I was at the gym today and there were two teenagers stood behind their parents at the desk, blocking the exit. Instead of moving out of the way they both looked me up and down and moved to make sure I couldn't get out. It's just one example

25 days of washing fire engines will put a stop to this sort of thing, unlike 13 years of compulsory education.

Goldenbear · 25/05/2024 23:58

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:54

@Goldenbear seeing as I worked from age 13 and volunteered from age 15 I'd say I'm a lot different to the little shits going round stabbing each other these days!

Charming language you have there.

Again, your comments are completely baffling and just hyperbolic!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 25/05/2024 23:59

Ooh, here's a conspiracy theory for you.....

What if ..... due to the changing employment landscape, and more and more tech and AI and automation, and the dwindling opportunities for employment and advancement, this is actually a way of making it mandatory to work in the community with minimal pay. Throw in some form of UBI, and with CDBC (which old Rishi is up to his elbows in) plus a smattering of Carbon /social credit leverage, plus the WEF's much ridiculed idea that we should "own nothing and be happy" and voilà, New World Order complete.

We've all rolled our eyes and scoffed at it all (even me, and I admit to having a small tin foil corsage) but I'm beginning to wonder.

I mean, the current government appears not to be able to organise a piss up in a brewery (unless it's lockdown obviously) which is hopeful.... I actually think I'm going to crack open a bottle of wine and laugh and laugh and laugh.....

He’s just panicking… it’s pure desperation.

I’m not saying it is a good idea but other countries manage the logistics of national service, so not sure why it would not be possible in this country

25 days a year volunteering isn’t much different to DofE

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 26/05/2024 00:05

@MistressoftheDarkSide I rather like this conspiracy theory. Rather like communism by the back door.

They could call it "NuCapitalism". I can see the ad campaign now. Charlie Brooker would be an excellent choice of director.

@WaitingfortheTardis why shouldn't young people contribute to their local areas, and also learn to socialise etc as well?

I am 34 and I don't contribute to my local area. I pay council tax for those jobs to be done!

molly1995 · 26/05/2024 00:10

As opposed to labour who throw money at anyone who can't be arsed to get a job? Yep, winning.

There were comments made by the army - General Patrick Saunders speech in January 2024 who said that the UK public must be prepared to take up arms in a war against Putin because todays professional military is too small. Sunak then said there would be no national service.

Russia has become increasingly aggressive and this conscription debate or action is becoming. European wide.

Clearly something has happened.

The army now wants it when all along I had been told that the army is too elitist and professional to want a bunch of kids.

General Patrick Saunders made that speech to make the Govt prick their ears up and start listening about funding the armed forces. He was making it clear to them that they couldn’t continue to treat them as the poor relation anymore, instead they needed investment. And it worked because the Govt said they’d up the funding to 2.5% of GDP.

The army absolutely don’t want to be babysitting a bunch of kids for a year when they’ve got a job to do and I doubt the emergency services or those who work in the NHS do either.

StMarieforme · 25/05/2024 23:54

Please don't think all the boomers want this. We don't.

Only the racist homophobic hate filled people want this kind of thing, and they exist in every demographic

Those same people wanted Brexit as well, and that went through.

pizzaHeart · 26/05/2024 00:11

All these parents of teens in independent schools should really think carefully about how to vote. I would rather pay more in school fees then agree to my son instead of going to Russel group uni going to a field camp for a year practicing marching and running with a rucksack.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/05/2024 00:11

Does anybody else ever feel like standing in the middle of a public place and just shouting "Hasn't anybody noticed the world has gone mad?" to see what happens?

Yes!

Changingmynameyetagain · 26/05/2024 00:15

Sunak is insane if he thinks parents are going to willingly send off their teenagers to be cannon fodder. I know I won’t.
I have 3 teens and there is zero chance of me sending them to the armed forces, conscription or not.

MrsBeachBum · 26/05/2024 00:17

Never.Gonna.Happen. This is just a pathetic bid for right wing elderly votes.

ChimneyPot · 26/05/2024 00:17

Given how badly Sunaks campaign has been run I am surprised he didn’t announce this policy while in Belfast.
It will go down like the Titanic there.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/05/2024 00:18

@Goldenbear Excellent 😁

We should start a movement. Flag and everything. Or maybe just a flag pole. I'm game !!!

Stringagal · 26/05/2024 00:20

Instead of spending £2.5 billion (or whatever it is) on this half arsed plan, why don’t they spend it on a recruitment drive and better pay for our soldiers. I think this is the final nail in the coffin for the Tory party.

Sleepdeprived42long · 26/05/2024 00:25

My 95 year old grandma is Tory through and through but even she doesn’t want her great grandchildren to have to do national service!

This could be the most spectacular own goal for Sunak. I think he’s just handed Labour the win!

crumblingschools · 26/05/2024 00:27

The majority of people would end up doing 25 days volunteering

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 26/05/2024 00:40

crumblingschools · 26/05/2024 00:27

The majority of people would end up doing 25 days volunteering

It wouldn't be voluntary, it would be mandatory.

DaphneduM · 26/05/2024 00:46

This is an absolutely mad idea. It wouldn't work for all the reasons people have previously stated on this thread. Who would this policy actually appeal to? Even if we talk about elderly people, they've got grandchildren they love and protect and invest in their future. No way do I want my darling boys being cannon fodder for Tory wars. I bet anyway in the small print there will be some type of buyout, so as usual the wealthy can find a way to avoid it. It would be a huge, unwieldy and cumbersome scheme to administer anyway - an absolutely expensive nightmare, with no productive purpose. Leave the military to the experts and volunteering to those who are keen to do it. Leave my grandsons alone lol!!!!!!

mumda · 26/05/2024 00:47

It's straight out of the playbook on how to avoid being re-elected.
