I have just been watching the news and saw this as a headline. Does anyone know more about what this will be made up of if they come into power? Starmer didn't seem to answer the question. I did google the policies but couldn't see this. Thank you!

I don’t believe a word the tories say.

remember the bus with the poster for £350million a week extra for the nhs if we did Brexit? What happened to that? They pull these figures out their arses.

I’d happily pay the extra tenner a week to get waiting lists down, see a GP, fill the potholes, fund schools, improve social care, reopen the libraries and Sure Start centres and give a huge percentage of this country their lives back.

Same. I started a thread months ago saying this and a lot of people agreed. I’m not saying everyone can afford it, there obviously needs to be a cut off because a lot of people are struggling. But for those above a certain income then yes we probably do need to pay more.

and people can disagree, that’s fine. But you can’t have it both ways. You can’t be excited about low tax conservatives and then expect socialist type institutions like the nhs and free education.

I'm not sure if someone's mentioned this already but The News Agents podcast did an excellent episode on the £2000 claim featuring someone who used to do these sorts of sums for governments at elections.

In summary they're total gibberish - the guest called them 'grubby' and hoped some future government would be brave enough to call an end to the entire exercise as governments on both sides have historically used it to make bold claims without the caveats the civil servants themselves have to include on their own work. Well worth a listen X

tinytemper66 · 05/06/2024 21:00

It isn't true!

Labour £2000 extra working class families
shams05 · 05/06/2024 21:04

That's 50 percent of what the Tories proposed to raise taxes by over the next parliament but that doesn't hit the headlines.
I think it was R4 who've just debunked this £2k rise in tax claim by the Tories about Labour.

I was really interested the other night when Aaron Bastani a real Labour left supporter/ political commentator even said Keir Starmer is a committed liar and wouldn't want him as PM. Very strange to hear a left winger not supporting the Labour candidate.

A massive Corbynista not supporting Starmer, and you're surprised? Corbyn himself is standing against Labour.

HelloJillll · 05/06/2024 21:10

More Tory lies and quite frankly, disrespect and arrogance towards voters.

They never learn.

I think your mortgage has gone up due to inflation.

This is helpful link.

Is that you Liz?

charitynamechange · 05/06/2024 21:19

It's akin and comparable to the £350m to the NHS which Brexit supporters put about.
Another lie. Say it enough and the largely Tory press will repeat it and it will stick
Despicable.

It's a lie

The letter is in the tweet

x.com/hzeffman/status/1798252445321343456

EXCLUSIVE

The chief Treasury civil servant wrote to Labour two days ago saying that the £38 billion/£2,000 tax attack “should not be presented as having been produced by the civil service”

He said he had reminded ministers of this

Doesn't matter that it's a lie. It'll be screamed from the front pages and complete mugs will believe it .

SuePreemly · 05/06/2024 21:22

makeanddo · 05/06/2024 09:37

So why didn't Starmer immediately shut that down?

It's because he knows they are going to raise taxes on hardworking people who have no more to give.

Because he's a lawyer.

When your opponent is making a mistake, you don't interrupt.

He was very likely giving Rishi the rope to hang himself with by being able to call out the lies the following day with actual evidence rather than just shouting during the soundbiteathon that was that "debate"

Not really, there is a well established fight going on between the very left faction, personified by Corbyn and his buds, and the more moderate wing, which Starmer represents. The source quoted as the origin of the £2000 claim was the civil service - which turned out to be a lie.

Hopebridge · 05/06/2024 21:42

The mini budget had some impact but can't be responsible for the mortgage increase entirely in my opinion. I see your point however. I'm not a fan of the increase either and much preferred the lower interest rates. Mortgages have historically always gone up and down. As they are typically the largest bill payment have a huge impact on my outgoings. I'm sure many find the same. Obviously if the interest rates drop that would be fantastic (although I'm fixed for now).

I will keep following the news etc and hopefully the manifestos are out soon.

  1. The Tories have just been on R4 saying that it is a totally £500 yearly, not £2000
  2. The treasury Civil servants have written a letter to say that the numbers are misleading and inaccurate.
  3. Both parties pledged not to raise VAT or income-tax or one other tax, so it wouldn't becoming from 'families pockets'

Annoys me that the can make soundbites like that which are so misleading. They don't care about the accuracy, but got all the headlines any way. Dishonest.

£500 per year is still a HUGE amount for most working families. Especially in a cost of living crisis. Labour always increase taxes and they are making so many promises now that if they deliver them it will cost a LOT of money. Where do you think that will come from? A bit of VAT added to private school fees? Really??

AnitaLoos · 05/06/2024 21:46

It’s a lie. Sunak is a shameless, barefaced liar. He knowingly lied to the whole country on tv.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/06/2024 21:49

Ah. A thread with a seemingly innocent query. Not, obviously.

Hedgeoffressian · 05/06/2024 21:51

HighlandCowbag · 05/06/2024 09:52

An extra cost of £500 a year to get a functioning NHS, including dentists, is a steal I think. I've paid £700 this year for dental costs alone as we can't get an NHS dentist. Dd has missed so much uni she's having to resit a year as GPs haven't diagnosed a lifelong condition despite repeated appointments where she gets 2 mins to describe complicated symptoms if she even gets an appointment. DH lost 4 days at work at a cost of about £800 as couldn't get a GP appointment and needed antibiotics.

£500 or even 2k is a small cost really.

£500 is a monthly grocery shop for my family. It might be a small cost to you but unfortunately not all of us are so lucky.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/06/2024 21:56

Sunak lied. This claim was known to be a lie when Sunak said it numerous times in last night's debate.

So did he know it was a lie?

Of course he knew. Tories are gonna Tory. Lying is in their blood.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 05/06/2024 22:05

It's totally made up Tory none sense. They've even admitted it.

Even if the numbers weren't made up, Tory tax rises already in the budget due to come in next year are DOUBLE what they are accusing Labour of.

Tories have increased tax for average households by over £3000 a year. If you used their wonky logic of tax rises in the parliament Labour would be saying 'Tories raise taxes by £12k for each household'

The contempt they hold for the British public's intelligence is disgusting.

idratherbedrawing · 05/06/2024 22:23

There is no evidence to substantiate this claim. Labour have been clear they aren't going to raise taxes on working people. I do think they will need to find more £££ from somewhere tho - Public services need investment. Personally I bloody hope they have the confidence to raise taxes on the richest, taxing wealth to reduce inequality and make our public services function properly. A decent health service, schools and transport don't come for free. Countries with higher taxes have better public services. They need to tax the richest to pay for the big investment needed initially. Longer term I'd be comfortable with broader tax rises. You get what you pay for. Look at the Nordic countries- higher tax but everyone has a better life

So does he think we're thick? That we weren't going to find out? Is Sunak so arrogant and contemptuous of us?Hmm

I wouldn't blame him if he wasn't totally on this. He is busy atm and his team should have had this. But as soon as he realised, the right thing to do is correct it and apologise.

Why hasn't he?
Didn't he make a big thing about restoring Integrity to the Tories?Hmm

Thing is, if it were true, £2,000 each to get rid of the Tories is an absolute bargain.

Tel12 · 05/06/2024 23:16

I read that there's an 11bn hole in the public finances so we're all paying more no matter who gets in.
