General election 2024

Keir, what do you think?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 06/06/2024 16:04

Labour will win this General Election but I don’t think Sir Keir will be party leader a year from now because there are many amongst Labour MP’s who will want to be more radical. Who would you like to see as leader of the Labour Party a year from now and why?

And the potential replacements for Sunak when he resigns on July 5th are far more concerning when it comes to taking a party to the extreme

If they’ve (the remnants of the CP) have got an ounce of sense between them (debatable) they’ll understand they can’t out extreme the extremiststs and let deform shout at the pigeons move to a more rational position, maybe actually conserve things, rather than burning it all down. Getting in bed with the wrong-uns has effectively finished them, and that’s basically Cameron’s fault, his gamble. Major was right- they always were bastards.

But I am not a Tory so what would I know.

The same could be said of the hard right. In fact there’s a number of them in plain sight right now, and in my view they are far more of a worry than the perceived “hard left”.

The thread is about Starmer.

BurbageBrook · 06/06/2024 18:54

People voted for Hitler because of how much charisma he had, btw. I don't care about how charismatic my leader is. I want them to lead with integrity.

What hard left ?

Who is actually left of the "hard left" ? I mean Abbott has been a good politician but she is finished now politically. Corbyn has been banished. People like Skinner have retired.

There isn't really a hard left. Starmer doesn't have to really purge it, because it isn't there. The biggest chance of a resurgence of the hard left really comes from the Labour leadership itself lurching to the left.

Will that happen ? I don't know.

I have a family member in Momentum. They hate and despise Starmer with all that they've got - but are looking forward to when he gets in as they feel that they can put him under pressure. Like it or not - the hard left still exists.

Indeed it is. But you spouted some nonsense about the hard left biding their time on the thread so I responded.

He was a human rights barrister qualified law degree and post grad education but I guess any old fool tops that. The smears and insults are coming thick and fast , he must be doing something right!

But bizarrely incapable of speaking in an inspiring way or in a way that would engage. Compare and contrast with Obama.

I don't think so.
@pointythings makes some very valid points.

To be fair I'm not always #bekind in how I make them. Then again, if you come out with slurs, smears and outright lies, why should I be kind in rebutting them?

ActivePeony · 06/06/2024 19:01

Don't get the hated for Angela Rayner. It’s pure snobbery. Only certain types of wc people seem to be acceptable, mainly the ones that know their place

Again and again I see this. She is a raving TRA which is one reason I cannot stand her. She also thinks that labelling others 'scum' is an astute political tactic. I am a working class person btw.

BurbageBrook · 06/06/2024 19:01

Yeah but the Momentum lot tend to be a bit delusional. He won't swing to the left. He's resisted their pressure so far, and he will continue to when in government. He's very sensible. The more worrying extremists around right now are in the Tory party.

If you could explain how a group outside parliament can pressure a PM to move from the centre ground I'm all ears.

How do they intend to put him under pressure?

So Obama was lucky in the talents he was endowed with. KS has been slightly less so.

But frankly, I'd choose competence over charisma any day of the week. I'd also choose it over diversity any day of the week.

And anyone in Momentum who thinks they're going to wield increased influence when Labour gets in is delusional.

IClaudine · 06/06/2024 19:06

You know, every now and then I get a tiny pang of nervousness that the Tories will get in.

But the plethora of threads all on similar subjects-VAT on school fees, the £2k tax lie, and the hard left taking over-reassure me that the Tories and their supporters are desperate because they know their party is over.

StrawberryEater · 06/06/2024 19:07

ActivePeony · 06/06/2024 19:01

With pointless whataboutery.

Nope. It’s wholly relevant when there are hard right members of the Conservative Party and that is the possible alternative to a Labour government. Especially if Reform gain any sort of credibility.

I consider that more likely and a worse option than the incredibly unlikely situation that some shadowy “hard left” figures turn up and force KS’s hand.

Do you not think that any Labour MPs are Momentum sympathisers?

Most of them have been purged, tbh.

user1471453601 · 06/06/2024 19:13

I've gone back five party leaders, none have been thrown under the bus.

Kinnock resigned after loosing the election. Smith died. Blair chose to resign. Brown resigned after loosing an election. Corbyn resigned after loosing an election.

I don't rule out the fact that four of the five may have been leaned on to encourage them to go, but by and large, the Labour party doesn't tend to publicly oust leaders.

look, for comparison at the last five Tory leaders. Cameron resigned after loosing the Brexit vote. May was forced out. Johnson was forced out. As Was Truss. Sunak is hanging on by the skin of his teeth. But will, I think, resign, if he looses the upcoming election.

CaptainOliviaBenson · 06/06/2024 19:14

Actually, I think Starmer will be PM for quite a while. He's fairly stable, and enough of a centrist/non-radical to appease both sides of the party.

Lonelycrab · 06/06/2024 19:15

But the plethora of threads all on similar subjects

Its simply carpet bombing, from an increasingly hopeless and desperate set of (often unrecognised) posters, nothing more, but we’ve got another four weeks of this drivel to come.
