General election 2024

Middle class biological women prepare to be relegated to being second class citizens by the end of the week

Mycatsmudge · 01/07/2024 09:38

The Labour Party is expected to win a huge majority in the GE on Thursday. My fears are their stance on trans rights which are being prioritised over those of biological women and this will risk our safety, opportunities and dignity. I also work in the NHS and read what is happening to the nurses in Darlington with horror.

My other concern is they have not been transparent on their plans on how to raise money for their spending pledges other than say they will invest and reap the benefit of green technology. This is not going to happen in the foreseeable future. I can only conclude we will be taxed even more but stealthy.

Then I read this in their manifesto:
‘Expansion of the Equality Act 2010Labour will implement the socioeconomic protected characteristic of the Equality Act, also the socioeconomic duty under Section 1 of the Equality Act and ensure equality impact assessments of government policy are conducted.5 Jun 2024’
To me this means richer areas will get less money from government for public services than poorer areas. I live in an area which is very boringly middle class but our public services are already cut to the bone(bin collections fortnightly, potholes left for months, all adult evening classes gone) but we still pay a hefty amount of council tax.

So under a Labour government I as a biological woman, working in the NHS on the frontline and will be expected to share our women’s changing rooms with any man with a GRC. I will probably be taxed more as a higher rate taxpayer because the tax bands have stayed static for years and I will expect less public services because I live in the suburbs but my council taxes will most likely increase just to sustain what we already have

Legally, as it stands, some women do have penises. It's a fact. That's why he said it.

Legally Rwanda is a safe country for asylum seekers, but passing a law to say some bullshit doesn't make it true, and if someone asked me for a list of safe countries I wouldn't volunteer Rwanda.

I have been to Rwanda, and I did feel very safe and it was far more westernised than I imagined too! It is not this horrible place at all. It was very friendly and we felt extremely welcome.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/07/2024 09:49

It does mean that legally you change sex.

If that was the case it wouldn't be possible to use any exceptions at all.

Repeal is where we need to go in the long term, I'm not claiming the Tories were advocating that.

NewGirlinClass · 02/07/2024 09:50

Yes OP a bad time to want to be an independent woman. Whilst it is true that a lot of the policies over the last 14 years have damaged us along with other members of the family. The ProTrans/Anti Biological women policies of Labour and the Libdems seems extra spiteful and targetted only at us.

That’s ok then. Hummingbird says it’s safe. No doubt she would feel safe in Russia too.

gamerchick · 02/07/2024 09:53

Lol you put the trans thing first but really, you're worried more about how much less you're going to have.

2 weekly bin collections have been normal in large parts of the country for years. Learn to make less rubbish and recycle more. Our binmen have been striking on and off since Christmas. If you can't handle fortnightly bin collections you'll likely implode at that. Pot holes everywhere are being left.

To me this means richer areas will get less money from government for public services than poorer areas.

This, is literally you looking in your neighbours bowl to make sure they don't have more than you. God forbid poorer areas get a look in.

@MissScarletInTheBallroom

It should not be a binary choice between the fucking Tories and people who don't accept that women have the right to exist.

Can you provide a link to a statement from Labour regarding the above? It's news to me, and I'm find it a bit alarming, given I'm a woman and all.

It's really quite simple.

If you believe that a man has the right to become a woman, and in order for him to become a woman you have to redefine a woman as whatever it is that man believes he is feeling in his head, you no longer have a word for female people and therefore female people no longer exist as a recognised category in law and policy.

Labour believe "women" is a mixed sex category and don't seem to agree that we need words for single sex groups, let alone spaces for them.

You are deluded if you think Labour will even dent this statistic. There is far more to it than simply numbers on a sheet. We would need a whole sale culture change, for the courts to completely change the way hearings are held etc etc. The biggest hurdle is for the shame and stigma to be removed. Starmer just uses it as something to wave at women, knowing full well nothing will change. He does not care about women at all.

I'm not the deluded one, who else is talking about these issues? They are changing how it is investigated using tactics currently used for organised crime and terrorism. More specialized people within the force who are experienced with the crime and how to support the victims. Tackling the misognyist propaganda being fed to our youth from the likes of Andrew Tate.

