back at work in 4 weeks but only because:

I went to work on the train and dh took me to the station. I had only just started the job and had no sick leave to speak of. They recommended 6 and that was for a retail job.

I was sicker because by the time they took the damn thing out it had burst.

Skribble · 10/09/2005 23:26

Thanks everyone, I saw him this morning and he is fine. Home in a couple of days .

Glad he's ok Skribble. My dh had this 3 yrs ago (just as we were going on holiday). He was out in I think around 3/4 days I think, but wasn't allowed to drive for a couple of weeks iirc or lift anything (including the children).
