General election 2024

Argh! Nobody to vote for!

TheShellBeach · 24/05/2024 14:37

I just don't know who I can vote for this time.

The Greens seem to have forgotten about climate change, the Lib Dems are obsessed with the trans issue, and the SNP don't know what a woman is.

The Labour Party still refuse to be clear about women's rights, and the Tories are just abhorrent, even though they can define what a woman is.

I've voted Labour and SNP in the past, but I can't this time.

And I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than vote Tory. Or Reform.

Anyone got any good ideas?

Oh I would love a sensible indie candidate.

Not gonna lie, I'm dead chuffed we appear to have one (I stalked his TwiX and no sign of any gender woo shit) this time. We rarely get any indie options here for some reason.

At risk of revealing where I am registered to vote, I was able to vote twice for the fabulous Dr Louise Irvine, the National Health Action Party candidate, who was in most respects like an independent candidate.

I would vote for her again in a heartbeat.

Thanks to the posts about Indie candidates - I’m going to look into these and I hope we have a good candidate announced.

we haven’t had any leaflets or anything so it’s hard to know who we have!

I found out on our local Facebook page when people were discussing the Labour candidate. Then I got vote scolded for saying I wasn't voting Labour. 🙄

Well only if such a candidate actually stands here.
I'm in Argyll and Bute.

Invited SNP last time round. Used to vote Labour.

I’m wondering whether there will be an Alba candidate for my area.

No idea who is standing for SNP - our current chap is standing down.

Our MSP has drunk the kool aid, so I expect it’ll be the same for the Westminster candidate.

My late husband refused to vote last time round. I might spoil my ballot.

Mechanicalengineer · 24/05/2024 22:10

@NoWordForFluffy its very difficult. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t at the moment.

Bit like Brexit!

Nominations close on 7 June, so it might be a while before you get your full candidate list

@TheShellBeach I take it you might be in one the newly named constituencies that so far only has Lab/Tory/LD/SNP candidates.

Whilst I do not share all of your views it does seem a very narrow choice.

I’m also in Scotland but a city. Here so far it seems to be choosing to vote against your most hated party rather than voting for a party that really resounds. Voting Labour to get rid of the SNP, voting SNP or Labour to get rid of the tories in Westminster and so on. At least we will have a few other candidates - greens, independents etc. I’m voting Labour but I do recognise for many people it will be a difficult choice and it is more nuanced in Scotland than in my hometown (england).

I know of some people here that dislike the SNP overall but have a good MP so are voting for their individual MP rather than in party terms but appreciate that doesn’t help you much either. hopefully the manifestos are out soon.

A big issue of the fptp system is this postcode lottery of representation.

I’ve not heard much about any Alba candidates across Scotland?

I wasn’t sure if they’d have some sort of agreement with the SNP to try not split nationalist votes or maybe they just aren’t big in my area anyway.

WearyAuldWumman · 24/05/2024 22:51

I think the SNP are refusing to do deals.

I have 2 young DDs, so the trans issues at school are a big deal to me. I dread how Labour will handle it. I imagine LGBQTIA lessons from the age of 2. They are all awful though, I agree.

Your imagination is out of control. My trans/NB inlaw thinks Labour can't be trusted to protect them from fearmongering like this. And the 32 genders DM reader drivel

BlueJamSandwich · 25/05/2024 09:13

KnittedCardi · 24/05/2024 14:57

This Conservative government has poured support money into the economy from COVID through to COL. Billions into Furlough, decreased rates for businesses, increases in benefit payments, £400 to every household, extra tranche payments of hundreds of pounds to UC and other claimants. These were all very Liberal Left policies. It's one of the reasons we are in such a mess.

So, yes, in some ways, a very socially conscious left wing government!

That's not why we are in a mess is it? It's more likely the £100 billion a year hit to our GDP from Brexit, the high costs from privatised energy, water, railways, the knock-on costs from underfunding public services, Liz Truss and her kamikaze economics & decades of moving public assets and funds into private hands. All pretty right wing.

Sadly it's not fear mongering - I am a teacher btw - and stop with the nonsense DM crap. It's one of the few papers that has consistently covered this shit show whilst left leaning media - the Guardian for example - have been pillars of misogyny throughout.

FondOfOwls · 25/05/2024 09:54

@SofaThrow I am 'lucky' that my DD is a gender-conforming, neurotypical child, but we just got a PSHE email from the school with a 'gender diversity' module for 6 year olds.

Glad you are happy with the current state of affairs, PrincessAnne.
I'd much rather they concentrated on times tables.

I am sorry to hear this. Request to see exactly what is going to be taught and also, importantly, who is delivering it or where they got their resources from. Some of these organisations are just TRAs pushing a harmful agenda. Don't necessarily assume that all of the staff are on board as most of us can see that it's nonsense and some of us are fighting from within and making headway. Parental scrutiny, queries and complaints do go a long way. Sense has to return to our classrooms. 😡

TheShellBeach · 25/05/2024 14:13

And yes to children concentrating on their times tables at the age of six.

I'm a little confused. It seemed at first that you had no part you felt aligned to. But it seems that you really just feel you have to vote tactically? I get it. With my heart I'd vote Labour but in my constituency it's Lib Dem versus SNP. In previous years I've voted with my heart, but this year everything seems so awful it's a head year, and for me that's anyone but Tory or SNP. Independent candidates might be good, but very very few will be FPTP unless you're maybe Jeremy Corbyn.

SpindleyDindley · 25/05/2024 15:33

Neither do I.

I was swaying towards Labour this time but not being able to define a woman has been holding me back. Wanting to Give the vote to 16years olds was the final nail in the coffin.

Perhaps a doodle on the balot instead.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 25/05/2024 21:09

Many of us are in this situation.

I usually vote Labour but am unwilling to atm - they dont know what a woman is.
The greens dont either.
Ive no idea tbh whether the Lib dems know what a woman is?
The Tories do.......... but there are zero other reasons to vote Tory.

Which leaves me, like many others stuck. I will probably spoil my ballot paper tbh.

Lib Dems definitely don't!

Women ‘quite clearly’ can have a penis, says Lib Dem leader Ed Davey

Sir Ed Davey has said that women “quite clearly” can have a penis. The leader of the Liberal Democrats made the comment during an interview with LBC, when he was asked by a caller whether he could name “what a woman” is. “There’s a small number of peop...

So depressing that in 2024, we have a political scene that’s so dysfunctional that groupthink holds sway across the political parties (not just within them) and great swathes of the population have been effectively disenfranchised because nobody bothers to represent their interests.

Most obviously, 51% of the population being thrown under the bus by most of the parties, is completely unacceptable.

GivePeaceAChance · 25/05/2024 21:34

Wait for policies and proof that they will be worth it, financially or otherwise.
keep a list
what’s important to you

The head to heads might give you a better feeling for the policies and differences and whether Party’s have defined policies.

Theres 6 weeks to go of campaigning so hopefully they won’t all be spewing lies, hate and hot air.

Just remember that if you spoil your ballot paper, you need to scribble all over it.

There are people who assist with the election on another thread. Many have confirmed that penises etc drawn against a Conservative candidates name (for example) are usually counted as intent to vote for that candidate.
