I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

Sir Keir might be doing his best to charm disillusioned liberal Tories, but every time I see Angela Rayner I hear her spitting, 'Tory scum' across the floor of the Commons - she might have been dragged to a non-pology, but she means it.

Good for her

Jonson was also talking about “bum boys”.

Johnson said a lot of nasty stuff. Won a landslide though.

twistyizzy · 30/06/2024 14:06

Luddite26 · 30/06/2024 14:01

But it was ok for Johnson to refer to Muslim women looking like letter boxes.

No of course it wasn't but thank you for proving my point, criticise Labour and the assumption is you support Tories. For the millionth time, I am not a Tory supporter.
Bringing up tit for tat doesn't move us forwards.
All politics is now populist garbage and Labour who are campaigning with a strapline of "Change" are as guilty of this as anyone. This election was a chance to shift things, it failed.

She did actually apologise

And she said: “I was angry about where our country is headed, and policies that have made life harder for so many people I represent.
“But I would like to unreservedly apologise for the language I used, and I would not use it again.
“I will continue to speak my mind, stand up for Labour values and hold the government to account. But in the future I will be more careful about how I do that and in the language that I choose'

Which is more than lots of other people have!

There's a reason it's called the squeezed middle. Doesn't matter who is in No. 10, the squeeze is constant. The perception by others though is that being in the middle is a utopian land of milk and honey. You only have to read the threads on here to see it. There's a lot of jealousy, fury and hatred.

Yes this.

Tara336 · 30/06/2024 14:09

@rockstarshoes I don't know how to post links but there was an occasion in the house of commons as well when Angela Rayner mouthed scum at an MP. So she must have done that more than once as I didn't know about her saying it to activists as well. It clouded my opinion of her because it's just so unprofessional.

Luddite26 · 30/06/2024 14:12

Yes in May 2010 I remember walking in to a world class hospital when my son hasd an accident. Beyond all odds he survived because of the World Class care he received.
14 years of Tory abuse of the NHS would mean he certainly wouldn't survive now.
We certainly are stuffed. And let's hope things can get better after Thursday.

CurlewKate · 30/06/2024 14:14

@pernillas "but every time I see Angela Rayner I hear her spitting, 'Tory scum' across the floor of the Commons "

Interesting. You know that's not what happened, don't you? As others have said, she see the word-not in the house- and apologised for it.

It's not tit for tat. I was providing an example of what is ok for some to say, especially old Etonians, and, how others get dragged over the coals for what they say.

Johnson said a lot of nasty stuff. Won a landslide though.

Boris Johnson did not just say nasty stuff. What he did/has done at a personal level is nasty too, and I am not convinced we know much of what has happened behind closed doors.

He still speaks to his father who assaulted his late mother so badly she ended up in hospital, and if the reports were true, was planning to give him a knighthood.

CurlewKate · 30/06/2024 14:20

If you give me a few more details, I'll find it and post the link for you.

LlynTegid · 30/06/2024 14:22

OP, please do not spoil your ballot. If your constituency looks like a forgone conclusion, vote for the party likely to come second or one of the smaller parties. The lower the proportion of votes your MP gets, the more chance he or she might pay attention to local issues, many of which are non party political.

Zotter · 30/06/2024 14:23

Living standards have dropped for the majority of population in the last 14 years. Public services have been decimated too. Both productivity and pay had been stagnating for well over a decade even before recent inflation. Real wages grew by an average of 33% each decade from 1970 to 2007; but they are now back at the level they were at in 2005, according to data from the Office for National Statistics, ONS (Times, 2023). Only beneficiaries under Tories have been those with lots of wealth/assets - such as multiple properties, stocks and shares etc.

Austerity under Cameron and Osborne plays a big role in the above. It was an ideological choice to shrink state. It was an economically poor choice too as austerity measures during economically unstable periods like after global crash do not produce economic growth. Why U.K. has had slow economic growth since 2010.

On top those on low incomes and sick and disabled have suffered hugely. I am disabled, I pay £4000 per year more in real terms taking into account inflation for my social care now than 2010. Will lose £1000 immediately when I am changed over to UC and further £45 per week once transitional cover ends. So many have suffered these last 14 years. Child poverty soared.

