To say NATIONAL SERVICE?! WT actual F?!

I mean...really?! Rishi really thinks that a plan to BRING BACK NATIONAL SERVICE will get the Tories back in? It's so ridiculous! Do you think he has in fact realised that he is shit at his job and it's actually a cunning plan to ensure that they are booted out?

What have I missed?!
You can't force people into signing up or doing service FFS
How is that beneficial?!

Of course you can force them. Do you think everyone in Britain wanted to do it when it was introduced? In Sweden, they can put you in prison for a year if you refuse. There are other countries where no military service means no passport or professional job.

And they follow orders and do what’s wanted of them or they get charged in a military court and potentially serve time. Not much of a choice.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 26/05/2024 00:50

Is there a source or link to this please -edited to ask as in a link to where it says this has been bandied as an idea if the Tories get in again?

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/05/2024 00:52

Compare and contrast Sweden's prison system with the UK's. Not a hope in hell they could accommodate this.

Meadowfinch · 26/05/2024 00:57

Plenty of countries have national service and don't have a fit of hysterics.

I have a 15yo who would be in the first age group, and I'm pretty sure he'd enjoy learning about cyber security, one weekend a month. He has a cousin who works at Porton Down so it would just be like works experience. No big deal.

That's one policy that wouldn't worry me at all.

Oh of course. The number of convicted criminals wandering about with suspended sentences is ridiculous. But make an example out of the first few, and people will soon fall into line.

It’s a terrible idea and I’m not for it at all. But it would be relatively easy to make people do what you want. Look at the poll tax riots. And now everyone pays council tax without even thinking about it.

Here you go.

Conservatives plan to bring back mandatory National Service

Every 18-year-old would choose between joining the military or volunteering one weekend a month in the community.

ExasperatedManager · 26/05/2024 01:05

This is so badly thought through.

Who on earth is going to train and supervise all of these young, reluctant volunteers who are only going to give one weekend every month for a year? I can't imagine that the NHS, police or care homes will have much use for them at all.

I think volunteering can be hugely valuable but the volunteers have to want to do it and typically they need to commit to a minimum amount of time to make it worth the effort for whoever they are volunteering with. 25 days is nothing, and would typically be more hassle for the receiving organisation than it would be worth. Just a slightly extended version of work experience placements, which are notoriously difficult to manage.

Then of course there are the other practicalities such part time jobs etc. At 18, my dd has regular work commitments that need to take priority. As it happens, she does volunteer as well, but she is in control of what she does, when she does it and how she can fit it all together with the rest of her schedule. This scheme would appear to take all that away.

Willyoujustbequiet · 26/05/2024 01:07

Its just the tories shifting the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Truly pathetic

And that's fine if he is the type not to want a part time job and your family is rich enough for him not to need to work, but for many kids, working is essential and/or highly desirable. Unfortunately, a lot of employers will inevitably swerve 18 year olds with regular monthly commitments.

My child would enjoy that too but would need to be working weekends for her uni expenses

Thanks 🙂
Their other option would be to volunteer one weekend per month - or 25 days per year - in their community with organisations such as fire, police and the NHS

On reading the article it doesn't sound so bad, with this option BUT I still don't think it is conducive to ", invoking national spirit" if you're trying to force people to.

and there are forces trying to divide our society in this increasingly uncertain world

You read Rishi's words like this and think what the ever loving fuck are you on about?!
Who's they,? Who are the forces behind the scenes you allude to but you can't t come out and say it?;
It's scare mongering culture war bollocks as per.

🤣 they can’t even put people in prison here for committing real crimes, good luck with that!

GentlemanJohnny · 26/05/2024 01:20

Presumably they want to bolster the "Daily Express" vote.

They are letting convicted criminals out here because they can't house them.

There is not a chance in hell someone who refuses this will go to prison.

Coughsweet · 26/05/2024 01:22

Everyone who hasn’t done it previously should do it if it’s voted in, why on earth would it just be for 18 year olds, many of whom would have been too young to have a say. Why on earth should an 18 year old have to do it but a 45 year old who never done it previously be exempt? If the argument is that it helps with a sense of national pride then that strengthens the case for absolutely everyone 18 to 67 to do it. I might actually vote for that but they can fuck off with targeting one particular group, not when there are whole decades worth of people for whI’m the same argument over benefit could apply.

I hope not. I hope they lose the election and it dies a death, like the rest of their awful ideas.

But if they did win (and let’s be honest here, who thought they’d win the last election?) I think it would be very naive to assume that they’d be above making an example out of a few hundred teens, who are nothing in the grand scheme of the prison population, in order to scare all the other teens and their parents into going along with what they want.

Very good point. Make the Tory voters spend their Saturdays cleaning up sick in a hospital. See how long this bullshit lasts.

WinterMorn · 26/05/2024 01:26

Nobody has said anything about prison if there is a refusal. This is pure speculation.

Daily Express, Mail, and sadly my local town's FB page.
Who are mostly all gob but would be the first to kack their pants and go off on one if it happened because their little Kayden Jaden or Schmaden would be impacted.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/05/2024 01:29

I'd also like to know, just for fun, if unpaid nepotism internships exclude you while working in Tescos doesn't. I'm willing to take bets.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 26/05/2024 01:29

I mean, who thought that they’d be willing to jail pensioners for refusing to pay poll tax? But they were.

And it’s not like they’d have to jail many to make the majority fall into line. And if they do, then it would be easier to say no passport, no further education, no formal employment and no access to benefits unless you have a certificate saying you’d completed it.

True, but how do you think they’ll respond if everyone just says ‘no thank you’ to their compulsory military service? Do you think they’ll just say ‘oh, ok then’?

I have no idea! I can’t see it being custody though.
