IMO, for millions this may be a deal breaker.

I'm all for equality and that stuff, etc. However, reading Labour stance on women rights Vs Conservatives stance on women's rights.

Will Labour voters who are ladies vote Conservatives just because of their stance on 'women's rights'?

Tories plan to amend Equality Act to protect single-sex spaces

Government considers manifesto pledge to overhaul New Labour’s equality laws in effort to protect women-only spaces and female sports

I appreciate your posts on how we got where we are, @GivePeaceAChance ,in that they are very balanced, but I’m not sure why you seem to think Labour intend to change the law to the effect that “TWAW” - that’s contrary to their stated intentions re protecting single sex spaces.

I’m just not convinced they know what to do in this area.
At an interview some time back, Starmer talked of protecting women and concerned for their safety etc etc. When drilled on what he had said he admitted that by women he meant all women in his mind, including trans women. I felt that was sneaky. ( his recent idea of fast tracking gender identities shows where he is coming from in terms of policy too )

So, I don’t trust his sincerity.
Im looking forward to the head to heads.
I really hope they don’t spend the whole time ‘bitching’ when people really just want to know about what the future could be like under each Party.

Im happy to be proved wrong on policies.
There are Conservative policies I don’t agree with either.
I hate spin, I like facts, as far as they can be researched at this stage.

I do note that Labour intend to make it easier to obtain Gender Recognition Certificates but I don’t think that’s a problem as long as it’s coupled with better clarifying the law around single sex spaces, which they profess they will do.

In fact, the only legislation that the Tories have changed on the issue, since being in government, is when they also made it simpler and cheaper to obtain GRCs in 2021.

Conservatives have updated building regs. For example
All new buildings now must have womens, mens and unisex facilities.
Previously it was just mens and womens as no one ever thought a need for anything else. ( disabled as well but it’s not right trans people should feel they have to use disabled provision )

Plus more single rooms in new hospitals to stop the constant overcrowding need to mix single sex wards. There’s a new one already in Liverpool. It may not work tbh as staffing could be an issue, but we’ll see.

The issue of fast tracking Gender-identity by Labour brings up the problem of people who are married who suddenly, legally, find themselves in same sex marriages that they originally didn’t contract to do. The current C policy allows for an interim certificate giving the other partner time for an annulment or divorce.

Hedgeoffressian · 29/05/2024 00:49

This year was the closest I’ve ever come to voting for Labour but I won’t because of this issue.

I don’t think your description of the changes to building regulations are accurate.

They haven’t passed any regulations yet. As of 3 weeks ago, they intended to propose the new legislation in parliament, with the intent that it would come into force next year. I imagine that had been waylaid by the GE announcement.

And the change is to legally require separate men’s and women’s facilities provided there is sufficient space to do so. Previously there was no requirement and universal toilets had been becoming more popular, which is what the new changes would be intended to combat.

Under the proposed changes, there would be no requirement for unisex toilets.

The changes wouldn’t stop transwomen from using the women’s toilets or transmen from using the men’s, either.

Here’s the Approved doc T draft. We are already using this as are most practices.
I’ve also attached the Govn reasoning behind it. It’s basically to protect womens privacy and safety and stop the increasing number of public buildings converting toilets to gender neutral.

Seriously it's like pissing in the wind here sometimes. The tories do not give one single shit about women

Yes, those correspond with what I posted.

Although it’s a bit weird that the Government say it’s in furtherance of protecting single sex spaces, because they won’t be single sex.

StarDolphins · 29/05/2024 18:49

Any one of us is entitled to vote for whatever reason we want, whether others think it’s stupid or not.

Animal rights & women’s rights are very important to me. LP are better for animal rights, terrible for women’s rights. CP are better (than LP imo) for women’s rights, terrible for animal rights.

So being the stubborn person I am, I doubt I will vote for either.

Lifelikinotdothinki · 30/05/2024 02:18

Wouldn’t it be great to have a political party with women at the helm, focusing on women’s rights, safety, well-being etc. Currently it feels like men are in charge and women aren’t considered.

J K Rowling ought to step into politics and give us a party lead by women for women and I mean real women, not men who think they can be women.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/05/2024 02:21

No, I’m not a single issue voter. I care about everyone, not just women.

Who, incidentally, the tories don’t give a flying fuck about anyway.

I wonder just what kind of idiot believes they do?

Now you’ve called them an idiot, I bet they’ll change their minds eh.

People have learnt nothing from Brexit.

BIossomtoes · 30/05/2024 07:51

They’re not going to change their minds anyway. Fanatics never do. There aren’t enough of them to make any difference, particularly spread across 600 odd constituencies.

MagnetCarHair · 30/05/2024 10:21

I'm not a single issue voter, I care about women's rights, freedom of speech, the reality of truth and facts, the ability for women to be represented by their sex truthfully in parliament and politics generally, the harming of children at the alter of gender identity, safeguarding in our institutions, fairness in sport, the treatment of heretics in political parties, the danger of allowing ideologues to infiltrate the teaching of children out of the sight of their parents, the truthful and fair collection of data. All sorts of things.
