Tonight's TV debate Sunak v Starmer - any predictions?

CallingOccupantsOfInterplanetaryCraft · 04/06/2024 16:44

Anyone up for a watch thread? Maybe even debate bingo. I know I know, don't threaten me with a good time. (Bingo suggestions: natural party of business, Labour has no plan, end the chaos, Rayner will take over, assorted references to Starmer's time as DPP probably blaming for Jimmy Saville again, inflation is down etc etc.)

At this point I seriously doubt anything like this will remotely change the game Nick Clegg style. I read somewhere the only way Sunak could come out of this ahead in the polls is if Starmer pulled off a mask scooby-doo style to reveal he's Jeremy Corbyn, which admittedly would be great telly.

I'm so fed up with the endless rhetoric but will definitely watch later anyway.

The 2030 deadline was set by Boris Johnson. It dies not mean everyone has to buy new cars by then. It means if you buy a new car or want to replace your boiler, it has to be electric or a heat pump.
Most people will still be driving petrol cars and have combi boilers. But when these need replaced you then buy the new technology.
But I suspect you already understand this.

YourPinkDog · 05/06/2024 01:33

Sunak is a weak Prime Minister who struggles to manage the country, He is not up to the job.

But I don’t want to be forced to buy an air heat source pump - have you any idea how bad they are for noise pollution??

YourPinkDog · 05/06/2024 01:38

We have houses near us that have air heat pumps and I have never noticed any noise.

Well how can you not hear them if they are close?! They make a bloody racket. Maybe you live in a noisy area.

YourPinkDog · 05/06/2024 01:40

I have just googled and it said early heat pumps were noisy, but the technology has since improved. The houses near me are eco houses built with air heating pumps, and they must be using newer technology as I have never noticed issues with noise - and I have been inside.

Well my neighbour had his fitted in December and it is noisy, I am assuming there is more than one type. This all seems like virtue signaling to me.

Fiddling with air pumps whilst Rome burns kinda thing.

David Olusoga eloquently describing how the Tories have exacerbated inequality in this country and really hurt the most vulnerable in our society.
This is why I cannot vote Tory

The thought of a Labour Govt after last night is frightening. Starmer couldn’t answer a question. They have no plan other than to raise taxes. Sunak wiped the floor with him.

@sandorschicken because most of those who held us to those restrictions, and then broke them, would form your next conservative government. If they doesn't bother you I think it says more about you than them I'm afraid.

Edited

I don't care what you think it says about me. My family had a torrid time during the pandemic and the government could have had a party every day and it would have made absolutely no difference. One political party having cheese & wine doesn't mean that the next government will improve anything!

And if people think lying MPs are exclusive to the Conservative Party then I feel sorry for your naivety!

BurbageBrook · 05/06/2024 06:30

I want a politician with good morals and convictions, not one who's a quicker speaker and able to shout someone down more in a 45 second slot. Labour have plenty of policies.

YourPinkDog · 05/06/2024 01:33

Sunak is a weak Prime Minister who struggles to manage the country, He is not up to the job.

He repeatedly said that he’s so great because he was ‘kind’ enough to furlough people during the pandemic whilst also complaining about not thinking about the past.

He clearly had no empathy for the audience members who spoke directly to him about what a hard time they are having and he has no ability to read the room, banging on about how hard his parents worked so they could send him to private school(!)

He is not relatable.

Accusing anyone new or name changed who disagrees with you of being a paid for shill isn't the 'gotcha' you think it is...

BurbageBrook · 05/06/2024 06:32

I should say, meaningful policies which will actually benefit our country and are fully costed, unlike most of the nonsense the Tories come out with. The Tories have done an unbelievably shit job of running the country for the last 14 years and should not be trusted with it for another second.

Rishi is a piss-poor politician and not a particularly good speaker. If he was able to dominate Starmer (I haven't watched it, I'm only going by this thread), that's a worry for Labour.

Sunak is a very good talker, he does it none stop but he cannot get away from the fact that he and/or his party have 14 years.... everything wrong in the country is on him.

Tax raises? thats rich coming from Sunak who has raised them to the highest levels since WW2, inc freezing all of our thresholds until 2028.

Labour have no plan to raise taxes.

So why didn’t Starmer mention any of them? Even the green pledges belong to Boris Johnson!

Unicornsparks88 · 05/06/2024 06:36

Let’s remember the state Labour left the country in when they were last in power. They spent all the money. Angela Rayner in power is also a frightening prospect. Immigration will rocket as they have no plan and were unable to answer what they would do.

Are you kidding me?

Labour NO plan to raise taxes? Why do yoh think that? Starmer made no effort to correct Sunak despite the number of times he had the opportunity to do so.

You have at least £2000 rise guaranteed. I do believe that’s just the start too.

CaveMum · 05/06/2024 06:42

Labour have no plans to raise taxes

I really recommend that people listen to last week’s The Rest is Money podcast which features an interview with Head of the IFS Paul Johnson. He spells out that whoever gets in Taxes will HAVE to go up. None of the pledges being made by both parties are possible without rises.

He takes shots at both sides, but make no mistake we will be paying more in one way or another.

You'll have to show me the manifesto or any other document that says that?

Or is it a unsubstantiated "feeling" ?

How much extra tax have you paid because thresholds have been frozen for years? was that in the Tories 2019 manifesto??? or how much extra loan interest have our young people paid because the Tories raised loan interest rates and lowered thresholds???

...but Labour...

thefireplace · 05/06/2024 06:46

@CaveMum Probably true, my point is the pp doesn't know the exact plan, if there even is one yet(Lab haven't seen the books yet) or who will be paying.

In which case why did Sunak cut NI ? sounds incredibly irresponsible.

RadFs · 05/06/2024 06:48

This is the truth about Sunak. He has been on the scene long before with his hedge fund companies. Apparently one of the causes for the financial crash around 2010. He made millions then.

Sunak was proved himself to be slippery . They have lied so much and are so transparent with their dirty tricks and election gimmicks. Cannot bear them. They have frozen income tax thresholds for years and then he has the cheek to accuse Labour of increasing taxes by £2k which is a figure plucked from the air in true Boris bus style.
I am happy to pay more tax if it means better services. I was happy with the increase in NI that was for the NHS and what did Rishi do? He scrapped it!

greengreyblue · 05/06/2024 06:59

@Summerdays24 Starmer did react to Sunak’s £2k tax lie. He said it was garbage.
