General election 2024

Argh! Nobody to vote for!

TheShellBeach · 24/05/2024 14:37

I just don't know who I can vote for this time.

The Greens seem to have forgotten about climate change, the Lib Dems are obsessed with the trans issue, and the SNP don't know what a woman is.

The Labour Party still refuse to be clear about women's rights, and the Tories are just abhorrent, even though they can define what a woman is.

I've voted Labour and SNP in the past, but I can't this time.

And I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than vote Tory. Or Reform.

Anyone got any good ideas?

Just remember that if you spoil your ballot paper, you need to scribble all over it.

There are people who assist with the election on another thread. Many have confirmed that penises etc drawn against a Conservative candidates name (for example) are usually counted as intent to vote for that candidate.

That was me.🤣🤣🤣

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 25/05/2024 21:09

Many of us are in this situation.

I usually vote Labour but am unwilling to atm - they dont know what a woman is.
The greens dont either.
Ive no idea tbh whether the Lib dems know what a woman is?
The Tories do.......... but there are zero other reasons to vote Tory.

Which leaves me, like many others stuck. I will probably spoil my ballot paper tbh.

Lib Dems more extreme than Labour on this issue

I know what you mean
Only the Conservatives are protecting womens rights.

Ultimately it’s a box ticking exercise for me, I’m not going to get emotional or ridiculously sentimental for a party
But I’m not voting to lose womens rights.

George "homosexuality shouldn't be taught as being normal" Galloway's party.

Exactly.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/05/2024 22:01

I know what you mean. Only the Conservatives are protecting womens rights.

They are in their hole! I can think of no government that has destroyed women's rights the way 14 years of this Tory government have.Shock

If you can, please name them @Kandalama.

  • Building regs updated for all new buildings to have single sex spaces for men, women and unisex
  • Single rooms with en-suites in new hospitals ( see one in Liverpool )
  • Interim gender certificates giving married couples time to annul/ divorce before their marriage status changes without their chosing

I am GC.
Starmer doesn’t know what a women is. Apparently they can have penises.
Sunak knows keystage 2 biology and supports and has enacted policy to protect safe spaces for biological women….see updated b.regs, for example.

The conservatives are quite happy and have been pushing back against Stonewall that everyone listened to in the beginning.
They all listened to Stonewall at the time, even the Conservatives, but the Conservatives and only them quickly backtracked and blocked Scottish legislation on this (that Labour are planning on using if they get in 🤯) and are supporting womens safe spaces and encouraging more single sex spaces with their updated regulations.

Starmer, libdems and greens just can’t bring themselves to admit their policies and attitudes are dangerous for women and girls.

If you think Labour’s gender policies support women, and that’s biological women not Starmers women with penises, then you are the only person whose seen an update. Because so far…..nothing new here from Labour.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/05/2024 22:30

I meant can you tell me any government that has destroyed womens rights as much as this Tory government @Kandalama?

I've yet to see one.

It's too early. They will come in a bit.

If you don't want to vote Tory, then vote for whoever will beat them.

And if you don't want to do that, spoil your ballot.

Or, third option, vote for an indie candidate. Unlikely to win in many seats (but not impossible),but at least it's a vote rather than spoiling the ballot (if, like me, you'd prefer not to have to spoil your vote in a GE).

QueenOfHiraeth · 25/05/2024 23:07

The danger in voting AGAINST any candidate is that you end up voting for someone you would not really want in power.
I am a bit concerned that so many people are intent on voting the Tories out we could end up with worse (and, as someone old enough to remember governments from the days of Harold Wilson and Ted Heath so can promise you this country has been deep in the shit before now)
I have had a rubbish Tory MP for a long time (safe seat, not my fault!) but he is standing down and I have heard whispers we may have a good Independent standing so fingers crossed

I like that idea @NoWordForFluffy. A vote to return an Independent's deposit is an investment in democracy.

TidyDancer · 25/05/2024 23:29

I'm really hoping for a good independent candidate because I can't vote for any of the bigger parties. Would never vote Tory (the incumbent is next to useless anyway and I suspect is fully aware you could put a blue rosette on a steaming dog turd and it would win so there's no incentive for her to do anything), the Labour candidate is a pronoun believer (🤢) so he shan't be getting my X. Lib Dem's, Greens and Reform are the only others currently listed here and would rather abstain than vote for any of them. If no independents with decent and sensible views stand then I shall probably spoil my ballot paper.

mellongoose · 26/05/2024 07:58

Basically if you want to vote the tories out, by default you want to vote for a Labour government.

Everything else is just a distraction. Pick a side or opt out.

Well. No, that doesn't apply everywhere, does it?

I'm not sure swathes of people staying at home and opting out would be entirely useful, or democracy in action.

If Labour has failed to make the party attractive to voters, that's a Labour problem to solve. They are not owed people's votes. People shouldn't have to 'hold their nose' to vote for a party they don't agree with and don't really want in government any more than the current lot.

Haveanaiceday · 26/05/2024 09:57

I haven't forgiven the conservatives for the way the acted during covid and I'm not happy about a lot of their policies. I don't trust Labour either though, they aren't the party of the people they make themselves out to be.

Exactly this.

It's not our responsibility to get the Tories out by voting for Labour.

It's Labour's responsibility to get the Tories out by convincing enough of the electorate to vote for them.

The Liberal Democrats seem to have shot themselves in the foot with Davey as their leader. Not only does he believe that women can have a penis, he was also Postal Affairs Minister during the coalition and therefore had a role in the Horizon scandal…..

stuckinapothole · 26/05/2024 13:55

You are voting for an MP not the PM, but in order to get rid of the Tories you need to look at who is best placed to get more votes than a Tory candidate.

In a lot cases this will be a Labour candidate, or in some cases this will be a LibDem candidate. Basically voting for the SNP is in reality a vote for Tories because the only 2 parties likely to unseat a Tory candidate will be a Labour or LibDem candidate and every SNP MP is one less Labour/LibDem MP to form a government that isn't a Tory government

So put aside ideology, and think pragmatically. If you currently have a Tory MP, vote for the party that came second in your constituency last time (as long as not SNP). If you currently have a Labour MP, vote for them. If you currently have a LibDem MP, vote for them.

TheShellBeach · 26/05/2024 14:02

Our MP is SNP.

His opponent is the Tory.

Just like the rest of Scotland, the Labour Party in Argyll is small and not very powerful. The Lib Dems and Greens have more clout.

There is no need to GTTO here. They have no chance anyway.

According to prof John Cutice this morning Labour look set to get 30 seats in Scotland.

Seeing as you asked in your OP, I would say in this situation you vote SNP.

Last time Labour won a GE, they had a lot more than 1 seat in Scotland, and indeed Labour can't really win this GE without Scottish voters going back to them from the SNP. This doesn't help you though. I concede that an SNP MP is better than a Tory MP. btw I have no objection to the SNP, just that in the last 14 years they have taken votes away from Labour, which has strengthened Tory power in Westminster.
