I mean...really?! Rishi really thinks that a plan to BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE will get the Tories back in? It's so ridiculous! Do you think he has in fact realised that he is shit at his job and it's actually a cunning plan to ensure that they are booted out?

My 17 year old has plenty to do with her paid part time job as well as her A levels. She doesn't need to be an unpaid volunteer care worker as well.

Isn't NS to do with learning how to be a soldier?

TicketyBoo11 · 25/05/2024 23:58

They’re going to force kids to volunteer for 1 weekend a month in the NHS or Police .. or care sector presumably too..

From the BBC website

Under the plans, young people could choose a full-time, 12-month placement in the armed forces or UK cyber defence, learning about logistics, cyber security, procurement or civil response operations.
Their other option would be to volunteer one weekend per month - or 25 days per year - in their community with organisations such as fire, police and the NHS

AmelieTaylor · 26/05/2024 00:02

@BarbaraVineFan

could you not have just posted on one of the dozen threads already in existence on this??

This sounds okay to me…I do have 20/17/15 kids and if they didn’t know what they wanted to do after school some community volunteering wouldn’t send me into a spin…I am ex forces so I’m not anti military

Not necessarily. Nigeria has a thing where graduates are required to serve for a year. They send them to different parts of the country to learn about different ethnic groups, cultures and religions and they work, sometimes in teaching local children etc, for a year.

I’m not saying it’s a good thing, especially where you’re going to areas where there’s conflict (like Boko Haram for instance). I’m just saying it’s not always learning how to be a soldier.

Summertimer · 26/05/2024 00:10

Surely the signal is that he does not want to win the election

So if they're at uni at 18 and need to take 12 weekends a year off for compulsary volunteering, I assume you'd be happy to send them more money for their expenses since they can't do a weekend job.

Doesn’t this along with the sudden announcement of the election suggest that there is something imminent? That we need to be ready to mobilise?

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/05/2024 00:15

The recycling of a 40, 50(?) year old back of a fag packet policy found in an old coat pocket.🙄

The stench of Tory desperation grows ever more pungent.

There are a couple of threads about this that you might find answer your question

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5082641-national-service-if-tories-are-re-elected

is one

I actually like this one better. OP’s post sets the right tone about the issue- the other thread is too neutral.
WTF was exactly my reaction when DH showed me this.

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/05/2024 00:30

YABU - there is an election board.
This must be the 4th thread on NS this evening

No, it just means the tories are trying anything to appeal to the daily mail readers over 50 who think all problems are down to the youth of today.

It wouldn't even come in for a couple of years so not really imminent. Jeez, you make it sound like WW3 is just weeks away. Step away from the social media.

It’s not volunteering if you’re forced to do it.
another harebrained plan with no thought. I am fairly sure none of the services mentioned have time to train young people for such short stints of “volunteering”.
rishi’s booked a long haul holiday for 5 July.

Yes. It heralds a new government in the next 7 weeks.

MegsNaiceJam · 26/05/2024 00:42

This is more proof, if proof were needed, that they don’t want to win an election and want to hand it over to someone else. National Service = My Lovely Horse.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/05/2024 00:42

I'm old and it was a joke in the 1970s that older men would get riled up and shout BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE. It was ridiculous in the 1970s FFS. A joke.

I'd love to know what the average soldier, nurse, firefighter or police officer thinks of having unwilling teenagers to train and engage. WTF are all the teenagers going to do? That doesn't put someone at risk, is a nightmare for privacy, is not foolish.

And what if they refuse?

WhatWillSwingIt · 26/05/2024 00:13

If something was imminent, I suspect they’d probably start with a recruitment campaign for the army and re-calling former soldiers before they began considering handing out guns to a load of stroppy teenagers who don’t want to be there.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 26/05/2024 00:45

What have I missed?!
You can't force people into signing up or doing service FFS
How is that beneficial?!

Other countries can and do quite successfully 🤷‍♀️

Ok, but even if they do ,- as I said how is that beneficial?!
Surely it only would be workable if those signing up wanted to be in the first place.
