Do you use ccleaner, removes any unwanted crap?ccleaner

thisisyesterday · 17/04/2010 20:43

depends why it is going slow. cleaner things often don't actually remove much stuff.

the memory it uses to run is not the same memory it uses to store stuff, so removing everything won't necessarily help.

thisisyesterday · 17/04/2010 20:43

are you using windows?

Katymac · 17/04/2010 20:43

I'll try that

TBH I am worried defrag doesn't work - that does not bode well

OP posts:
Katymac · 17/04/2010 20:44

Yep XP

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 17/04/2010 20:47

what does it say when you try and defrag?

Katymac · 17/04/2010 20:48

Nothing it just hangs at 10%

We are having trouble opening the laptop as well

OP posts:

hmm it could just be a massive thing it's busy defragging

or it might not have enough space free to be able to defrag.

are you sure you've got rid of everything you possibly can? can you copy stuff onto an external hard drive or onto cd? (pics etc?)

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 20:57

how much of the memory is in use(full). How much
RAM memory does it have?

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 20:58

and is it your internet connection thats slow?

Katymac · 17/04/2010 21:00

No everything is slow

I am taking all files off it now

I'll check disk space in a minute

OP posts:

How much memory is in use? If you hold down Ctrl and Shift then press Escape you should get the Task Manager pop up. Go to the Performance tab and have a look at what it says under Physical Memory and compare that to what the Memory chart is saying.

Katymac · 17/04/2010 21:14

Physical memory

Total 915556
Avail 419884
System Cache 358820

So alot of c drive is full then, did it suddenly become slow? or has it been gradually slowing down over a long time?

Katymac · 17/04/2010 21:29

Gradually slowing down

Gradually becoming more difficult to open

OP posts:
ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 21:41

adding more RAM memory speeds it up and is usually easy to do. But C drive is too full. You defo think you need to sort out the defragging.
also delete temp files in internet explorer browser.
PC Advisor website forum is great for advice for this kind of stuff too. Really helped me- someone on there helped me work out why My pc c drive hardly had any space left and turned out i had once unknowingly created a hidden partition on my c drive so most of it was unuseable and invisible! Was easily fixed with their advice and its miles faster now!

Katymac · 17/04/2010 21:43

I don't use IE

Hmm Partitions - don't know much about that

I'll have a look at PC advisor

I am running something called 'Registry Reviver' don't know if it will help

OP posts:
ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 22:40

might help. have just run progam on my pc called disk md, it says for decent performance no drive should be more than 50% full. i reckon thats why it is hanging when trying to defrag.you could definitly do with moving excess stuff to an external hard drive. whats taking up most space- usually its movies/photos/music files.

Katymac · 17/04/2010 22:43

None of those on at all

It's odd

OP posts:
ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 22:45

definately odd, what the hell is taking up all that space then if none of them!!?
i have some free program on pc that shows what your memory is used up by-hang on

ellasmum1 · 17/04/2010 22:46
