... an 'emergency' announcement, no less.

Presumably to announce he's finally plucked up courage to put his money were his big mouth is and stand for Parliament, after bottling it!

Well it’s already started. Zero migration as the Reform position. Give that’s the public narrative, it’s not going to take very long until the reason for this position becomes explicit

Having lived through the Thatcher era, and being working class and from Liverpool, I say bollocks to the suggestion of her being popular amongst the working class.

Fair enough but the modern Labour Party is very, very different from the party it was in the 1970's and 1980's. Can you imagine Derek Hatton in Labour today?
If it had been a choice between Thatcher and Statmers Labour then it might not have been such a clear cut choice.

I think it is good he is standing - not because I agree with him but I think politics needs people who have conviction from across the political spectrum. What I like about Nigel Farage is that he is direct and clear, just as was Tony Benn and Ann Widecombe. These politicians are able to express themselves clearly without shouting down others - another politician who I put into this category is Chris Bryant and I also feel that Yvette Cooper is falling into that category more and more but I am not entirely sure on that.

Too many politicians are not prepared to stand up and say what they believe and are seeking to tow the party line at all costs. I think having those with conviction across the spectrum promotes debate which is important.

I couldn't agree with you more. He speaks his mind and refuses to brainwashed by the establishment. We need more of that in politics.

"I’m the black sheep. Got educated, was 18 in ‘97 so thanks to Blair I went to uni for free."

Tony Blair introduced tuition fees. University was 'free' under Thatcher/Major and people actually got grants to live on.

Farage took millions in wages and expenses as an MEP.

He really is the politicians politician.

Brexit "so popular" ? just 17m out of an electorate of 46m, voted for it and now, according to consisting polling, not popular at all.

Maybe her working class supporters are afraid to voice their support in Liverpool?

Given how many people bought their council houses, perhaps support is/was greater than you think?

And even less voted to Remain in the EU, so what's your point?

Following a recession in 2023 Germany is expected to stagnate in 2024 - good job we got out eh

Notonthestairs · 04/06/2024 09:21

Slow growth has been a common trend across advanced economies.

However, the UK has still lagged behind: since 2008, income per head has grown at a third of the speed of the US and half the speed of Germany.

ThisOldThang · 04/06/2024 09:24

Income per head has stagnated because the population has increased by 7-8 million, but the economy hasn't kept pace.

We've become a low tech, low wage economy.

Restrictions on immigration will force businesses to invest in automation, robotics, equipment, etc, which will raise productivity and wages. They'll also need to invest in their staff, rather than rely upon foreign graduates working for minimum wage.

Notaflippinclue · 04/06/2024 09:28

Nobody cares about migrants coming to work integrate and understand the culture a bit - surely it's the young men in boats the crime stats the grooming gangs the no go areas and knife wielding schizophrenics on the streets of Nottingham not to mention the burden on our infrastructure from prisons to schools to the NHS and the rest that normal working people have to worry about. Perhaps the middle classes in the suburbs worry more about VAT on their child's school

refuses to brainwashed by the establishment

Farage was privately educated, worked as an investment banker, has served in paid political office, and kicked off a stink about losing his Coutts bank account. If he isn't member of "the establishment", what is he?

But only 5% of the population benefited.

He is the elite.

He might refuse to be brainwashed, it’s a pity those who lap up his nonsense don’t, tbh.

TBF he kicked of a stink about his Coutts bank account because they treated him appallingly. That's nothing to do with him being 'establishment'.

Neither is him bring privately educated. I know lots of people who were privately educated and they are all ordinary people my own youngest child included.

This is a worry though. When you consider that there was one version of remain (i.e. what we had), but there were many many permutations of what might happen by leaving, it was impossible to day with any certainty what would happen. And yet 17m people still voted without actually doing their own research and getting the facts, hence bleating now that they didn't get the Brexit they voted for.

These same ill informed people have lost faith in the Conservative party and are looking for some other train to get on. Farage understands his audience and leverages it. That's what makes him dangerous. He isn't doing it for anyone's benefit other than his own, but his followers don't see that. It's a bit like Trump. There are those who bought in last time, but there were just as many who voted "not Hillary". Voting "not Conservative" in this instance may end up being a vote for Reform. Heaven help us.

And I know I'm generalising, but if you can find me someone who voted Brexit and thinks they got the Brexit they voted for, I'll eat my hat.

Nigel "No, no, no, let me speak" Farage not shouting others down? Don't make me laugh

The only conviction Nigel has is to his bank account, and to the grift. Just remember Reform is a limited company, not a traditional political party

That’s kind of missing the point. He’d never have had a Coutts account in the first place if he wasn’t establishment.

I'm pretty sure anyone can open a Coutts bank account if they have enough money, 'establishment' or not.

They’d have to be establishment to have enough money to qualify. Unless they’d won the lottery.

That's quite a leap there. Supporting Thatcher was not a prerequisit to buying your council house.

How does that work with campaigning? Does he have pay his 'activists' minimum wage?

BIossomtoes · 04/06/2024 11:07

You need 1 million to open a Coutts bank account which isn't that much relatively speaking so I would imagine there are many non establishment people who could open 1, or like you say a lottery win.
Eg. DH aged relative died and amazed everyone with her close to 3 million estate. She was a teacher and do was her late husband but they were saver and investors. They were very far from 'establishment'.
My point being that being 'establishment' isn't down to money IMO it's down to who you know and how you operate and the money is just a 'lubricant'.
