General election 2024

Run the country? They can't even run a campaign.

I can't get my head around quite just how bad the Conservative campaign has been so far, and we're only a few days in. We had the optics of the drowned-rat announcement, the visit to the Titanic, the planting of Tory councillors in the crowd to ask friendly questions.

Then the disastrous tossing off of the random national service announcement without any sort of serious thought about it leading to cabinet ministers like Steve Baker publicly questioning the strategy.

And now I'm reading that they're trying to dub Starmer "Sleepy Keir" taking a line from Donald Trump about an octogenarian. No one thinks Starmer is old, especially not Tory voters.

How on earth can we have five and a half more weeks of this? I'm not sure I can cope with all the cringing.

I mean, we knew they were shit at running the country, but I dunno, I kind of expected more competence than this. My mistake, clearly.

Totally agree

They know they’ve lost and no longer care tbh. They’ll get their pensions and connections, they’ll be absolutely fine.

PrincessofWells · 27/05/2024 11:58

Can't wait to get rid of them. Unfortunately I think there's so much wrong in this country its going to take a very long time to recover, what ever Labour's plans are.

I think that’s a pretty fair summary. It looks to me as if they’re deliberately setting out to lose. Over 100 seats still with no candidate, no manifesto and half baked stunts that appear to be designed to be unpopular and unrealistic.

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 13:27

OH MY GOD it just doesn't end.

CCHQ have now accidentally emailed all their activists a document complaining about how shit the activists are.

It really is so bad. Makes you wonder who on earth is running this shit show.
I’m loving it though. To quote Napoleon “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake”

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/05/2024 13:33

I suspect all the decent/talented advisors have either jumped ship to Labour or given this election up as a bad job.

Also, Sunak doesn't actually want to win.

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 13:36

Sunak doesn't actually want to win.

The worst thing about this catastrofuck is that I think this is Rishi trying really hard to win. He's just terrible at it.

He lost to Liz Truss.

WellOwlBeDamned · 27/05/2024 13:43

Country? Campaign?

Could any of current political parties, in any of the regions even run a fucking tap before moving on to anything more complex?

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 13:49

I'm not a big fan of Labour and don't start me on their teacher pledge, but at least their campaign looks like someone thought about it in advance. Rishi looks like the entire thing was sprung on him when he was just waking up from a nap, when actually it was him that had complete control over when it was announced.

What’a bizarre is that National Service plan clearly wasn’t part of the plan last week (having read a reply from a member of the defence department to a question saying there were no plans to reinstate NS), but that somehow on Saturday Rishi Sunak hunkered down for serious campaign talks and somehow that was the best they could come up with?!

Whose bright idea actually was it!?

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 17:11

Rishi trying to play football https://x.com/politlcsuk/status/1795098416634077228?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

which just reminds us that he as he went to an elite private school, he probably only played rugby.

The amazing thing is that they’ve done themselves in. I mean don’t tell me that Labour are that amazing. It’s just since 2019 the Conservatives have been completely incompetent at anything. They spent a lot of money during COVID which did go down well since half the country was on holiday in effect, but the rest of their decisions have been badly thought out, hastily delivered, reactive, and communicated in a way that would embarrass any other political party. I think they gave up being a serious group of people the moment they put Johnson in; he was a joke, they knew he was incompetent but they pretended it didn’t matter. Well it does. They have just lowered their own standards so far that they are now actually incompetent.

I’ve met a lot of senior Conservatives in my time who were serious people. This lot are not.

KnittedCardi · 27/05/2024 17:33

I just received my local Liberal Democrat election leaflets. It was absolute shit. Full of nonsense. Really badly written. My vote is looking shaky.

I just wish they would concentrate on what they are going to do, how they are going to do it, what is achievable, rather than just waffling incoherent shit about how bad the others are.

LlynTegid · 27/05/2024 17:41

I just hope it will convince the deluded to stop voting Tory on July 4th. I am not 100% confident it will in enough numbers, or that those wanting someone else will not stay at home.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/05/2024 17:42

What do you expect from a government that repeatedly forgets that Northern Ireland exists and is actually a region of the UK?

Brexit! Forgot about NI.🤦‍♀️
Rwanda! Oops forgot about NI again.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
National Service! Shit, done it again.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

We have never had National Service or conscription here. PM Sunak didn't bother his arse checking it with his Minister for NI.

It's a Think tank called Onward who've been pushing a scheme like this for a while - but their original concept was for it to be voluntary.

They've made it compulsory to distinguish it from the existing Cameron scheme (which Rishi wanted to get rid of) and to appeal to Reform type voters. In doing so they've made it vastly more unpopular,, complicated and expensive and I expect in practice it would prove to be totally unworkable.

And its true.

aiak · 27/05/2024 19:23

Every time we get a change of government, it's because the previous lot have basically pissed everyone off and fucked everything up. There's never a positive reason for change. Ever.

Often the only reason people get in is because the opposition is worse. Bojo got in because Corbyn was just too bad for labour voters to vote for.

I wish that we could dispense with this toxic political situation. Divorce the NHS from politics. Divorce education from politics. All politicians do is come along with their stupid fucking ignoramus policies and fuck things up. One way then the other. One way then the other.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/05/2024 19:32

If the government does a good job they get re-elected. We gave the Tories too many chances and now we're a fucking mess.Sad

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 19:52

Steve Baker has gone on holiday to Greece rather than campaigning to keep his seat because he says Rishi said they were good to book holidays now as the election would be later in the year.

I suspect he thinks that as he has a majority of 4,000 it's not worth missing a holiday for.

Not a good look though!

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/05/2024 20:14

PM Johnson OK'd Raabs holiday during the army's withdrawal from Afghanistan.

They really are incapable, chaotic and fucking stupid.Angry

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 20:27

His own MPs aren't even supporting him. Gove quit, Baker is off on holiday, and Lucy Allan just told people to vote Reform.
