General election 2024

Keir, what do you think?

Labour will win this General Election but I don’t think Sir Keir will be party leader a year from now because there are many amongst Labour MP’s who will want to be more radical. Who would you like to see as leader of the Labour Party a year from now and why?

@ActivePeony because it's worth pointing out

BurbageBrook · 06/06/2024 19:20

I think it's really the thickest people who need their politicians to be all "jazz hands" or to have a bombastic overbearing personality. I like how calm and measured Keir is. But I vote for parties not people anyway.

Bullsey · 06/06/2024 19:23

I think we have got so used to "big personalities" as politicians that we've forgotten that there should be more to the next PM than "charisma". It's quite refreshing to see someone with manners and who doesn't just shout down the opposition with lies and insults.

He's from a working class background and he's clearly incredibly intelligent. He's brought the labour party back to a more central position and given them back credibility after Corbyn.

If they win the election i can't see why they would need to replace him. The media and tories can say what they like - so far he hasn't really put a foot wrong - against a backdrop of 14 years of tory corruption, immorality and greed.

Alfreddoeblin · 06/06/2024 19:25

@GasPanic your opinion of the the British people is very poor. Why would we suddenly all ask for handouts ?
What I do know is that scrapping inheritance tax and cutting NIC is not going to help improve public services.

dontcallmelen · 06/06/2024 19:26

I’m more concerned with the behaviour of this government & the continual lurching into very right wing behaviour the disdain for international law & treaties, the hateful narrative around refugees/benefits the rinsing of the countries finances far more than a few possibly hard left contingent lurking around.

Bymrsjeeves · 06/06/2024 19:29

He’s bad enough, as we all witnessed this week. The far left within the party will get rid of him in no time. Leaving us with a pile of ineffectual Corbyn style horrendousness. Blaming the Tories for everything and doing nothing useful whatsoever.

JoJothegerbil · 06/06/2024 19:29

I think he'll be leader/PM fingers crossed for a long time. Ok, he's not that charismatic and has a slightly monotonous voice but is competent, steady and intelligent. I want my leaders to be boring and free from scandal quite frankly. It'll make a refreshing change not to have the govt lurching from one disaster to another.

Exactly. It feels like the grown ups are going to be back in charge. About bloody time too.

The far left will not get rid of Sir Keir.

The Labour Party is pretty united at the moment.

‘The far left’ and ‘Sir Keir’.. anyone spot the problem there?

Lonelycrab · 06/06/2024 19:36

Keir, what do you think?

Op, compared to the last almost decade of utter incompetence from the Tories,

Keir Starmer will be a breath of fresh air, someone with integrity, intelligence , humility and morals, not beholden or accountable to the extremists in his party like the last five bloody prime ministers of this country have been.

I feel extremely glad that there is a strong chance he’ll be Pm.

Nope, reckon it's just you.

Keir Starmer got his 'sir' on merit, not in some bollocks honours list drawn up by a hastily departing Tory ex PM.

And the other 47 Geebeebies viewers 😂

And there we go again! Anyone who doesn't think what I think must be thick. It's is fucking puerile. Grow up.

My point was not that I wanted a 'jazz hands' leader - unless that is what you consider Obama to be in which case I cannot help you - it was that as a barrister he should be a MUCH better orator.

And if you think his performance the other night was calm and measured...he looked like terrified owl for most of it and very few of his points landed.

Well we disagree on this then.

Im just laughing at this laughable, desperate drivel:

The far left within the party will get rid of him in no time

Which is clearly a load of haggard old nonsense, sorry if you can’t see the utter stupidity of it; I can!

Ah bless. Another champagne socialist. It’s embarrassing for you.

Honours rooted in the British Empire?
Sure no problemo.
But aren’t you a Socialist?
Well yes I am but but.. erm this is because erm .. because… 😂 pathetic.

You are half correct!!!

Starmer won't by pm if they get into number ten via the rear door with a coalition partner/s.

Ms Abbott is fully supportive of her compared, Ms Rayner, IMO and the left will soon fix Starmer

It just goes to show that there's nothing positive to say about the Tories, so posters have to resort to attacking Labour.

Keir Starmer is used to speaking in a courtroom, where people are allowed to finish making their point. And in the HoC he has frequently ripped Rishi to little shreds. Just because he was expecting his opponent to show some manners and let him speak, people on here are calling him names.

Balls to that. Yes, he didn't fight dirty enough. But I respect him more for not stooping to the same blustering bullshit level that Rishi Sunak was displaying on Tuesday.

And of course after the deputies' debate on Friday, the usual suspects will be out slating Angela Rayner for not being polite enough. Because hey, double standards.

ActivePeony · 06/06/2024 19:58

What names has he been called?

Alfreddoeblin · 06/06/2024 19:59

@ActivePeony and Sunak, despite an education costing £100k + was a shouty braying archetypal Eton schoolboy who was regularly participating in debating club from the age of 11.
Funnily enough I listened to a phone-in the other day on 5live and 80% of the callers liked Starmer and thought Sunak was rude. Most people don’t see gotchas a la sun newspaper (and lying ones at that) as an indicator of a thoughtful intelligent politician.

LOL, it is TRUE and that is a fact

They've had 15 years to prepare for gov. The polls are massively in favour of Labour. And , socialist Starmmer was given a good hiding by Sunak

Starmer looked like a defeated fox caught in the headlights of lorry when Sunak stated the facts re his right-hand person/Rayner stance on a "nuclear deterrent."

Putin must be really happy
