Labour hate people like me

I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

Anyone on MN who dares say anything negative about Labour gets slated. Very high earners and middle earners will leave the UK leaving only low earners. It frightens me to be honest.

Surely there won't be any planes in the immediate Communist dystopia.

Iamthemoom · 01/07/2024 21:09

Yep we feel the same. Tried to discuss the issues we feel concerned about with Labour rep who called today and he wasn't interested once we said having been labour voters our whole lives we were questioning voting labour. He wouldn't even hear us out let alone try and change our minds. We will be worse off in so many ways under Labour. It's not the rich elite who will suffer but the hard working middle class (and we are both working class born, worked hard for everything we have). They could tax the corporations who pay zero tax and make far more money but instead they will punish hard working people like us.

BIossomtoes · 01/07/2024 21:12

They’ve been explicit that they won’t. Tax isn’t “punishment” by the way.

I am willing to pay another penny in the pound as income tax if it means I can get a GP appointment and find a (female-only) public loo when I need one!

Edited

Same about a GP appointment and an NHS dentist.

Brexit put paid to this easy move.

Nah, they can afford the golden ticket that most places have. Still easy to move if you have money.

The amount of tax I pay already is huge. Having homeschooled for years (saving the state money on my child's school place) I have scrimped and saved to afford private school for 2 years of sixth form as schools in my area are horrendous and my child already suffered horrific sexualised bullying which is why I removed her from school. The vat on school fees is a huge punishment to me I'm afraid.

This is why single-sex education should be a legal right. I refused to attend co-ed secondary, insisting on a single-sex school. I'd already been sexually assaulted at primary school and had no intention of tolerating that shit at secondary.

VAT on school fees won’t apply until September next year. If she’s already halfway through sixth form you won’t be paying it.

@Iamthemoom "The vat on school fees is a huge punishment to me I'm afraid."

It really, really isn't a "punishment"

"VAT on school fees won’t apply until September next year. If she’s already halfway through sixth form you won’t be paying it."

She starts September 24 so it will affect me. Also there hasn't been any clarity about when the vat will come in. Most people assume April 25. At one point a labour mp said it would be immediate.

I know loads of high earners in the city, they're all voting Labour or LibDem. I don't know any planing to leave. I know a couple who said they'd leave a few years ago because of Brexit, even they didn't leave though. I do know one who got transferred to Bermuda afterwards.
I know a few medics who've emigrated over the last few years (two young doctors, one nurse). Are these medics the sort of low paid people you're describing who'll now be staying in the UK because of Labour?

You obviously didn't read my post. I have scrimped and saved for years to afford just two years of sixth form after homeschooling due to very serious bullying so yes for people like me it is.

Mia85 · 01/07/2024 21:49

@Bouledeneige I've never heard any of the more extreme views from the IFS, the Economist, FT or think tanks (or not for 20 or 30 years). That Labour would re-nationalise all our infrastructure and utilities (excepting Thames Water which is on the brink of collapse),

Wasn't re-nationalising utilties and infrastructure one of Keir's key leadership pledges? https://x.com/KeirStarmer/status/1227500547877425153 It might not be in their current plans but that's what he said he believed in as part of his radical values and moral case for socialism. Presumably it remains an ultimate aim?

I heard the borders will be sealed on July 5th and all passports will be invalid. We are going to be trapped in a communist hell hole!

Kendodd · 01/07/2024 21:55

Is this what posters are terrified of? Labour renationallising utilities? I believe water is already nationalised in Scotland? As it transport in London? I'm not sure it's such a terrifying prospect Grin

BIossomtoes · 01/07/2024 21:57

The sooner water’s renationalised the better, there might be a bit less shit in the rivers and sea then.

I'm all in favour of renationalisation of utilities. What kind of person thinks it's OK to privatise water?

I'm not, I wish they'd never been sold off in the first place! But I was surprised at the insider PP who said that they hadn't heard anyone mention it for decades

In Ireland it's free

Curlew - some people have been very unpleasant. In my op I said I didn’t know who to vote for but was worried about Labour getting in. Largely because I’m worried about my job but also because of women’s rights being eroded. I don’t think that warranted personal attacks.

Xsnsnshsjs was particularly sneery and unpleasant “ i know enough daily mail reader types like you to know your lot believe you are somehow better than people who are less well off and you deserve what you have and shouldn’t have to share it.” I’d explained I’m a teacher, she (or he) was happy to tell me that she earns half a million pounds a year despite working less hard than teachers but she was happy to pay more tax and I should ‘Chuck some more in the pot’. Because of course all of us can just ‘Chuck’ money around without a thought.

Many people have also accused anyone criticising Labour of being a bot or working for the Tory party - even when they’ve said they are undecided! It’s like they don’t understand that people can have a different opinion and that that opinion isn’t immoral or irrational.

What I find appalling is that the state school failed to protect your child.