Briefly on women, Labour are fudging transgender issue though dial is shifting in right direction. There are though positive policies on other womens rights. They aim to provide more protection to victims of domestic abuse. “Raneem’s law” will require police to respond faster to reports of domestic violence and to consider immediate use of orders to protect women. The law will put domestic abuse specialists in 999 control rooms to make sure victims are responded to urgently. They plan to establish 80 new rape courts across and England and Wales to fast-track cases as part of wide-ranging plans to tackle violence against women and girls.

Same here. I’m an ordinary person and I understand that Labour intend to take away my life’s savings and double VAT on food. I don’t know how I will cope. I would leave the country but I expect Labour to seal the borders.

I'm embarrassed for you.

Thank you OSU. The personal attacks / assumptions I’ve received in what I particularly requested as a place free from such has reinforced my worries that Labour don’t care about people like me - they’ve literally said so. I’d really like Labour supporters to define what they mean by wealthy - I think a lot of people who think Labour will help them are about to be shocked when they realise that Labour considers them wealthy. Labour is very ‘us and them’ but I don’t think they’ve been at all honest about the ‘squeezed middle’ who are going to suffer. Many people in that bracket aren’t high earners and are just about managing.

I’d define wealthy as the top 5%.

ActivePeony · 30/06/2024 14:24

I'm a woman - not bothered about the XX/XY debate. I think it's time we did have a change and move to a sexless society which benefits everyone regardless of genetics. I think we have gone too far with protecting woman that men are seen as second class citizens presumed guilty no matter what. As the mum of a boy that worries me a lot more than someone getting a sneaky picture of me in a changing room

I see that Andrew Tate's influence has spread.

No one on here has said it's acceptable but accepted him as an acceptable PM despite being a proven liar who went onto lie and lie and lie some more.

paasll · 30/06/2024 14:29

I feel similarly OP. I’d urge you to vote either Lib Dem or Conservative - whichever is the most likely to reduce Labour’s majority.

Labour are going to seriously hurt people who have worked their guts out and managed to save/buy a house etc. “working people” only includes those that earn up to 30 something k. The rest can bend over and get ready to be fucked. And people who don’t work don’t count as working people.

I didn’t vote last election. I don’t like any of them. But Starmer is terrifying.

Labour will hurt people. And unfortunately the “improvements” won’t materialise.

my ds has just left a private school. Starmer is so out of touch that he doesn’t realise that private schools are short of maths teachers as well. In ours, they’ve increased maths classes to 25+ and cover work is frequently emailed for older kids to do completely alone. No teacher at all in the classroom not even a cover teacher. Teachers have had breakdowns as they are so overworked. The attitude that most private schools can “trim costs” is utterly ignorant and out of touch with what’s going on. It’s also disturbing that everyone happy with VAT on private fees doesn’t realise the consequences for other stuff. If they are VATing all fees, then nothing’s off limits. My fees included food swimming lessons and transport!!

I’d really like Labour supporters to define what they mean by wealthy

I would define as those with a lot of wealth/assets - such as multiple properties, stocks and shares etc..

“As workers’ wages stagnate, payout to shareholders has soared.Research by the High Pay Centre found that across the FTSE 100, returns to shareholders (dividends and share buybacks) increased by 56% between 2014 and 2018. This resulted from a 45% increase in dividends, while share buybacks more than doubled. Nominal pay for the median worker increased by just 8% over the same period.

If wage increases had kept pace with shareholder returns, the typical worker would now be over £9,500 better off.

Total returns to shareholders over the period amounted to £442 billion from net profits of £551 billion. This is the equivalent of giving shareholders around £1.7bn a week every week from 2014 through to the end of 2018.

Payments to shareholders primarily benefit a wealthy minority. UK taxpayers earning over £150,000 (barely 1% of all taxpayers) captured around 22% of all direct income from UK dividends. Dividend income accruing via pension savings also disproportionately benefits those at the top – 46% of pension wealth is owned by the wealthiest 10% of households”.
