How do you feel about mandatory National Service for 18 year olds - Sunak says he will introduce it if he wins election.

This is so not what I want for my DC, nor something they want to do. 1 years military service, when they have worked hard towards getting into Uni, and developing a career?

It's like steppng back into the 1950s.

Only saving grace, I can't imagine the forces wanting or being able to deal with thousands of press-ganged kids.

I fear for Sunak's sanity.

Sunak says he will bring back National Service if Tories win general election

The prime minister unveils a plan that would see 18-year-olds given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.

What volunteering or military service has he done? In order to be such an advocate? Genuine question, I shall Google.

sleekcat · 25/05/2024 22:41

That will never work. How would it even fit it with going to uni etc? Even for one weekend per month it wouldn't happen.

Meadowtrees · 25/05/2024 22:44

I think some kind of service is a good idea. Why shouldn’t teens do some volunteering? People are always going on about the importance of building resilience, but they never like it when it happens!

Yep many uni teens are working part time to keep their head above water. I need one weekend in 4 off doesn’t work well for most employers

lets see Sunak perform some sort of service before he gets to talk about imposing it on others.

The twat couldn’t even use contactless 😂😂😂

wogjalr · 25/05/2024 22:45

Christ almighty that's trying to appeal to the gammons isn't it? Desperate.

OneFrenchEgg · 25/05/2024 22:45

Can't find any evidence he's volunteered or had military experience

But it's not really mandatory fighting on the front line, is it? I mean, I'm no Tory, but have a proper read of the plan before you choke on your cornflakes:

This.

But I guess that isn't going to draw posters in to froth is it?

It's quite clear (and rather laughable) that some posters haven't even bothered to read the headlines of the article.

I think it's a good idea, but will never be put in place, because of the logistics of implementing it mostly, but also because of the many indignant parents who also won't bother reading all the information.

Shame really.

PermanentTemporary · 25/05/2024 22:46

Where's the money coming from? One of the reasons national service ended was it cost a fortune.

But it's not really mandatory fighting on the front line, is it? I mean, I'm no Tory, but have a proper read of the plan before you choke on your cornflakes:

As for the numbers, under the plans there would only be 30,000 places for the armed forces placement – which would be competitive. So the vast majority of 18-year-olds would end up being rejected from the military option and taking the civic route of community work. (From the Spectator).

Here's another bit of info (from the article you linked to, op)...

The placement would be selective - with tests used to decide who is eligible - and involve working with the armed forces or in cyber defence.

The voluntary option would see young people spending 25 days with organisations such as the police, the fire service, the NHS, or charities that work with older isolated people.

I can imagine a lot of young people would be quite interested in working in cyber defence, tbh.

If this scheme got off the ground I think 25 days a year volunteering at some of the places listed would be great for lots of young people , gives them some work experience and something useful to put on their cv .

Feelingstrange2 · 25/05/2024 22:48

It is just appealing to gammons. It will never be enacted and if it were it would exclude those in training or apprenticeships (so most) and therefore include those that want to go into the forces anyway and those that want to do nothing - and they will still do nothing and refuse to go, just like they refuse to attend compulsory education now. Or, if they did, they'd be a complete PITA.

wogjalr · 25/05/2024 22:48

Why shouldn’t teens do some volunteering?

Do you have any idea the level of work it would put on the public sector to have to enable volunteers? I "supervised" volunteers for years and it was bloody hard work, it cost more than we got out of it, and they were people who wanted to volunteer, and not in a pressurised environment, the public sector needs funding and professionals, not bloody 18 year olds to babysit.

Piggywaspushed · 25/05/2024 22:50

Has anyone ever had a YP who has tried to get work experience in the NHS? It's next to impossible.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 25/05/2024 22:51

They don't actually want to win. do they? They're actively trying to hand their shit-show off to Labour.

Next week: Rishi announces plans to bring back window tax.

Borris · 25/05/2024 22:51

Well I wasn't going to vote for him anyway. But if I was, then this would have cost him my vote

It's not voluntary if they're being forced to do it, and if there's work to be done in those services the government should be creating those jobs and paying people a fair wage for doing it.

notanotherrokabag · 25/05/2024 22:27

Sunak could say that it'll be compulsory for everyone to walk on their hands for two hours a day and ride an elephant for the rest of the time. Who cares? He'll probably lose his seat in 6 weeks.

Huh? Been doing that for years. He clearly hasn't heard the Walk by Hand, Ride by Elephant movement. So behind with the times. He'll be waffling about National Service next.

Prawncow · 25/05/2024 22:54

He can offer anything he wants, it’s not going to stop the Conservatives being hammered.

60 year olds didn’t do national service and had their university education paid for by the government. Are they going to give up a weekend a month for a year to do ‘volunteer’ work?

kindlyensure · 25/05/2024 22:54

I am quite interested to see what Rishi's next scheme is, tbh.
He knows they aren't going to win so he's chucking his big ideas out with no expectation he will have to deliver.
He is trolling us all.
It'll be Monkey Tennis next.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 25/05/2024 22:54

Terrible idea.

The armed services would not benefit from hoards of teenagers who don't want to be there. It will cost them huge amounts to keep them and the only ones who won't be completely useless will be the ones who would have joined up anyway.

The volunteering alternative will be a total mess. The organisations who agree to take on national service volunteers will find that it costs them far more to manage the process than any benefit the teenagers bring.

Fortunately it's not a serious policy. Sunak knows he can't win, so all the policy announcements will be simply crafted to shore up the core dyed-in-the-wool tory voters who would vote for anything with a blue rosette on it. He could announce they will bring back hanging and allow schools to flog pupils and introduce a raft of exciting tax breaks and none of it will matter as he won't have a chance of enacting any of it.

justabigdisco · 25/05/2024 22:57

Shhhh, what’s that? <cups hand to ear> it’s the distant sound of a barrel being scraped…

Mouldyfoodhelp · 25/05/2024 23:08

Hmm... I wonder what another name is for somebody on " forced voluntary work" 🤔

Violetparis · 25/05/2024 23:15

Selective placements, I wonder whose kids would get the best placements, not the working class kids for sure. It won't happen anyway.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 25/05/2024 23:17

daffodilandtulip · 25/05/2024 22:25

I think there is a large sector of older people who often say "bring back national service", as if it's an answer to all anti social behaviours and crimes. I think it could actually be a vote winner.

(against it personally)

Edited

It's a large section of Daily Mail readers who have been fed this bollocks for decades.
It's clasping at straws in a very embarrassing attempt to stop those same fools from voting reform.
