I have just been watching the news and saw this as a headline. Does anyone know more about what this will be made up of if they come into power? Starmer didn't seem to answer the question. I did google the policies but couldn't see this. Thank you!

I can easily believe a "working family" will have to pay, on average, an extra £2000 tax over 4 years, but this is irrespective of who wins the election.

Both main parties have said they will not be increasing tax thresholds. This means someone on £30,000 now pays £3486 income tax. If wages increase by 3% per year then salary will be £30900 £31827 £32782 £33765 and income tax will be £3666 £3851 £4042 £4239. This person will thus pay £1854 more income tax over 4 years than they do now. If two people in this family earn the same then the family will pay £3708 more. Thus a £2000/family average is easily believable.

I was really interested the other night when Aaron Bastani a real Labour left supporter/ political commentator even said Keir Starmer is a committed liar and wouldn't want him as PM. Very strange to hear a left winger not supporting the Labour candidate.

Not really - the hard left hate Starmer.

You hit the nail on the head. Starmer didn't answer the question. Which means yes taxes will increase. Even for working class families. He also blatenly lies clearly. As apparently a man worth over 7 million pounds wouldn't pay for private treatment if his family really needed it, I find that hard to believe!

Historically labour do increase taxes and screw over those working hard. If you watched the debate he was very evasive in answering this. At least for all his negarives sunak can say he has reduced NI. I've noticed a small change in take home pay due to this. I mean its not loads. But at least it's not reduced my take home.

If you actually look back at what labour historically do, if you care about the overall financial health of the country, and therefore your own financial wellbeing you'll be cautious of voting labour and ask a lot of questions of their plans. If they had clear plans and were transparent I might get behind them. I remember in 1997 being scared of the change. I'm scared now. We are middle high earners, but not hugely wealthy. We shop in aldi, budget etc. Under labour we're the ones that will be screwed. The tories aren't exactly a good choice either, i'm no fan. But when the alternative is as hypocritical and evasive as starmer, it doesn't help!

How could you ever justify voting for the party that took us out of the EU, lumbered us with that fat fornicator Johnson and mad Liz Truss, while also raising taxes to the highest level in 40 years?

I dont have a problem with taxes increasing again - its how the money is used/wasted

Labour lies as much as the Toties. The difference with labour is they want a socialist state ie great education/nhs/ploce etc but it will cost laods of billions extra - then they are chums with the unions, so to keep the workers happy especially in the public sector, another loads of billions

just look at some labour coucils - gone belly up and locals are paying for it

yes, we've, most of us have had to make cuts, we adjust just like tory coucils have done

labour does not know when to stop throwing away taxpayers money and they will hit the average joe on the street the hardest, EG, owns a property, has a mortgage, earings are around average both the hubby and wife works, have a laf decent car that is not petrol/diesel and go on hols abroad and have private pension and some have a BTL for pension reasons - they will be hit the hardest

noblegiraffe · 09/06/2024 23:15

You think that Labour councils have gone belly-up and Tory councils have fared better because the Tory councils are better at managing their money?

It's because Labour councils have been disproportionately affected by cuts.

And remember Rishi saying in Tunbridge Wells that he would divert funding away from deprived areas towards wealthier areas? Guess what?

Austerity hitting Labour councils harder than Tory areas

New analysis has revealed that Labour councils have borne the brunt of local government cuts over a decade of austerity.

This is just old fashioned arse and has been extensively debunked by actual facts, rather than blind partisan bollocks.
