General election 2024

Run the country? They can't even run a campaign.

I can't get my head around quite just how bad the Conservative campaign has been so far, and we're only a few days in. We had the optics of the drowned-rat announcement, the visit to the Titanic, the planting of Tory councillors in the crowd to ask friendly questions.

Then the disastrous tossing off of the random national service announcement without any sort of serious thought about it leading to cabinet ministers like Steve Baker publicly questioning the strategy.

And now I'm reading that they're trying to dub Starmer "Sleepy Keir" taking a line from Donald Trump about an octogenarian. No one thinks Starmer is old, especially not Tory voters.

How on earth can we have five and a half more weeks of this? I'm not sure I can cope with all the cringing.

I mean, we knew they were shit at running the country, but I dunno, I kind of expected more competence than this. My mistake, clearly.

Lucy Allen has just been suspended for supporting the reform candidate for the seat she is vacating….
Makes you wonder whether the party has been infiltrated by hostile actors 😂

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 20:40

Rishi Sunak only just lost out to Liz Truss in that very long leadership battle in 2022 and was pulled off the bench as a last resort once they realized they couldn't do another six weeks of hustings to try and find yet another new leader. That was time they could have spent actually sorting out lots of things , instead it was a round of tv debates and in fighting by the conservatives to only get to where we are now.
One reason I won't be voting for them. It was navel gazing whilst Rome burned and it's even worse now a year and a bit on.
No wonder his team are not behind him and a few of the big names have stepped down.
Even they seem fed up with it.
We have five and a half weeks left as well.

If any level of vetting had occurred previously Lucy Allen would not have been a candidate.

Why not @Thingscanonlygetsunk ? I don't know anything about her.

Why not @Thingscanonlygetsunk ? I don't know anything about her.

She retweeted a far-right doctored video of Keir Starmer.

She also posted an email from a constituent which included a death threat, which she later admitted she added herself.

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 22:21

Oh wow. No great loss then.

I wonder how long Rishi Sunak will stick around for after the election.

Assuming the Tories lose, and he keeps his seat I assume he'll resign as leader. I cannot imagine him wanting to stick around as a backbencher, but I also can't see him triggering a by-election too soon after the election.

Will he just do what Boris and Liz Truss did which was remain as MPs but never show up. Just go off and do their own thing (like Nadine Dorries as well).

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/05/2024 10:16

I think Sunak in particular has just had enough and wants to move onto pastures new. He is not even trying. Ian Hislop did say on Have I got News for You that he thought the PM called a July election so he and his family can move to California in time for his daughter to start school there in September.

The leaving D-Day commemorations early to do an interview lying about Keir Starmer. Bloody hell. Has he got no advisors at all?

There’s gaffs, then there’s this.

Agree. Couldn’t make it up. Imagine if Starmer or Corbyn had done it !

Considering they rely on the pensioner vote (not mine to be clear) that was a big mistake. Not that many left who were fighting but an awful lot of us who grew up with fathers who were suffering from what they went through in WWII or like my husband grew up without a father. Sunak should not be forgiven for that.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/06/2024 09:10

The funny thing is, or ominous rather, is Sunak is STILL claiming it's true about the £2k. He's taken a leaf straight out of Trump. Also starting to use random personal insults about Starmer, rather like Trump did with Clinton. When he first came to power a couple of years ago, I knew he was a Tory, which is never good, but I did not get the impression that he was such a right wing operator.

YouJustDoYou · 07/06/2024 09:11

Labour is a shit fest of horror, the Tory's have been no better. It's all terrible.

What do you think of the Labour party’s campaign so far? Or any of the other parties’ for that matter.

Iwasafool · 07/06/2024 09:23

Keir look very much like a PM as he attended the international event on Omaha beach and was pictured shaking hands with Zelensky. Sunak made a big mistake.

KetchupOnColeslaw · 07/06/2024 09:26

The problems is, labour will get in and people won't realize that it takes years to turn things around so within 6 months people will be claiming labour is no better and will want the tories back!

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 07/06/2024 09:26

It is functionally irrelevant what the Labour campaign is like, currently all they need to do, is do nothing and let Sunak keep messing up.

I am staggered that someone who presumably attended a variety of remembrance events at school is unaware of the significance of D-Day.

Steve Baker has gone on holiday to Greece rather than campaigning to keep his seat because he says Rishi said they were good to book holidays now as the election would be later in the year.

I suspect he thinks that as he has a majority of 4,000 it's not worth missing a holiday for.

Not a good look though!

I think he might be in for quite the surprise then....High Wycombe has changed a lot, demographically, in recent years. Lots of London overspill.

MorrisZapp · 07/06/2024 09:30

Leaving the D Day commemoration early will haunt him. The story will grow and he'll have to make a humiliating statement. It couldn't be worse.

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/06/2024 09:31

He's a fuckwit with no bloody empathy for anyone except himself.

A chancer, seller of snakebite who should be nowhere near government. Anyone who put him there, or kept him there has a lot to answer for.

I can't tell you how angry I am with the whole fucking party fir the harm they have done over the last 14 years.

14 years of austerity caused by a bunch of greedy bankers shorting the system and profiteering from the crash, thanks Sunak. And then, not happy with that they plundered what's left of the countries wealth.

Fuckheads.

To be fair he does deserve that, I think sometimes politicians get slated for quite petty things. This isn't petty.

He doesn’t understand why it is important. Bloody awful. He has just demonstrated conclusively that he doesn’t understand the country, it’s history, it’s struggle, it’s people. Ignorant mentality.

JSMill · 07/06/2024 09:47

Leaving the D Day celebrations shows Sunak's true character. The king is recovering from cancer but was determined to be there because he understood the magnitude of the occasion - the last big memorial with veterans attending. It's a privilege to be able to be there and talk to them. I saw Starmer sitting, chatting to a veteran and looking at photos. He looked like he was genuinely engaged.

How arrogant of you to say my post is irrelevant. Who are you to say so? The election may be a forgone conclusion but then again there may be some surprises. No one has won until July 5th.
