General election 2024

AIBU to think no one agrees with conscription. Does Rushi want to loose the election? This feels like a threat not and election promise?

This has been popping up on my SM overnight. I feel like Rushinis doing his best to throw this election.

Who exactly thinks Conscription is a good idea and how would it work??

Will they get paid?

Will the families still be entitled to child benefit, UC? I have seen the difficult of families coping when benefits stop when children become apprentices.

What if they already volunteer, who is going to look after the volunteers, or force them.

I actually believe what another poster said, he is trying to not get elected.

I'd rather the funding went to schools. Have the army work with schools and provide activities and a pathway to the forces if you want, but forced conscription is a no-no from me. Guess this makes my mind up to vote labour 🤷‍♀️

What strange, strange man sunak is. First the maths, now this. WE WANT DENTISTS!

This!
We want dentists, MH provision, non crumbling school buildings,a functioning NHS …..

But no we’ll blow a few billion on this to go with their other crappy ill thought out schemes that cost the country billions.

As parents we have a choice. We could vote Labour and give our children earlier access to democracy, treating them with respect, trust and empowerment.

Or we could vote for the Conservatives and literally enslave them and have them yelled at by some one-man power trip with a moustache.

I mean, dear fellow parents, isn’t it clear Sunak just told us to vote Labour ?!

cavernclub · 26/05/2024 08:27

It's utterly bonkers. Just like the Rwanda policy, it will be virtually impossible to deliver, without huge use of taxpayer funds).

It would create a generation of teenagers who would then just want rebel against authority- being 'forced' to something against your will at that age is very counterproductive. It's very different times and culture now to what it was after WWII. God help us if the Tories get in (but Keir has probably got a big grin on his face for this one).

If it happens, which it won't, it will be under or unfunded and collapse. It's yet another idea with no thought or substance aimed at the older generation for votes.

They are either out of touch completely or providing knee jerk reactions or culling ideas from the public they asked (I was given a questionnaire and a return envelope for me to give the Tory candidate ideas for his manifesto. Right you are mate, I'll do your job for you).

I'd also add in that without doing national service you won't be entitled to state pension and that as well as 18 year olds that 65 year olds have to do it too

If it's beneficial to youngsters it's surely beneficial to elders too...

Ha! This

PurpleChrayn · 26/05/2024 08:39

I am clearly in the minority but I'm for it.

I have experience of two countries with mandatory service - Singapore and Israel - and the kids it turns out are on the whole mature, responsible and hardworking thanks to their military training.

If you really believe Labour is offering the land of milk and honey then you are as batty as Sunak.

Jessie21 · 26/05/2024 08:42

I think people on MNet are a bit removed from reality on this one.

Of course their DCs are the most perfect teenagers ever and the only things they have to deal with is their children maybe staying out late.

Children are bringing dragged into county lines. Children are joining gangs and stabbing each other. Something needs to change

Didimum · 26/05/2024 08:42

They are going for the Brexiteer pensioner vote. It’s all they have left.

Their policy “big mad idea” floated for young people is to give them a vote.

Tory “big mad idea” is to conscript them.

As a parent I absolutely prefer the first, it empowers my kids. Conscription just gets in the way of their journey to financial independence.

ThereAreNoSloesOnThere · 26/05/2024 08:43

I think he does not want to win. What madness. There have been some utterly cracked ideas coming out of his mouth lately.

Going for the “dead soon” vote - how short termist

Boomer55 · 26/05/2024 08:44

Apparantly it’s to pull Rrform voters back into the Tory fold.🙄

RaininSummer · 26/05/2024 08:44

I think it's a good idea for the NEETS so long as there is no actual danger involved. I see too many young people who are lost at present and going down bad pathways.

AhBiscuits · 26/05/2024 08:44

I don't think national service is that thing. The military doesn't have the people or facilities to spare to babysit a bunch of reluctant 18 year olds for a year.

Spendonsend · 26/05/2024 08:45

I think there is a certain demographic this will appeal to and presumably it's those people the conservatives are trying to attract.

Portfun24 · 26/05/2024 08:45

I said that to my husband it's like they're actively trying to ensure they lose, but why? What do they know?

BeaRF75 · 26/05/2024 08:48

Well, it's obviously not "conscription", so the title is ridiculous.
It's not a bad idea to get all 18 year olds to do some form of volunteering or service, and it will appeal to those traditional Conservative voters who think the party has moved way too far to the left.
But actually, the logistics and funding of this potential scheme are really the off-putting part.

WhitegreeNcandle · 26/05/2024 08:49

ColonelDax · 26/05/2024 08:22

Do I think the policy as proposed has any real chance of being implemented, even if by some miracle the Conservatives staying power? Absolutely not.

But do I think some kind of compulsory national service designed to instill or reinforce a sense of civic responsibility is a good idea in principle? Yes absolutely.

Properly funded (and it would cost a fortune) so that those taking part were properly supervised and kept busy with meaningful work, this could be transformational for those involved and the wider country.

Obviously the military would only be one strand available, prob only for those who chose it, with NHS, Police, Fire, Civil Service, Local Councils etc being other more likely options.

I agree with this. I am involved in a local college on an employment engagement scheme. I’m really concerned about young people these days from what I’m seeing in college. Lots of parents on this thread saying they teach their kids manners, time keeping and a work ethic. Well, that’s not happening in huge stretches of society. Schools need huge investments but I do think this could work very well if implement ed properly. However the chances of that are low.

Or generously funded because the money will go to their mates who will 'organise' (I use the term loosely) the whole thing.

Mumofteenandtween · 26/05/2024 08:50

I think that it was a kind act by Rishi.

As a very gender critical, left-of-centre mother of a teen and a tween I was in a position where I was unhappy with all parties but would probably end up unhappily voting Labour.

But now I will vote for Labour and am ok with it. As the other option - one that would massively impact my children - is just so much worse.