Stigma and shame are not the only hurdles though i do agree they are big ones. But that won't change unless we vote for it. Labour doesn't want to allow the massive delays in the process meaning many victims drop out. He has proven in his career to care about women

Tell me, who are you voting for that is tackling the culture change? Removing the stigma and shame? Please enlighten me.

No one is offering to change the wholesale culture of the country as far as I can see. I will be voting for the only party that recognises I am a woman and my rights matter.

There is only one party that recognises women, and that is the conservatives. Which is a shameful indictment of the perilous state of our politics.

How have we got to the stage where most of the parties refuse to support women's rights?

I am astonished that anyone would vote to have their own human rights reduced, diminished or taken away altogether.

Vote as you want. But accept that the UK will deteriorate even further. We’ll be taken out of the ECHR. Kids frogmarched into national service. NHS crumbling to nothing. State schools losing teachers at state of knots. Brexit to continue giving. But hey the tiny number of transfolk will be further ostracised, as well as abortion restricted and women advised to stay at home and birth more kids. Wow so much to look forward to !

and which party is that? If no-one 'you can see' is offering to change the culture of the country are we supposed to accept it how it is? I won't be.

and again, tackling misogyny is a culture change. So is working on the cost of living, Improving access to healthcare. Bringing women and children out of poverty. Just because you care more about the GRA/EA part don't pretend that other policies don't also impart change.

I'd at least understand people voting Tories on this issue if they had a good track record of policies benefitting women but they don't??? So why would you trust them with your rights because you happen to agree on one part of it?

I don't see that at all.

I see the economy and employment blossoming under the conservatives. I see the efforts made to now to capitalise on this countries strengths moving forward and progressing properly.
I see an opportunity to finally have some stability!
For women to be protected, and for those rights to be furthered and championed. I have every faith that we will go from strength to strength after the awful time with the pandemic and the wars. I wish and hope they have the opportunity to do so.

I am comfortable with my choice and do not wish to vote my rights away.

Hummingbird75 · 02/07/2024 10:04

I also want a party that will control immigration so we do not sink under the pro immigration policies that Labour have. I welcome those that can contribute, but we are in no position to take millions more. If you think things are bad now, fast forward a few years under Labour and then see what misery looks like.

The Tories are promising to do something but haven't actually done anything. Seems to be a hot topic for the Tory press. The Tory press like the Mail, with its sidebar of shame, is suddenly a champion of women's rights. I wonder why they'd be whipping up fear before an election. Beats me. Especially for a party whose policies have devastated women.

The Supreme Court ruled that Rwanda was not a safe country.

But if you believe woman can have a penis just because the law says so, then you have to believe that Rwanda was unsafe, became safe for a few months, then became unsafe again, all dependent on UK legal processes. It's all nonsense.

Words have different meanings based on the context and who is using them. I can't stop TRAs using "woman" to mean "anyone who has the gender identity of a woman", and I can't change the UK legal definition of "someone biologically female OR someone male with a GRC" I have to accept that sometimes people use these words to mean some daft niche version.

BUT When Starmer was asked if it was transphobic to say only women have a cervix. He replied "Well, it is something that shouldn't be said. It is not right." This is way beyond the reasonable acknowledgement that there is a technical legal definition on top of the common usage, it is saying that the original mainstream scientific use of the word, used by most of the English speaking world is wrong and shouldn't be used. It is ridiculous and Orwellian.

They have been very unlucky

Firstly having to spend 10 years paying off labours debts. Fact.
Secondly dealing with twin pandemic and wars.

They have been firefighting most of the time.

Starmer said recently that he agreed with Duffield. The GRA is not being repealed by either Labour or Conservatives. Best of luck to the Tories wading through the legal complexity of amending the EA.

Hummingbird75 · 02/07/2024 10:12

Even the most devout of lefties would admit we have had a really tough ride, and any gov would have been under enormous pressure. I would like the conservatives to have the chance to govern in more peaceful times, and deliver on many of their pledges. I also do NOT trust Labour in a crisis of any kind.

And yet he still hasn't spoken to Rosie, not once. And seems to be aiming to get it through the back door now.
