How do you feel about mandatory National Service for 18 year olds - Sunak says he will introduce it if he wins election.

This is so not what I want for my DC, nor something they want to do. 1 years military service, when they have worked hard towards getting into Uni, and developing a career?

It's like steppng back into the 1950s.

Only saving grace, I can't imagine the forces wanting or being able to deal with thousands of press-ganged kids.

I fear for Sunak's sanity.

Sunak says he will bring back National Service if Tories win general election

The prime minister unveils a plan that would see 18-year-olds given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.

The community service plan sounds remarkably like the "unpaid work" sentencing option, imposed upon criminal conviction.

It's not going to happen but nice to know how the Tories see our children.

It sounds nothing like Court mandated Unpaid Work!

Sunak will bring back National Service, but Rish! doesn't feel the need to commemorate D-Day with other world leaders. Hmm.

Did he not go at all? I am sure I saw him there on SKY news.

He went to the morning event but not the afternoon ceremony with other world leaders. Keir starmer was there talking to zelensky.

Apparently he went back early to do an itv interview to say that he isn't a liar.

Wow. The denial of lying (when it's obvious he was, following the comments of civil servants) could have waited until after 80 years commemoration ceremonies.

Presumably Sunak behaved in this way as he was keen to demonstrate that he has no interest in the UK's shared history.

This is the last celebration where those d day veterans would still be alive

Sunak leaving France early was a huge error of judgement. This could actually be it for him. I am amazed that he wasn’t advised against this - or if he was, he ignored it.

I reckon Rish! was so stung by the truth that he lied that he couldn't think straight and had to rush back to protest his innocent. He does have a particularly skill at doubling down on errors.

Strange behaviour. Complete lies then double down followed by massive error on judgement missing veterans commemoration.

Not fit to lead the country at all.

The 18 year olds who want to do a year in the forces can do so but those who do not want will do work in the services one weekend a month. That's not forcing anyone to become soldiers is it? This has blown up out of all proportion and people have twisted the facts. BTW, I'm not defending any political party here. It just is mad how people think that every 18 year old is going to be conscripted.
