Well the last few days have been triggering and scary. What on earth is happening? Stockpile food and we will reintroduce conscription!

cakeorwine · 25/05/2024 23:45

If you live in a small town or village, how do you volunteer 1 weekend a month for the police, fire or NHS when there probably isn't such a service in your village or town and transport is limited?

Do you stay overnight?
Is transport and food paid?

Personally I think teenagers need to do some form of volunteering. They're all so rude these days it would do them god

Personally I find some older people of my generation even ruder

Magnastorm · 25/05/2024 23:46

It's such a laughably idiotic suggestion that it would make me think it was a policy to help the tories lose the election if it not were for the fact that, y'know, it's the tories who are just that fucking stupid to think it's a good idea.

cakeorwine · 25/05/2024 23:47

I wish that someone who does the Apprentice interviews would quiz Sunak on this "business plan" in forensic detail.

Demigold · 25/05/2024 23:48

Didn’t Cameron bring in ‘National citizen service’ (16/17 yrs).
Not sure if that’s still going.
My DF is old enough to have done the old national service, he was furious because he’d been working since he was 14yrs and he had to resign his job( he was already working his way up)

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:48

@justasking111 well maybe if we sow the seeds in the younger generations it'll stop that problem?

I'm not saying send them off to the army.

But volunteering such as street cleaning, tidying up their local areas, beach cleans, in care homes or charity shops. Things that are productive and teach a whole load of other values such as pride in your local community

I don't understand why they think this is a vote winner. Those parents tempted to vote Conservative to avoid VAT on school fees are not going to be lining up to send Tarquin off to the army for a year.

🤣🤣🤣

Many people of all ages are rude these days, why pick on teenagers? If it is so essential maybe we should just force all people to do volunteering. Except that's the problem, it isn't volunteering as there's no choice, it's just unpaid labour.

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:50

@HebburnPokemon I'm 25, not that it matters at all?

I was at the gym today and there were two teenagers stood behind their parents at the desk, blocking the exit. Instead of moving out of the way they both looked me up and down and moved to make sure I couldn't get out. It's just one example

If thats the case then maybe older generations could do it to set an example?

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:51

@WaitingfortheTardis why shouldn't young people contribute to their local areas, and also learn to socialise etc as well?

StMarieforme · 25/05/2024 23:51

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 25/05/2024 22:17

I think National Service is a great idea in theory and would massively benefit today’s teens, but I don’t think they would implement it effectively at all. It would probably end up a huge waste of money.

Why would it massively benefit today's teens?

Those that want to go in the military do. Those that don't, don't.

It's an horrific idea. My perfectly well behaved responsible now men in their 30s would have been utterly traumatised by national service. Why would we punish 18 year olds who've done nothing wrong?

WaitingfortheTardis · 25/05/2024 23:52

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:51

Why shouldn't older people? Why only younger?

PotholesAnonymous · 25/05/2024 23:53

Good luck with the admin on that idea.

Getting three quarters of a million 18 year olds to turn up for voluntary work once a month? Who's gonna do all the paperwork, transport, checking in? Initial safety training, safeguarding training, risk assessments associated with have unqualified/untrained teens around? ?

What if they are already working for the nhs or a care home as a paid job?

What about the ones who need to work at weekends to get through uni?

What about the one's who no-one can get to school currently?

Are patients going to want a load of disgruntled teens wandering round hospitals and nursing homes?

It's pie in the sky.

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:53

@WaitingfortheTardis older people should also be encouraged to volunteer etc, of course.

But if you took all of the 14-18 year olds who spend their weekends trashing their local areas and misbehaving and channel their time into something better, we'd have a much better society in a few short years.

YellowHairband · 25/05/2024 23:53

Noras · 25/05/2024 23:42

There were comments made by the army - General Patrick Saunders speech in January 2024 who said that the UK public must be prepared to take up arms in a war against Putin because todays professional military is too small. Sunak then said there would be no national service.

Russia has become increasingly aggressive and this conscription debate or action is becoming. European wide.

Clearly something has happened.

The army now wants it when all along I had been told that the army is too elitist and professional to want a bunch of kids.

What's happened is a desperate scramble for some votes. If something else has happened and the plan of the people who are literally in charge of the country is to put some annoyed and unmotivated 18 year olds through a few months of training, given by a military without enough people to provide/supervise it, then we really are fucked. Where are the staff going to come from? Presumably the 18 year olds will have to be housed (at the very least the ones who can't reasonably commute), where will that be? In just over a year this is going to be staffed, with physical resources, and a workable plan for what they'll all actually be doing for a year? They'd better hope not many choose the military service, because the number of people turning 18 each year is several times bigger than the total number of full time people in the military. Where will they even put them all day to day??
No one can reasonably think this would be beneficial if we had to fight Russia.

😆you’re 25! So teenagers ‘these days’ are hugely different to teenagers in your day - a whole 5-6 years ago!! You are literally the same generation as many late teenagers!

Jessie21 · 25/05/2024 23:54

@Goldenbear seeing as I worked from age 13 and volunteered from age 15 I'd say I'm a lot different to the little shits going round stabbing each other these days!

StMarieforme · 25/05/2024 23:54

GiantTagliatelle · 25/05/2024 22:36

The conservatives are utterly fucking dead to me now.

What did the 18 year olds do to deserve this?? And if an option is a weekend a month doing voluntary service then the whole fucking adult population should do it.

Including the boomers this is supposed to appeal to. Hell - why not send them to do a year in the armed forces? They’ve had a good life already?

I actually think Rishi is trying as desperately hard as he possibly can to lose this election. What an utter cnt.

Ive name changed for this.

Please don't think all the boomers want this. We don't.

Only the racist homophobic hate filled people want this kind of thing, and they exist in every demographic

Where the hell do you live, I have a 17 year old and no trashing of anything or anywhere as they’re intelligent, civilised people!

I dont see much of this happening at all. Maybe I'd have to read the Daily Mail a bit more to see it. It isn't today's teenagers who've messed up society today, perhaps older people should do it as penance?

Obviously, this too is ridiculous, no one should be forced to do unpaid labour. If society hadn't been so badly destroyed (largely by Tories), perhaps everyone would have more time and energy to commit to helping society and volunteering. Many people can't afford the time and don't have the energy as they are working hard to get by.
