Tonight's TV debate Sunak v Starmer - any predictions?

Anyone up for a watch thread? Maybe even debate bingo. I know I know, don't threaten me with a good time. (Bingo suggestions: natural party of business, Labour has no plan, end the chaos, Rayner will take over, assorted references to Starmer's time as DPP probably blaming for Jimmy Saville again, inflation is down etc etc.)

At this point I seriously doubt anything like this will remotely change the game Nick Clegg style. I read somewhere the only way Sunak could come out of this ahead in the polls is if Starmer pulled off a mask scooby-doo style to reveal he's Jeremy Corbyn, which admittedly would be great telly.

I'm so fed up with the endless rhetoric but will definitely watch later anyway.

Jesus Christ - he can’t even answer the question from Gareth Southgate!

He did?

The course of action depends on which issue you are dealing with. I don’t want a prime minister who just says he will make “bold decisions”, I’d rather have a prime minister that considers each issue individually before deciding what action to take.

That was awful, & neither man comes out of it well, but Sunak definitely won. I very much doubt it will change anything, though, so Starmer will just be relieved it’s over.

Agree

What a fucking useless pile of empty bollocks Sunak is

14 years to fuck the country and this is what he comes up with

But apparently that's KS fault for not spending those 14 years (of which he's been leader of labour for 4 ish) thinking about how to solve it.

Beats "but Corbyn" I suppose 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️

LumiB · 04/06/2024 22:10

He should though, it was a lifeline for so many people who would of been out of jobs, losing homes etc. The stress that would have caused, if that was tour business you had built up and to lose it all due to an unprecented event across the world. He did the right thing, it might have cost us but I am damn well okay about that.

It’s more relevant to remind people he was once helping them and popular than KS bringing up being in the CPS every 2 minutes

LaurieFairyCake · 04/06/2024 22:11

Obviously 🙄 Starmer won over Sunak in that debate

LumiB · 04/06/2024 22:11

Therichgetricher · 04/06/2024 22:08

It will raise fuck all and create a chaos that has been very clearly predicted for some time. A vote for this policy alone is like a turkey voting for xmas. Let people with money do what they want. This is not the answer to fixing the issues in schools.

It was said somewhere, don't remember where, that a European country had done what KS wants to do and it was a disaster.

Springchickenonion · 04/06/2024 22:11

I'm not disagreeing with that @LumiB I'm saying. That's all he has to say.... its not going to make me vote for him in the next election..I want to know what he will do going forward. Not what he did in lockdown (the one they made compulsory)

DontBiteTheCat · 04/06/2024 22:11

@Anxiousheartbeat this looks like a plan to me?

Starmer won the debate clearly.

Sunak absolutely didn't.

Theweepywillow · 04/06/2024 22:12

I’m quite shocked at that, starmer was unable to answer any questions, literally. I thought he would have at least had some plan, but he just looked panicked and avoided the questions.

he was totally out of his depth, it’s bloody terrifying, can you imagine he actually got in, him and raynor, it doesn’t bear thinking about.

I thought it would be more evenly matched, but sunak wiped the floor with him, I can understand why he doesn’t want to debate sunak.

uniquestionss · 04/06/2024 22:12

Starmer should have reminded everyone about all the parties during covid

You watched a different debate to me.

Fair enough but starmer was no better spent all his time banging on about past 14yrs instead of actually answering the questions and saying what he will do. I think sunak at least was direct with his answer and plans on quite a few

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 04/06/2024 22:13

Anxiousheartbeat · 04/06/2024 22:01

He’s had many, many 45 seconds and has answered fuck all

He gave more detail than Sunak. The format was pretty crap overall though. Quickfire questions are nonsense.

Because Sunak is rude and shouting over him constantly

Springchickenonion · 04/06/2024 22:13

True @LumiB they weren't great, either of them. I agree with you

fungipie · 04/06/2024 22:13

and me

WindsurfingDreams · 04/06/2024 22:13

Sunak was risible. He constantly tried to pretend they hadn't been in power for 14 years.

He has had plenty of time to carefully consider these issues

Monkeytennis97 · 04/06/2024 22:08

DH just said to me it's a choice between no plan or shit plan.

This feels tragically accurate @Monkeytennis97, but your DH's summary did make us laugh!

I'm a Labour voter traditionally and believe my values broadly align much more with left than right wing politics. I wish Kier was able to give a clear indication of what I'd be voting for. That felt like an hour of watching them just bicker at eachother without either answering a straight question. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I found myself forced to agree with Sunak's closing statement - I don't agree with any of what he's saying, but at least I know what he stands for!

Morsmordre · 04/06/2024 22:13

fungipie · 04/06/2024 22:11

Not a fan of Sunak but really? 🤯

Pair of kids the both of them. Keir looks like Daddy Peppa Pig and Rishi looks like Wallace.

We're truly fucked.
