General election 2024
Swingingvvoter · 03/06/2024 19:07

I'm still not sure who labours core vote is though.

I agree with a comment I heard on the radio "Labour are going to do well because the tories are doing so badly. Not because Labour is looking good."

GCAcademic · 03/06/2024 19:08

It says something about the disgraceful state of the Tory party that Labour can exceed the extent of their 1997 landslide under a leader who lacks the charisma of Blair.

I can well believe this. Had dinner with a group of work contacts recently- people who you might typically expect to vote Tory (40s-50s, high earners). Not one person was voting for them- they were either voting Labour/Lib Dem (or Reform in one case) or planning not to vote. And it really didn't seem a case of "shy Tories" either- people are genuinely sick of them and absolutely furious. Much more so than in 97.

Yes. This is it I think because these people won’t vote Reform. They are pissed off about mortgages, child care costs, bills, inflation. The Tories used to mop up the vote of people in their 40s because they were doing well. Now they feel they aren’t, they are angry. They will turn Labour and Lib Dem. Not because they are true believers but because they cannot handle the economy where you have to be rich to cope. Sunak and Truss have lost the Tory Party the middle class and Johnson isn’t there to keep a few old Labour voters on board.

The Tory Party forgot to secure the English middle class. That is how stupid they are.

@NoMoreFalafelForYou what exactly do you fear about having a Labour government?

as anyone who cares to search on this site will see, I'm a Labour Party member. And I'm really serious in my question to you. I don't want to score points or call you out on your views, I'm genuinely interested in what frightens you about a potential Labour government.

Thanks, if you care to respond. I would find it interesting.

I do not think this will happen.

I don't either. I think people feel they can't say they will vote Conservative - doesn't mean they won't

bombastix · 03/06/2024 19:24

It’s an open question- the voter currently intending to go Conservative is old. I think if Nigel Farage whips it up then the Tory vote will be nibbled away there and be less than 20 per cent. That is clearly what Reform are going for, the older Conservative vote. I don’t think Sunak can compete with that in terms of sheer appeal. It will destroy what is left of the Conservative vote.

IClaudine · 03/06/2024 19:29

I think the Labour majority will be less than predicted, but will still be large.

Farage might scrape a win in Clacton, but Reform won't win any other seats.

In an ideal world I'd like the Lib Dems to be the official opposition.

OP posts:
lavenderlou · 03/06/2024 19:34

I live in a very Tory seat. The quiet ones may still vote Tory. The loud ones all appear to be switching to Reform.

bombastix · 03/06/2024 19:34

if the Lib Dem’s become the official opposition then Britain is going to be very different country. It’s been small c conservative. That would mean Britain has a liberal majority.

The Conservatives have enraged a very moderate country. I mean they did this to themselves

Reform will take seats in the red wall as well as from the Tories.

Doubt very much reform will win any seats.

I really hope we have a Lib Dem opposition, it will change the country for the better & mean that all the vitriol they have been spouting have been spouting was for nothing.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/06/2024 19:50

I can't see what they did with the don't knows in that polling. It's been a bloody long day though, so maybe I've missed it!

LizzieSiddal · 03/06/2024 19:55

Swingingvvoter · 03/06/2024 18:54

@LizzieSiddal as you may guess from my name I don't have any tribal allegiance to any party.

But why are we a laughing stock?
Is any country glowing at the moment?

Brexit. They can’t believe we’ve done this damage to ourselves.
Almost every the extreme political party which was calling for their county to leave the EU, has seen what’s happened to us economically and have now taken that policy out of their manifestos.

Do you remember what the Lib Dems did when they formed a coalition?

There is more detail here with seats that are "toss ups". So maybe that takes into account don't knows? If you scroll down, there is an interactive map.

Or maybe the "don't knows" are included in "other"? You are right though, @NoWordForFluffy it is not clear.

I'm sure I've seen it specifically mentioned in polls before, which is why I'm not sure what's gone on with this one.

I read on here the other day that the electorate this time is considered to be quite volatile (and, anecdotally, I've noticed way more people seemingly struggling to choose who to vote for), so I think it would be interesting to see the % of 'don't knows' in each seat. It's those we need to look out for, after all!

Reform would be doing well to get a single seat. I don’t think they’ll even manage that.

Im so pleased the Tory’s will be trashed. They deserve it. They’ve made this country a laughing stock, ruined our economy with Brexit and made life very hard for a lot of people.

Re Brexit, bud, it was not the "Tories" but the voters from all political corners of our nation, fact!! That includes Labour votes as well a Libs

LuluBlakey1 · 03/06/2024 21:07

Swingingvvoter · 03/06/2024 18:56

@Hedgeoffressian re tories I don't think it was truss I think it was ousting the man that actually won that election, Boris! They got rid of the person people voted for!

Then had an endless self indulgent drip of people.

You mean the liar? The man who could not answer a single question honestly or directly? The man who broke the rules he forced the rest if us to live by? Who has still not answered the questions about his weekend in a villa in Italy with dodgy Russians without the security services knowing and without his own security protection officers there. The man who handed billions of public monies to Tory cronies for useless PPE (that ended up in landfill) and ignored small companies with a proven track record of providing the right stuff. The man who led us into the almighty mess that is Brexit- that made us a laughing stock in Europe and that we will be paying for for decades. Who lied to us about the Northern Ireland issue and Brexit- look at the consequences of that! The idiot who sees himself as Churchillian- he is no Churchill- and a statesman when in reality he is a dishonest oaf.
He is an utter disgrace and no better than a con-man.

I could go on but it's pointless. Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and now Sunak- aided (if that is the most appropriate word) by the shenanigans of Gove (single-handedly and disastrously set education back 40 years in England ), Hancock, Zahawi, Bravermann, Patel, those who implemented policies that have caused massive increases in child poverty, those who have worked and voted to undermine and underfund the NHS, the Tory sex offenders and sex pest MPs, the liars, the money-grabbers, the 19 Tory MPs who have lost the Whip just since 2019 from one scandal after another - they have destroyed any trust some electors had in the Conservatives, as well as destroying our economy, industrial growth, education and healthcare, voting repeatedly to pollute our waterways, lowered the standards in the treatment and care of farm animals and lied repeatedly to us about everything.

And they have made more people fall into poverty and created more billionaires than at any time in our history. What a record!

I'm predicting them one seat at best. Clacton suits Farage and that may be the only seat they get, if the sea breeze is blowing in their direction. The mans a joke

Swingingvvoter · 03/06/2024 21:09

@LuluBlakey1. I'm sure you have the novel in you on Boris but the point was, he is who people elected not anyone else.

Well I confess I meant say votes not seats so I do not necessarily disagree with you.
