When does a cough along with a cold become a chest infection? Been ill for last week weeks with coldy, throat, cough thing. Rest it going but coughs worse, coughing up lots of crap, really tired, sire head from coughing and chest sore a bit too.

Any point taking cough medicine? I never usually bother with it.

is the stuff you are coughing up a greeny colour? sorry i know its tmi.

if you get a cough medicine you need an expectorant but it depends if you are on other medication

topsi · 08/10/2010 07:05

Sounds like a chest infection, I would go to the GP

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 06:31

I have similar and it is gradually going.

I had the same much worse in August and went to GP. He said that my body was doing what it should. Coughing is a form of defence and by coughing and coughing stuff up my body was getting rid of what it should. He didn't give me an antibiotic. I have asthma so he gave me steroids which helped the coughing a bit.

An expectorant does help loosen the mucus whcih makes coughing it up easier so try and get one of those.

I found that the coughing was keeping me awake at night and that was the worst part. I know that codeine stops coughing so I got some purely to take at night so that I got some sleep. Happy to cough all day and get rid of the shit but I need my sleep! Drink lots of fluids. Take Vit c. And suck on cough lozenges - they do soothe the throat.

I had it in August too, didnt' seem to linger on as much. I am constantly ill, manly with throat things kind of want to discuss that with GP too. Maybe I could sit and cough green crap all over them until they agree to remove my tonsils? Envy

If your phlegm is clear then it's just a cough but if it's coloured (yellow/green/brown) then there is a high chance of an infection

Also a bad temper/grouchiness can be a sign alongside a temperature and or extreme tiredness

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 13:15

Yup yellowy/greeney and have temp and headache.

Doctor then please.......tomorrow if possible or do you have a walk-in?

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 13:24

Dont have walk in, have nhs24 (bit like nhs direct) you phone then they tell you if you can go to see a dr or not.

How long have you been coughing green?

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 13:48

a while, some times brown streaks too mainly morning though

KatyMac · 10/10/2010 13:50

I think I'd go & see someone today - see what your NHS24 say tall them the colour & how long it's been

Make sure you are moving about a bit - although you might feel like going to bed it's not ideal

GabbyLoggon · 10/10/2010 13:51

yes we have had what you describe for a month
see gp phlegm colour is vital

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 13:54

Great I may be being over cautious, but I think better safe than sorry

BudaisintheZONE · 10/10/2010 15:33

Sounds worse than mine. I didn't have brown streaks. Hope you are ok.

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 17:53

Just back from hosp, heart rate very fast (150) and can hear wheeze in chest. Got antibiotics. If get worse palpatations have to go stright to a&e. And in a few weeks if not gone then to go to GP for asthma test. Thanks for advice.

Chest really sore just now, much worse today than yesterday. Going to chill on sofa and tv and MN I think. :)

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 18:10

KatyMac · 10/10/2010 19:12

That's good - it should shift it

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 10/10/2010 22:58

Thanks, Pain is worse in chest now, really sore at bottom of bra when cough - maybe thats rib pain? And top of chest still sore.

Fab news about dd. On way back from hosp I was behind a land rover with reg k50mac and I thought of you - is that really sad?!

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/10/2010 07:44

Sorry you are feeling worse - can you get some steam?

If I didn't disapprove of personalised number plates I'd want that one - DH keeps trying to persuade me to have something t hat combines mine, his & DD's initials

giraffesCantDookForApples · 11/10/2010 21:24

Ended up in hosp today. just home, feel crapola. :(

KatyMac · 11/10/2010 21:31

Poor you - you really didn't sound good yesterday - are you better at all?
