I would guess half their reason for announcing this is to appeal to the reform vote. The other half is to provide an opportunity to say Labour are soft on defense in an increasingly dangerous world when they inevitably tear the policy to shreds.

bluetopazlove · 26/05/2024 08:12

Don't worry about this as long as it sys there is record of your yearly donation to the consevative assocation we will have no use for you teens .

Not Tory MPs for sure. There will no doubt be exemptions for 18-yos doing important roles as interns for big banks.

This with bells on!!!!! Tory youngsters will have plummy internships in medicine or “ procurement” thus furthering their life chances whilst the rest will just have additional pressures.

The fact it's in place in Israel shows it can be done and i can see some merits but I highly suspect our government will make another dog's dinner of implementing it.

Do you know much about how it actually works in practice in Israel, out of interest? There's a whole cohort of Israeli society who've always been exempt, and it's rather a politically controversial issue.

LanternL1ght5 · 26/05/2024 08:14

Wonder which Tory peer is going to get the uniform contract. 🤔

Who are these "older folk " of whom you speak?

How about anyone in support of it should support it with volunteer work?

I'm 63 - you're right - we have a referendum and everybody who votes for it, if it wins and isn't in the youth cohort has automatically put in their names as compulsory application for the more adult "volunteers" - with sanctions if they don't. No representation without taxation.

cakeorwine · 26/05/2024 08:15

I wonder what conversations are going in the houses of Tory MPs this morning with their teenagers And the feedback they are receiving from their children and their children's social media!

Who are the "Tory youngsters" out of interest? Children of people who voted Conservative? Conservative voters themselves? Is that a requirement for these plummy internships? Just need to know for my kids..

And I thought doctors supported Labour? Or not the Conservatives anyway.

In Sweden they do this. But in reality only a small number actually do it and they apply and have to pass assessments.
I think in reality it would be easy enough to get out of if you didn't want to do it.

To my understanding sweden has a selective conscription. So only 5% of age group (men or women) end up serving. In Finland they have general conscriptio and around 75-80% of men end up serving and a very small percentage of women.

I have only read headlines so not sure about Sunaks vision but there seems to be a few ways European countries are doing it.

Alexandra2001 · 26/05/2024 08:00

700,000 18 year olds, 30,000 places and just £2.5 billion to facilitate this? the military cannot handle 30k people who don't want to be there.

So the rest, some 670,000 youngsters all working weekends in a charity shop or annoying NHS staff......

Oh and as 18yo's wont be able to go to University to become nurses engineers etc, we are going to make skills shortages even worse..

Do the Tories have a secret forum whose job is to dream up bat shit policies???

Agree, they’re trying to goad Labour into saying something stupid.

As for Reform, well that’s a party for the idiots. You can tell because Tice himself is standing in Boston & Skegness - of course he’s picked the constituency where he has most chance of winning.

Boston is the 2nd thickest (and coincidentally the most obese) town in the UK. So he’ll do well.

No I don't but read my follow up post. I'm not a supporter of this policy.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/05/2024 08:17

There's definitely something up - Russell Brand hasn't done a video about it yet.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Don't worry darling , we don't mean you , taxes and conscription are for the little people.

Being selfish we have nukes and a bloody big moat around us. As an island nation we are pretty safe.

Will those forcibly conscripted get the option to stay on the island? There’s something fundamentally undemocratic about the idea that the govt (when it chooses to exercise such powers) can take control and send young people to fight for a war they might not choose rather than protecting them. Our youth are just collateral damage : what kind of future will they have? The first duty of the state should be to defend, not sacrifice its young people because it never properly looked after defence.

Lots of keyboard warriors here supporting the notion of National Service. I’m guessing very few of them have ever dug a gun pit in the rain and cold, put up with four hours sleep a day or been screamed at for not "putting in". Anyway - let’s hope your soft kids enjoy the journey.

Oh no, not our kids. Just like it’s not our kids picking fruit, or pulling up vegetables. That’s for the others.

You're very right!

The Tories floating this now is obviously completely irrelevant. But the entitlement some people feel to the labour of the young always interests me. Not just in the context of National Service either.

Utterly brilliant , Ianucci says the whole political landscape is beyond satire now it is satire. Johnson, Truss - WTAF. Free school milk ?

Livelovebehappy · 26/05/2024 08:22

I actually think some form of this set up would be good and beneficial in sorting out the disrespectful young adults we’ve raised, but not at the level put forward by Rishak. It really sounds like self sabotage - the majority of the UK electorate won’t buy into this concept. And he knows it.

thecatsthecats · 26/05/2024 08:22

I think MPs should do National Service before standing for election. A minimum of a year in a minimum wage job in a vulnerable part of society.

It can be done but NS in some countries such as Israel have been a long established and more importantly a continuing process for many years

In the UK HMG privatised/down sized/sold off a lot of HM Forces training establishments and facilities PDQ once the Berlin Wall had come down…

I’m sure some of it could be ramped up again but not quickly and not cheaply.

WoshPank · 26/05/2024 08:22

CroftonWillow · 26/05/2024 08:17

No I don't but read my follow up post. I'm not a supporter of this policy.

I saw that you're not a supporter. It's the fact that you said Israel shows it can be done. That's not an accurate description of how it works in Israel. Haredim are exempt, and that's a very politically and socially divisive issue.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/05/2024 08:23

They also fucked up the messaging - it's 25 days volunteering a year - NOT 1 weekend a month.

25 days a year for how many years though?

cakeorwine · 26/05/2024 08:24

I bet the organisations who are expected to have these "volunteers" weren't consulted.

The last thing charities who support older people want it is to organise a whole load of "volunteers" at a weekend. This plan looks like it's not even been discussed with voluntary organisations.
